Events at the South Slough Thursday, Feb. 2: Estuary Facts and Front Line Customer Service-Visitors Service Training Option module from 9 a.m. to noon. Potential and current volunteers need to call 541-888-5558 to register for this free training. Saturday, Feb. 4: Explore the South Slough trails in search of feathered friends from 8 to 10 a.m. Patient birders of any age are welcome to join. Binoculars, spotting scopes, field guides and an interpreter will be provided. Call to register ($1/birder). Saturday, Feb. 4: “Feeding Birds in Winter” workshop from 10 a.m. to noon. Build your own bird feeder, discover which feeds work best for which birds and identify common backyard birds of Coos County. (15 participant maximum, $5/person.) Call to register. Saturday, Feb. 11: Build a Birdhouse workshop, 9 a.m. to noon. Tools and supplies provided. Work on your own or bring a partner. (15 participant maximum, $10 per birdhouse). Call to register. Activity fees and donations cover materials and are used by the Friends of South Slough Reserve, Inc., in support of the reserve. South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve’s mission is to improve the understanding and stewardship of Pacific North-west estuaries and coastal watersheds. LOOKING FOR a perfect night on the town for your Valentine? The Bandon Booster Club is hosting a fundraiser, “Sugar and Ice” from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Harbortown Events Center, 325 Second St., S.E., in Old Town Bandon. The evening will include appetizers, drinks, dancing and the opportunity to bid on delectable desserts created by some of the area’s finest bakers, according to a press release. A no-host bar will be available. Tickets are $15 each or $110 for a table of eight. Tickets may be purchased Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Juul Insurance in Bandon (uptown on U.S. Highway 101 between Edward Jones Investments and Bee Happy Scrapbooking) or call 541-404-4126.
