Blackwood Legacy Quartet in Concert

Library foundation holds adult spelling bee at The Mill COOS BAY — We’ve found some really good spellers.

Come watch them compete and help the Coos Bay Public Library Foundation raise much needed funds. The event will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at The Mill Casino Salmon Room.

Join master of ceremonies, Tim Novotny, as he lobs harder and harder words at the teams. You can support your favorite team by purchasing a spectator ticket for $25 which includes a dessert buffet, coffee and a no host bar. Raffle tickets will be available for various “bee” themed gifts and a 50/50 raffle.

This year’s generous Spelling Bee sponsors are: Coos Bay Chapel, Art Connection, and Steve and Jennifer Groth.

The Blackwood Legacy Quartet has an all-star line-up. Lead singer Daniel Childs is the great grandson to Blackwood Brothers founding father, Roy Blackwood. Spokane native Luke Yates sings baritone with the group, and is also an award-winning pianist. Tenor singer Paul Secord, formerly a featured singer for Disney World, is one of the most talented in Gospel Music today. Group owner and bass singer, Rick Price, was originally a protégé of the late Cecil Blackwood.

He began his 35-year

career singing with the Blackwood Brothers in 1977, and was eventually inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame with the legendary group.

Performing since 2001, The Blackwood Legacy Quartet was signed to Mansion Records in 2010, and continues the grand tradition of gospel music, performing nearly 250 dates annually nationwide.

Logos Players to hold dinner theater COOS BAY — The Logos Players are ready to put on their 11th annual dinner theater production.

This year “Two by Two,” a comedic Broadway musical, will be presented Fr i d a y, March 21; and Saturday, March 22.

“Two by Two” is a retelling of the Old Testaments’ Noah’s Ark promises to be entertaining. Phil Kupka will play Noah and Janice Bowman will portray his wife, the youngest son will be played by Curtis Buell and the women in the story include Doris Smith, Diane Kupka and Jen Dahle, all under the direction of Becky Bell-Greenstreet.

Between dinner show acts there will be a special dessert auction to support The Maslow Project. At least half the proceeds will be donated to the community resource for homeless and needy youth and their families.

Dinners will begin at 5:45 p.m. and showtimes will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 21, 22 and Friday and Saturday, March 28, 29. Admission will be $12 for adults and $8 for those 12 and younger.

Sunday performances will begin at 2 p.m. and are set for Sunday, March 23, and Sunday, March 30.

Cookies and refreshments will be served during intermission. Admission will be $10 for adults and $6 for those 12 and younger.

COOS BAY — The Coos Art Museum opened 2014 Biennial Student Art Exhibit and Vision 2014 H igh School Art Competition featuring artwork created by students, preschool through grade 12, from Coos, Curry and western Douglas counties. The exhibition is being held in the Maggie Karl and Perkins Galleries.

The last exhibit was an extraordinary experience with 1,051 works on display representing 22 regional schools. Both the numbers and the quality of works were impressive. This exhibition is sponsored in part by grants from the Coquille Tribal Community Fund, Coos County Cultural Coalition and The Autzen Foundation.

Come and be prepared to be amazed by the works produced by our young local artists.

Also, through April 12 the museum will be exhibiting Vision 2014, its annual high school art competition underwritten by Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation. Coastal high schools as well as high schools in Douglas, Josephine and Jackson counties have submitted entries.

The exhibitions are open to the public and admission is free of charge.

Eat soup for swimmers in Coquille COQUILLE — The Coquille Kiwanis club will host a soup fundraiser. Four varieties of soup — clam chowder, tomato basil, chicken rice or minestrone soup with bread and dessert will be offered from 4-7 p.m. Saturday, March 22, in the small auditorium of the Coquille Community Building, 115 N. Birch St. Soup will cost $15 for an immediate family, $5 for adults, $3 for children 9-12 and ages 8 and younger eat free. History at the Hughes House PORT ORFORD — Cape Blanco Heritage Society plans to put on four short plays, several times a day, on two Wednesdays during the months of June, July and August, celebrating the sixth year of “Living History at Hughes House.”

The Hughes House is a restored 1890s Victorian home located near Cape Blanco, north of Port Orford, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It originally was part of Hughes Ranch, which began in the 1860s as a dairy.

Actors, understudies and other volunteers are needed for plays that will be about five minutes long.

In particular, three women in mid-30s and late-60s and two men, mid-40s or older are needed. Actors will dress in period costumes and discuss events from the Hughes family personal lives.

Those interested are asked to attend a meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at the Port Orford Public Library. For more information, call Jane Wight at 541-655-0072.

Learn to turkey hunt at upcoming workshops SALEM — ODFW and sportsman groups are hosting three upcoming turkey hunting workshops for youth and families, March 23 in Salem, March 30 in Springfield, and April 5 in Tygh Valley.

The workshops will cover turkey behavior, scouting, calling and other hunting strategies. Participants will also practice shooting, learn how to pattern a shotgun and determine an effective range, and how to hold their gun as a turkey approaches. ODFW and partners provide all the firearms and ammunition needed at the events.

Spring turkey hunting season is open statewide from April 15-May 31. It’s a great sport for beginning hunters to try. “All you need to turkey hunt is a call, a shotgun and camouflage clothing,” said Mark Newell, ODFW outdoor skills coordinator. “Come to our workshop and we’ll teach you everything you need to know to get started.”

Registration is required at all three workshops and spots are limited. To register, visit ODFW’s Outdoor License Sales page. You will need to enter your Hunter/Angler ID, which is printed on all licenses and tags. ODFW to issue four coastwide bay clam dive permits SALEM — The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will award four coastwide bay clam dive permits April 11, at ODFW headquarters in Salem.

“The commercial bay clam dive fishery in Oregon is limited to 15 permits — 10 coastwide permits and five South Coast permits,” said DeAnna Erickson, license service manager for ODFW. “If the number of permits falls below 15 we hold a lottery to bring the number back up to 15. Currently there are four coastwide permits available.”

Bay clams are harvested by licensed inter-tidal commercial harvesters and also by permitted sub-tidal divers. Harvest focuses on cockles and gapers, though butter, littlenecks and softshells are also landed.

“Historical landings patterns and species targeted vary depending on market demand, environmental conditions and population abundances,” said Mitch Vance, shellfish project leader for ODFW’s Marine Resources

“For instance, the season for gapers is closed from January to June when they are spawning,” Vance said.

Only one application per vessel or individual will be accepted. Applications must be received in the Salem office or postmarked no later than March 31. Successful applicants for individual permits will be required to purchase a personal commercial license within 30 days.

Individual commercial licenses cost $82 for residents and $132 for nonresidents.

To renew a permit for the next year, the holder must meet minimum landing requirements of five landings of at least 100 pounds each or an annual total of 2,500 pounds with dive gear. If there are no landings, the permit reverts to the state.

Commission suspends sea urchin permit lottery for two years SALEM — The Fish and Wildlife Commission met March 7 in Salem and completed the following business: ■ Suspended the sea urchin permit lottery for two years due to stock and fishery conditions.

■ Amended the Wildlife Integrity Rules to put several species on the Noncontrolled or Prohibited list based on the level of risk they present to native wildlife (through disease, habitat competition, or hybridizing).

■ Appointed two new representatives to the statewide Access and Habitat Board: Alan Christensen of Portland as a Hunter Representative and Craig Ely of La Grande as a Landowner Representative.

■ Approved Access and Habitat funding for the New River Aleutian Goose Project along the southern coast, which will provide fertilizer to private landowners experiencing goose damage in return for continued hunting access.

■ Amended falconry rules that govern the take of peregrine falcons for use in falconry, and added a new species to the list of species allowed for use by falconers.

Finally, the Commission was briefed on the 2013 Oregon Wolf Conservation and Management Annual Report. As of the end of last year, there are 64 known wolves and eight wolf packs in Oregon, including four breeding pairs and 17 pups.

The Commission is the policy-making body for fish and wildlife issues in the state. Its next meeting is Friday, April 25, in North Bend.

Ten hunts will be raffled on Monday, March 31.

Winners will receive one day of turkey hunting on the C2 Ranch, accompanied by a guide who will help locate wild turkeys. A parent or other family member may also accompany the youth on the hunt.

Spring turkey season runs April 15-May 31 statewide, and youth hunters get their own two-day season April 12-13. Winners will need to contact C2 Ranch to arrange a hunt day sometime during the season.

“The ranch has a lot of oak savannah and brushy areas, which makes for good wild turkey habitat,” says ODFW wildlife biologist Vince Oredson.

Raffle applications are available at the ODFW Central Point office, 1495 East Gregory Road or online.

Applications must be received at the Central Point ODFW office by 5 p.m. Friday, March 28, and may be submitted by mail, in person or email. There is no cost to enter the raffle. Winners will be notified Monday, March 31.

Youth without hunter education certification may apply and hunt under the Mentored Youth Hunter program , but only during the regular spring turkey season (April 15-May 31), not the two-day youth season.

Oregon Fish And Wildlife - Regulation Changes Deschutes River Open for adipose fin-clipped Chinook from April 15 through July 31 from the mouth of the Interstate 84 bridge upstream to Sherars Falls.

■ The catch limit is two adult adipose fin-clipped salmon per day, and five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon per day.

■ All non-adipose fin-clipped Chinook salmon must be released unharmed.

■ It is unlawful to continue to fish from Sherars Falls downstream to the upper railroad trestle after taking a daily bag limit of two adult Chinook salmon.

Hood River ■ Open for adipose fin-clipped Chinook from April 15 through June 30 from the mouth to mainstem confluence with the East Fork, and the West Fork from the confluence with the mainstem upstream to the angling deadline 200 feet downstream of Punchbowl Falls.

■ The catch limit is two adult adipose fin-clipped salmon per day, and five adipose fin-clipped jack salmon ■

FISHING Tenmile Basin: steelhead More than 200 steelhead have been recycled from the Eel Lake Fish Trap back downstream into Tenmile Creek at Spinreel Park to give anglers another chance to catch these fish. A few bright, fresh fish continue to enter the Eel Lake Fish trap each week. There is bank fishing access at Spinreel Park, at the mouth of Eel Creek, and also along Eel Creek. Fishing in Eel Creek opened on Jan. 1. In the Tenmile Basin, from Dec. 1 through April 30, anglers may keep one additional adipose fin-clipped steelhead per day for a total aggregate of three adult fish harvested daily.

Umpqua River: winter steelhead The South Umpqua is open for winter steelhead fishing. The number of steelhead has increased in the South and should peak in March through early April. Most hatchery steelhead return to the South Umpqua, so anglers interested in harvesting a hatchery fish will be most successful in the South. The rain has improved conditions on the South. Both bank and boat anglers have been doing well and a good number of hatchery fish have been caught recently.

Winchester Bay: winter steelhead Steelhead will be migrating up the Umpqua for the next several months. Most steelhead fishing in the lower, main and north Umpqua is catch-and-release since most of the fish are wild. Anglers wishing to harvest a hatchery fish should focus on the South Umpqua.

ODFW will host Family Fishing Event Saturday at Devils Lake NEWPORT — Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a Family Fishing Event Saturday, March 15, at Devils Lake in Lincoln City.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Regatta Park. ODFW will stock the lake with 6,500 rainbow trout, including 2,000 fish that will be released in a large net pen reserved for youths.

ODFW staff and volunteers will be present to hand out equipment, and be available to teach youngsters how to bait, cast, and “reel in” their catch.

Adults can get tips on basic rigging, fish identification and casting.

This is the first of dozens of family fishing events that will be held throughout the state this year. These events are intended to help families to learn how to fish together and discover just how much fun it can be.

“This is shaping up to be a great event,” said Christine Clapp, fish biologist in Newport. “We’ve got a lot of fish going into the lake, and we’re hoping for a lot of excited kids to reel them in.”

Licenses are required for anyone over the age of 13, and are not available at the events. If you need a fishing license you may purchase one online or at one of ODFW’s license outlets. Juvenile licenses cost $9 each. To purchase a license on-line, visit ODFW’s website.

Loon Lake: rainbow trout, bass, bluegill The lake can also provide good fishing for crappie, bluegill and bass. Fishing is slow and both the BLM and Resort’s boat ramps are closed. The lake will be stocked with more than 4,000 trout in the next couple of weeks.

A few may be just shy of legal size for harvest.

Coos County lakes/ponds: rainbow trout The trout stocking truck had a problem with its aerators last week so no trout were stocked in any of the Coos County lakes. The aerators are now all fixed so trout will be stocked in Bradley Lake, Saunders Lake, Johnson Mill Pond, Powers Pond and Empire Lake this week.

Coos River Basin: Dungeness crab, bay clams, steelhead, rockfish Steelhead anglers have been catching fish in the South Fork Coos River and also in the East and West Fork Millicoma rivers. The rains forecasted for this week will most likely bring all the river levels up slightly. The West Fork Millicoma River will be the first river to clear.

Anglers have had success catching steelhead on sand shrimp when the rivers are running low and clear.

In the Coos Basin, from Dec. 1 through April 30, anglers may keep one additional adipose fin-clipped steelhead per day for a total aggregate of three adult fish harvested daily. Anglers wanting to fish the South Fork Coos River will need to pick up an access permit from the Weyerhaeuser Dellwood office.

In a cooperative effort including ODFW and OSU researchers, hundreds of red rock crabs have been tagged with a small blue “floy tag” in Charleston to gain an understanding of their growth, age, movement, population size, and fishery. Red rock crabs are native to Oregon and are found in only a few Oregon estuaries. If you catch a tagged red rock crab please contact the ODFW Charleston office at 541-888-5515.

Before any shellfish harvest trip, make sure to check the Oregon Department of Agriculture website for any updates.

Coquille River Basin: steelhead Fishing was very good on the North Fork and South Fork Coquille rivers last week. River levels will most likely go up slightly with the forecasted rain this week but there should still be plenty of steelhead to catch once the rivers drop back into shape. In the Coquille Basin, from Dec. 1 through April 30, anglers may keep one additional adipose fin-clipped steelhead per day for a total aggregate of three adult fish harvested daily.

HUNTING Cougar hunting is open. Hunters can expect an average year. Cougars are abundant throughout with indicators pointing to stable or increasing numbers. Hunting

cougar is a challenge because these animals are very secretive, but harvest success is greatest adjacent to private land with high deer populations using a predator call.

Coyote populations are good in Coos County and they will often respond to calls. Calling coyotes in the coast range is challenging due to brush. Many landowners with sheep are complaining about losses of sheep to coyote predation. Hunters interested in hunting coyotes may find success in asking for permission to hunt private land where landowners are losing sheep.

REMINDER: Wolves and coyotes can look alike Most wolves in the state today are in northeast Oregon but a few have dispersed further west and south. Wolves are protected by state and/or federal law and it is unlawful to shoot them. Coyote hunters need to take extra care to identify their target as wolves can look like coyotes, especially wolf pups in the mid-summer and fall. ODFW appreciates hunters’ assistance to establish wolves’ presence in Oregon; please report any wolf sightings or wolf sign to ODFW using the online reporting system.

TRAPPING Mink and Muskrat — Currently open. Healthy populations throughout Western Oregon. Hurry, the last day of the season for mink and muskrat is March 31.

YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE Marine Mammals Seal and sea lion abundance in coastal waters around Coos County is high at this time of year, especially south of Coos Bay. At Simpson Reef, a heavily used haul out exists. From the look out, viewers can see California sea lions, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and elephant seals.

Do not approach seals and sea lions you may find on Oregon beaches. If you think an animal you find is, in fact, in trouble, contact your local ODFW office to report the animal or contact the Marine Mammal Stranding Network an 800-452-7888.

Waterfowl Rain has caused flooding to occur in inland valleys like the Coquille Valley. The result of this is that many waterfowl have left the coastal bays and moved into these valleys. Waterfowl numbers will continue to be high as long as agricultural lands in these areas are flooded. A birding tour on North Bank Lane and state Highway 42 will provide many opportunities to view waterfowl as they feed in these agricultural fields.

Sea ducks are scoters eiders, harlequin ducks and other ducks that spend most of their lives in the ocean or estuaries or near these environments. Surf scoters are the most common sea duck in coos County. Presently there are large numbers of them in local bays. These ducks are strong swimmers and fliers. They often are found in flocks numbering in the hundreds. The Coos Bay North Spit is a good place to see these birds gathered in flocks that at times are vast.

Wintering Shorebirds The mud flats around Coos Bay, the lower Coquille River, Winchester Bay and others provide winter feeding areas for shorebirds of a variety of species. While most shorebirds winter much farther south than the Oregon coast, some do winter here. Those interested in seeing these birds will find an opportunity along Cape Arago Highway, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Area and New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern.
