In 1930, artist Grant Wood painted American Gothic, showing an Iowa farmer and his wife outside their farmhouse. The farmer was actually Dr. Byron McKeeby, Wood’s dentist! HOSTING ITS 59th annual Extravaganza of Barbershop Harmony, the Gold Coast Chorus will present two shows on Saturday, May 12, at the North Bend Presbyterian Church near Pony Village, with a matinee at 2 p.m. and an evening show at 7 p.m. Under the direction of Dave Aakre, the Gold Coast Chorus includes members from Florence, Mapleton, North Bend, Coos Bay, Coquille, Bandon and Langlois. The chorus will introduce the show with four-part harmony, from the lullaby “Hushabye Mountain,”from “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” to favorites like the Beatles “When I’m 64” and the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have To Do Is Dream.”
