Soulpie center stage at park COOS BAY — Locals musicians bring plenty of talent to the stage in Mingus Park on Tuesday night for the third free Music on the Bay community concert.

This week the performance begins at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Sept. 17, when “charlie freak” opens. The trio will deliver some blues and spice things up with a little funk in whatever they perform.

Darren Sherley plays bass, Mike Carrillo plays drums and sings and Earl Boots gets in some good licks with his guitar.

Powerful brass sound comes from “Brass Knuckles” with some big city jazz influence, serious blues and gritty soul, and a blend of vocal harmonies.

Mix it all with Mr. Soulpie, who plays harmonica in addition to vocals, and add in a big helping of the Sisters Soulpie and you have one big serving of some steaming hot sound. Together they are Soulpie.

Duffy Bishop Band is featured at the final MOB concert Tuesday, Sept. 24. That performance also begins at 6 p.m. with another local musician, Bobby Lindstrom.

Fire on the Track COOS BAY — In the spirit of the Fun Festival and Prefontaine Memorial Run, a public screening of “Fire on the Track — The Steve Prefontaine Story” will be shown Friday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m., Coos Bay Public Library, 525 Anderson Ave. This one-hour documentary was originally broadcast on CBS on June 4, 1995, and won the 1996 New York Festival World Medal.

After setting state high school records at Marshfield and as a freshman at the University of Oregon he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, which hailed him as “America’s Distance Prodigy.” By the time he died in an auto accident at the age of 24, Pre held all seven American records between 2,000 and 10,000 meters. Off the track, he fought relentlessly for the rights of amateur athletes to prosper for their sacrifices.

He captivated the American track public like no other distance runner. Pre narrowly missed an Olympic medal in 1972 and his life was tragically cut short before he could compete in the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Narrated by Ken Kesey, “Fire On the Track” is told through rare footage and the memories of those who knew him best — his teammates, coaches, family and friends. In-depth footage of the 1972 Olympic 5K final, with comments from Prefontaine’s competitors is included, plus interviews with David Bedford, Frank Shorter, Ian Stewart, Bill Bowerman, Jeff Galloway, Dick Buerkle, Lasse Viren, Dana Carvey, Mac Wilkins, Kenny Moore, Dave Wottle, Alberto Salazar, and many more.

Experience caring for ‘the Elk’ PORT ORFORD — On Friday and Saturday, Sept.

20-21, Curry Watershed Partnership and the U.S. Forest Service will cosponsor “Experience the Elk,” a two-day event to promote stewardship of the National Wild & Scenic Elk River.

The event will kick off at 7 p.m. in the Port Orford Library Freedom of Speech Room, 1421 Oregon St., with speakers, slides and exhibits.

Planned highlights — Lois Miller’s slides of local birds, underwater salmon footage by Thomas Dunklin and an exhibit of Elk River paintings and photographs by local artists.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, participants are invited to spend a full day up the Elk River. Prepare for a full day of fun, educational and service activities.

At 8 a.m. begin with a guided hike led by Jerry McManas and accompanied by Jim Rogers.

Participants will meet at the Elk River Hatchery, 1 approximately 7 ⁄ 2 miles east. Walk Elk River Road two miles to Bald Mountain Creek then

The blooms continue at Shore Acres CHARLESTON — Orchid Day, Saturday, Sept. 21; and Dahlia Day, Saturday, Sept. 28; take place at Shore Acres State Park, 89309 Cape Arago Highway, Charleston.

Experts will be available to answer questions. There will be displays in the Garden House and refreshments both days 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

While most of the really showy orchids are too finicky to grow outdoors in these parts there are a few natives, some of which are hybrids. The locals have variegated foliage or the lady slipper shaped bloom and reside in bogs or in the shade. Orchid growers keep their tropicals indoors with a controlled environment that allows blooms to flourish.

Dahlias do grow well on the Southern Oregon coast, if you can keep them away from marauding deer or burrowing pests.

Dahlias range from small pompom size to as large as a dinner plate. The colors and flower petals can be short and rounded or elongated and tubular like straw.

NORTH BEND — The shrieks of a terrified babysitter and her friends will send chills up your spine.

The horror begins Friday night with On Broadway Thespians’ premiere of “The Halloween Thrillogy,” a trio of one-act plays — “Dead,” “Country Gothic” and “The Babysitter” — at Little Theatre on the Bay in North Bend.

“They all have endings you wouldn’t expect,” said Joe Vos, director of “Country Gothic.”

The plays were chosen as a precursor to Halloween and the fact that the play premieres on “Friday the 13th” just adds to the spooky factor.

“Last year we did a

musical ... this year we decided to go a little darker,” said Christina Cardoza, director of “Babysitter.”

The plays run through the month of September and lead right into the Haunted Theater in October.

“People love to be scared this time of year,” Cardoza

said.

The Sawdust Theatre in Coquille is also hosting a special benefit performance for the Little Theatre on the Bay at 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Sawdust Theatre. Funds raised will help LTOB revive the theatre. To RSVP call LTOB at 541-756-4336 or go to ltob.net.

BROOKINGS — After five years of touring, recording four albums and performing at multiple national and international festivals, Water Tower will bring its roots and rockfueled bluegrass music to Azalea Park in Brookings on Sunday, Sept. 15. The free outdoor concert starts at 1 p.m. at the bandshell.

Seating for the concert is on the lawn in front of the bandshell and the audience is welcome to bring chairs and blankets along with a picnic lunch. No alcohol is permitted in the park. Pets must be leashed.

In case of bad weather, the concert will move indoors to the nearby Chetco Grange Community Center, on the corner of U.S. H ighway 101 and Z immerman Lane in Harbor.

Coquille will host a Harvest Moon Festival COQUILLE — Come and participate in the 2013 Harvest Moon Festival and art auction. The Friends of the Coquille Riverwalk will be presenting Wes Whitman’s collection of paintings at the Coquille Community Building Friday, Oct. 4, 6 p.m., at the Coquille Community Building, 105 N. Birch.

Whitman has donated many of his beautiful paintings for the auction and

the proceeds from the auction will benefit the “Friends of the Riverwalk.” The preview showing of Whitman’s art opens Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the foyer of the Coquille Community Building.

There also will be beer samplings offered by Big Foot Beverages, wine from HV Cellars Winery, and hors d’oeuvres brought in by the Coquille Chamber of Commerce. Tickets can be

purchased in advance at the Coquille chamber office or at the door. Cost of admission is $15 for single ticket or $25 for two, includes etched wine glass.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Riverwalk and the Coquille Chamber of Commerce.

COOS BAY — The 19th annual Sea of Quilts show presented by Coos Sand ‘n Sea Quilters Guild takes place 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept.

22, at the Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon, 3333 Walnut St., Coos Bay. Admission is $3, 12 and under get in free.

Candy Adams of North Bend was nominated by guild members as the 2013 featured quilter of the “Sea of Quilts XIX” show. Adams joined the guild in 2006. She uses paper piecing which allows for precision sewing on miniature quilts.

“I challenge myself to make one miniature quilt a year,” Adams said.

Adams will have her own display

at the Sea of Quilts show. The show will include: nearly 200 quilted items; free hourly demonstrations; a vendor mall and a member boutique; prizes and a hospitality bar with coffee, tea and cookies; and voting for favorite quilts Saturday with award ribbons to be presented Sunday. The 2013 raffle quilt, “Coastal Sunset,” will be on display with raffle tickets available for purchase at the show.

The raffle quilt was made by several guild members and features a pattern

by Cheryl Malkowski, a Roseburg quilt author/designer. The quilt is currently on display at Threads That Bind Quilt Shop in Coos Bay. Raffle tickets can be purchased there. The drawing for the raffle quilt will be on

Money raised by the show helps to fund community service projects of the guild and/or other groups for donation quilts for local Palliative/Hospice Care and hospitalized infants and children.

Hiking the Indian Heaven Wilderness CARSON, Wash. (AP) — Will Rossi of Portland was looking to take advantage of the final bits of summer.

So he and his friends decided on Thomas Lake trail No. 111 in Indian Heaven Wilderness.

“This is my first time here,” said Rossi on Labor Day weekend. “I’d heard about Indian Heaven, but had never been here.”

Thomas Lake No. 111 got a thumbs-up review from Rossi.

“The trail is great,” he said. “It goes through meadows, along lakes and isn’t too difficult.”

Indian Heaven is a 20,600-acre wilderness in the southern Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

It’s a gentle plateau dotted with 175 small lakes and tarns plus many wildflower meadows.

September can be a great month to hike in Indian Heaven if summer weather persists.

The lupine, paintbrush and other wildflowers are gone by September, but so are the mosquitoes.

There are huckleberries

galore, although this year’s crop is not particularly bountiful and pickers will work for their accumulations of the blue and purple treats.

Thomas Lake trail No. 11 is 3.73 miles from Panther Creek road No. 65 to its junction with Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail No. 2000 at Blue Lake. The elevation gain is just 577 feet from trailhead to the PCT, although the high point of the trail at the Umtux Lakes is 156 feet higher than Blue Lake.

Thomas Lake trail is all about lakes.

At 0.67-mile the route passes Thomas, Heather and Dee lakes. At 2.23 miles is tiny Rock Lake, followed by Lake SalaheeTyee at at 3.36 miles and Blue Lake at 3.73 miles.

“We have some terrific fishing in the Indian Heaven lakes,” said John Weinheimer, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife fish biologist in Carson. “With the winter kill, they can be a little hard to figure out.”

Coos County lakes Fall stocking of rainbow trout is not scheduled until the end of September for Bradley Lake and early October for Empire Lakes, Saunders Lake and Powers Pond.

Coos River Basin Trout fishing in streams is open until Oct. 31. The daily limit for trout caught in streams is two per day and all streams and rivers in the basin are open to the use of bait.

Chinook fishing in the Coos Bay estuary slowed down since the previous week, but fishing was still decent to good. The best fishing this past week occurred in the Marshfield Channel and SOMAR areas.

There are also a few salmon higher upstream on the South Fork Coos River and Isthmus Slough. Anglers trolling cut plug herring behind a flasher are having the best success. Most fish have been caught around the slack tides.

Chinook fishing in the Coos Bay estuary was very good last week. The best fishing occurred near the McCullough Bridge up to SOMAR (Coos River). There are also a few salmon higher upstream on the South Fork Coos River and Isthmus Slough. A few anglers have caught big California halibut (up to 30 pounds) while trolling the deep water channel for salmon.

Crabbing in Coos Bay is starting to pick up. Crabbing off the docks continues to be slow. Best places to crab are from the jetties up to the BLM boat ramp off the North Spit.

Clamming is excellent during low tides near Charleston, off Cape Arago Highway, and Clam Island.

Pacific Ocean and beaches The recreational Dungeness crabbing is open in the ocean. Crabbing has been better in the ocean than inside the local bays.

Fishing for bottom fish has been a little slower this past week.

Chinook salmon fishing in the ocean remains open. Anglers have had good success fishing near Coos Bay and Winchester Bay. Trolling with cut plug herring works well. The ocean non-selective coho season is open every Thursday through Saturday until the end of September or until the 19,580 fish quota is met.

All Pacific halibut fishing is closed for the year.

Tenmile Basin Trout fishing has been slow in Tenmile Lakes due to warm water temperatures.

One hundred hatchery rainbow trout were tagged and released into Tenmile Lakes this spring for a tagged fish contest sponsored by Ringo’s Lakeside Marina.

The trout were tagged with 2-inch long, blue, numbered tags that when caught by anglers can be redeemed for a prize at the marina.

Bass fishing has been decent for anglers in Tenmile Lakes. Largemouth bass can be found in both shallow and deep water near weed lines and/or submerged logs. Five or six inch Senko’s are a good bait to use to catch bass in Tenmile Lakes. Anglers should also try to use crankbaits to catch bass.

Yellow perch fishing has been very good in Tenmile Lakes recently. The best baits are jigs and/or night crawlers fished on or near the bottom. Some of the yellow perch being caught are very large (12 to 15 inches).

Coquille River Basin

Winchester Bay

Smallmouth bass are biting on the mainstem and the south fork of the Coquille River. There is no size limit or bag limit on the number of smallmouth bass anglers can keep in the Coquille Basin.

Anglers trolling near Rocky Point boat ramp are still picking up a few Chinook salmon but overall fishing is still on the slow. Anglers are allowed one wild coho per day and two for the season. The wild coho season bag limits are in aggregate with all other wild coho fisheries in the NW and SW coastal basins (not including

Winchester Bay has been good for chinook fishing in the ocean. A few fish are also starting to enter the freshwater and bank anglers at Half Moon Bay and Osprey Point are beginning to have some success.

The annual Winchester Bay Crab Bounty Hunt is also under way and will continue through the end of September. If you catch a tagged crab, take it to the Sportsman’s Cannery to have it verified and checked in. Crab are tagged with a numbered spinner blade attached to the rear leg.
