Meet and greet South Coast artists in Bandon BANDON — Meet & Greet the Artist events will be featured every weekend throughout the summer at Second Street Gallery in Bandon. They are free and the public is invited to see artists talking about and demonstrating their art.

This week’s Meet & Greet features artist S.L. Donaldson working on paintings from 11 a.m. to closing Saturday, July 27, o n l y. D o n a l d s o n i s known for her vibrant c rea t u re - t h e m e d a r t wo r k a n d w h i m s i c a l paintings of gulls in hats and costumes.

S.L. Donaldson was born in Germany in 1973.

The vibrant cultural history of Europe was a catalyst

to her artistic endeavors.

Her talent was quickly recognized, leading to an opportunity to study under Italian artist Ricardo Blaszczyk. It was through his mentorship that she learned strength of line and color.

In 2009, she chose to purse art as a full-fledged career. Her artistic efforts were quickly rewarded by inclusion in numerous juried shows and receipt of awards and commission requests.

Donaldson currently resides on the Southern Oregon Coast where she is working on additional acrylic paintings that expand upon her interest in animals and gulls, in par-

ticular.

The magic of Rudy O’Riley schedule has changed The date has changed for magician/ventriloquist Steve Taylor to bring Rudy O’Riley to life in the Dig Into Reading Magic Show. The free family show was originally scheduled for Saturday, July 27, it has changed to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, at the North Bend Public Library, 1800 Sherman Ave. Summer Reading 2013 Dig into Reading is funded by an Oregon Ready Contributed photo to Read Grant.

Children ages four to 12 and their families are invited to the 45-minute program that will be filled with magic, ventriloquism and humor. Audience participation helps encourage kids to read and use the library.

WindFest will blow into Bandon BANDON — The Port of Bandon will celebrate its sixth annual WindFest from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4.

“Celebrate the Wind” on the boardwalk with festive vendors, music, unique art and great food. The port turns 100 this year, so the

OSU hosts nutrition workshop for foodies BROOKINGS — Applied Nutrition is a comprehensive, two-day workshop presented by Oregon State University Extension Family and Community Health.

This workshop covers basic nutrition and meal planning with applications to disease prevention and weight management. The course is a must-have for everyone but is also perfect for teachers, nurses and anyone who plans meals for others. The course is taught by a registered dietitian.

The course takes place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 12-13, at the SOCC campus in Brookings. The format is fast-paced but provides independent learners the opportunity to prepare coursework afterwards at leisure using the

Coasties art featured at CAM COOS BAY — Twenty-two paintings by 18 artists of the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program will be on view at the Coos Art Museum from Aug. 3 to Oct. 5. These works bring to life the many missions performed by the U.S. Coast Guard.

A dozen of the paintings to be displayed are by West Coast artists and many of these depict West Coast units including surf and air stations, patrols in Portland, San Francisco and Seattle, and inspections of commercial vessels on the Columbia River and at the Portland Shipyard.

The Coast Guard Art Program, which began in 1981, utilizes fine art as an outreach tool for educating diverse audiences about the Coast Guard. Today more than ever, the service addresses an abundance of challenges as it works to maintain the nation’s security at home and abroad and execute its statutory missions such as search and rescue and environmental protection. COGAP art provides visual testimony to the unique contribution the Coast Guard makes to the nation in its multifaceted role as a military, humanitarian and

law enforcement organization.

COGAP members — most of whom are professional artists — donate their works.

The collection currently contains nearly 1,800 pieces celebrating the work of the Coast Guard’s approximately 42,500 active duty members. Since the program’s inception, it has been sponsored by the Salmagundi Club, a noted New York City cultural and art center.

For the duration of the Coast Guard Art Exhibition, admission to the museum will be free for active duty members of the Coast Guard and their families.

Coos Art Museum has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s scenic Southern Coast since 1966. It occupies the historic 1936 Art Deco U.S. Federal Building in downtown Coos Bay. The museum offers a wide range of arts activities including exhibitions, art classes and lectures. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Museum admission: $5 general, $2 students, veterans and seniors, free to museum members.

Kiwanis annual salmon barbecue next Sunday Tickets are on sale now for the Kiwanis Club of Coos Bay’s 56th annual Wave Young Salmon Barbecue, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Bastendorff Beach County Park.

Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for children under 10. The menu includes barbecued salmon steaks (fresh sockeye salmon flown in from Alaska), coleslaw, baked potatoes, rolls, coffee and ice cream. The club meets at noon on Wednesdays at the Red Lion Hotel. Net proceeds from this event support local Kiwanis projects.

Projects include an annual shoe giveaway for disadvantaged kids, scholarships for local high school graduates, “Grandma’s Closet” at Madison Elementary and Sunset middle schools, Marshfield Key Club, and other events that benefit youth in our community. Fourth annual Gorgeous Gramma Pageant seeks contestants NORTH BEND — Gorgeous Grammas will compete in the fourth annual Gorgeous Gramma Pageant hosted by Inland Point.

The Pageant is a fundraiser to benefit seniors in the Coastal Area from Gold Beach to Florence. Last year’s benefit raised $2,034.25 for Lakeside Senior Center and prior to that, North Bend Senior Center received $750.

Audience participation, talent and an assortment of desserts and pastries make this event more popular each year. This years’ pageant and senior talent show will be held at 6 p.m.

Coos County lakes Fishing for largemouth bass and bluegills in the smaller area lakes and ponds has been good.

Fishing has been best in the mornings. Strong afternoon winds are making it difficult to fish effectively in the evenings. Largemouth bass are being caught on plastic worms, spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

Bluegills are being caught on worms or small jigs.

Coos River Basin Trout fishing in streams is open. Anglers should have good success fishing with small spinners or flies for cutthroat trout A few Chinook salmon are still being caught on the Coos Bay bar but fishing has been spotty.

The more consistent fishing for chinook in Coos Bay will start in late August.

Coquille River Basin Anglers should have good success catching cut-

throat trout casting spinners or using flies.

Smallmouth bass are biting on the Mainstem and South Fork Coquille rivers.

Loon Lake Loon Lake was stocked with over 8,000 trout so far this spring. The lake is also warming up and providing good fishing for crappie, bluegill and bass.

Pacific Ocean and beaches: Crabbing has been better in the ocean than inside the local bays.

Fishing for ling cod remains good for anglers.

Tenmile Basin Trout fishing has been slow in Tenmile Lakes due to warm water temperatures.

Bass fishing has been decent. Largemouth bass can be found in both shallow and deep water near weed lines and/or submerged logs Yellow perch fishing has been very good recently.

Winchester Bay Surfperch fishing has been sporadic. Fishing for bottomfish in the Triangle and South Jetty has been successful.
