Shield’s Family Christmas Village relocates

CHARLESTON — Local fireman Capt. Rusty Shield and his family share their passion for trains with the annual Shield’s Family Christmas Village. The train display got started in the Charleston Rural Fire Protection District building where Shield works under Chief Mick Sneddon.

This is the 14th year that the display will be open to the public and the price is just right, too. Admission is by donation in general, but at least 25 cents would be appreciated to help pay for refreshments, electricity and the “facilities” in the new location.

The display has nearly doubled in size and has moved to the Old Charleston School, 64065 Seven Devils Road, Charleston. Just after you leave Charleston proper, heading toward the Holiday Lights at Shore Acres State Park, you will exit left on Seven Devils Road. The Christmas Village traditionally opens the Monday following Thanksgiving, this year on Dec. 2. Hours for the

display are 6-10 p.m. nightly through Tuesday, Dec. 24.

“It’s an extensive collection” and it could fill a semi.

His wife Debbie “puts up with me. You know how handlers are,” said Shield.

Shield said the reason they moved is because of congestion, safety, additional parking and room for a larger display.

Shield got his first train back in the 1950s from his dad when he was 3 years old.

“Every year dad would help get the train set up” around the Christmas tree. It seems love of that memory has triggered a passion for collecting.

Chief Sneddon is also a model train collector. He was involved the first couple of years when they first set up the Christmas Village display to share with the community. Today Sneddon’s vintage O-27 gauge Lionel train collection sits on a shelf. The toy trains were very popular in the 1950s. He chuckled when he said, “I have other things to do. I’ve moved on to horses.”

North Bend lights its Christmas tree NORTH BEND — The City of North Bend will hold its annual Christmas tree lighting celebration starting Thursday, Dec. 12, at 5:45 p.m., at the North Bend Community Center. Santa will arrive at 6 p.m., just in time to help Mayor Rick Wetherell light the Christmas tree. Santa will be handing out candy canes and tickets for bike drawings, thanks to the generosity of North Bend Sanitation. One girl and one boy up to the age of 12 will be eligible to win. The children must be present.

projects from 6–7 p.m.; The Portland Bagel Company will provide bagel samples; The North Bend Downtown Association will also provide beverages; The City of North Bend will provide cookies and coffee and the July Jubilee Princesses will proudly serve our community; K-Dock Radio will be on site with music for Santa’s entrance and entertainment for the event; and the North Bend Fire Department will provide antique fire truck rides around the neighborhood.

Boy Scouts deliver Christmas trees NORTH BEND — Local Boy Scouts of America Troop 761 is taking Christmas tree orders and they are willing to deliver. Three sizes of Nobel fir will be available: 5-6-foot trees, $25; 6-7-foot trees, $30 or 7-8foot trees, $35.

Trees will be available for delivery within Coos Bay or North Bend city limits.

Just Jensens join Handbell Concert COOS BAY —The 14th annual Christmas Handbell Concerts will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, at Faith Lutheran Church, 2741 Sherman Ave., in North Bend.

The Carol-Lons Handbell Choir, directed

by Janell Conner, will perform traditional Christmas carols as well as upbeat holiday selections.

The program for each concert will include musical selections by the Just Jensens Woodwind Quartet with Bonnie Jensen Cox and Judy Marsh Jensen on flute; Judy Jensen Snyder on bass clarinet; and Peggy Jensen Christensen on clarinet.

Nancy Orbison from, Libertyville, Ill., will join them on stage and will delight the audience with unique handbell presentations on a “bell tree.”

Celebrate Arts! 2013 winners now showing FLORENCE — “Modern Gothic,” an oil on canvas piece by Keizer artist Colleen Goodwin-Chronister, has been named Best of Show in the 2013 Celebrate Arts! exhibition. Goodwin-Chronister’s style is contemporary realism. Her exquisite oil paintings reflect a rich color palette and meticulous attention to detail. Her paintings seem to transcend the ordinary and have a distinctive magical quality which characterizes her work.

Ben’s disposition is the consequence of years of toil in the pursuit of personal wealth. Although he has a family, he prefers to live alone without responsibility or dependence … until!

Ben sells an old, dilapidated and unsafe automobile to a poverty-stricken family.

Divine intervention brings about what seems to be the worst outcome. Ben is emotionally shaken as he is come upon by three angels who recount to him his past, present, and future.

Does this sound like the plot of the Dickens Christmas classic? Of course it is. However, it is flavored with a more current setting and entirely different situation.

This tale, in the form of a stage play, is authored by a local theatrical producer, Dan Almich, co-founder of New Artists Productions. “A Christmas Tale” is intended to remind us that no matter how far or how long one goes astray, God is always prepared to guide us back to His side.

Adapted by Dan Almich from Charles Dickens, “A Christmas Tale” will be performed by an all youth New Artists Productions cast of 22. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Dec. 20, 21 and 22, Sprague Community Theater in Bandon.

Coquille’s Victorian Christmas set COQUILLE — Enjoy Coquille’s Lighted Christmas Parade Saturday, Dec. 7, during “Coquille’s Victorian Christmas” celebration. The light parade will start at 6 p.m. at Coquille Valley Middle School, 1115 N. Baxter and end by bringing Santa to the Coquille Community Building, 115 N. Birch.

New indoor archery options locally NORTH BEND — Archery enthusiasts in Coos Bay/North Bend and throughout the South Coast region have an expanded opportunity to hone their skills.

Jim and Joyce Posekany have more than tripled the size of A&J Archery at the Business Center incubator, 2455 Maple Leaf in North Bend.

Jim Posekany opened the business two years ago and during that time expanded not only the shooting range, but service and gear offerings. A&J Archery features Jim’s arrow manufacturing skills, along with bow set-up, repairs and tuning. Retail stock currently includes high-performance releases and sights, veins, broadheads and arrow shafts. In addition, A&J carries Hoyt and Bowtech recurve and compound bows.

“Within two years, we’ve reached Gold Level status with Hoyt Archery,” he said of the leading archery

equipment manufacturer.

The expanded indoor shooting range features a dozen 60-yard lanes, perfect for recreational practice and shooting leagues.

League action starts again in December at 5:30 p.m. Saturdays.

“We would love to see families come and get involved,” Joyce said.

“We’d also like to do a women’s league.”

Jim has been involved in competitive and recreational archery for 27 years, previously having worked as a tech in an archery business. A&J also plans to offer lessons and begin sponsoring shooting leagues.

“Archery isn’t only about putting food on the table,” Jim Posekany said. “This shooting range is about having fun.”

Dungeness crab season delayed NEWPORT — The opening of the ocean commercial Dungeness crab season in Oregon will be delayed through at least Dec. 15.

The commercial Dungeness crab season along the Oregon coast normally opens Dec. 1, but can be delayed to ensure a high-quality product to consumers. The testing measures the percentage of meat in the crab, by weight. Delaying the season allows the crab to fill with meat.

Coastwide testing showed some areas did not meet minimum preseason test criteria. Fishery managers from Oregon, Washington and California met and decided to delay the season opening from Klipsan Beach, Wash., south to the Oregon/California border through at least Dec. 15, pending further results. Testing is still underway in northern California to determine the season status from Point Arena to the Oregon/California border.

Recreational harvest of crab in the ocean off Oregon will open as scheduled on Dec. 1. The recreational harvest of Dungeness crab in Oregon’s bays and estuaries is open yearround.

From Dec. 1-31, visitors and gift-givers can save $5 on the 12month day-use parking permit. Parking fees are required at 26 Oregon state parks, and cost $5 per day, unless you have a 12- or 24-month pass. The 12-month pass is on sale for $25 — regularly $30 — in December.

“This makes a great gift,” said Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) spokesman Chris Havel.

“And with $5 off, it’s also a big bargain.” The permits are transferable from vehicle to vehicle, making them a versatile value in today’s economy. OPRD also offers a 24-month pass, priced at $50, that Havel said is “always a good deal.”

The Oregon Coast Passport is also discounted $5 in December. See Lybia from your seat COOS BAY — The “Armchair Film Adventure” series at Coos Bay Public Library continues on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. in the Myrtlewood Meeting Room. A “7 Days” video tour of Libya is this month’s destination.

Libya is one of the most interesting desert countries and it is gradually opening its doors to the outside world. It is a veritable treasure trove of history. Ancient art and culture of various epochs, as well as the fascinating exotic flair of the Orient, make Libya a wonderful and fascinating holiday destination.

The capital, Tripoli, awakes early in the morning as fishermen return from their nocturnal work at sea along with their catch, which is fresh and tasty and ready for market. In antiquity, Tripoli was called Oea and was one of the three cities of Tripolitania. Seventy kilometers west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its theater has been rebuilt and is an impres-

sive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. It was originally built by the Romans who came here after the Phoenicians and gave the city a completely new appearance. It could accommodate up to 5,000 onlookers.

Further into the desert, Kirkiba Camp consists of circular straw huts at the foot of huge sand dunes. From here one can visit Garma, now in ruins, but about 2,000 years ago it was the capital of the Garamantes Realm. On the country’s eastern Mediterranean coast, ancient Cyrenaika is the largest city in today’s Benghazi. Of the historic city of the Pentapolis, the Greek five-city alliance, nothing remains today as it is now covered by modern city buildings. Magnificent history, untouched coastlines and endless desert landscapes with oasis settlements, salt lakes, rock paintings and Berber towns: Libya, a little-known land in amazing North Africa.

Shore Acres Holiday Lights open 4-9:30 p.m. until New Year’s Eve The Shore Acres garden is open each evening festooned with 300,000 lights arranged on dozens of sculptures, including a life-size orca and gray whale, as well as 26 large holiday trees. Visit the decorated Garden House for refreshments and stop by the Performance Pavilion for holiday entertainment. Last year, more than 47,000 visitors saw the light display. YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE Wintering Shorebirds The mudflats around Coos Bay, the lower Coquille River, Winchester Bay and others provide winter feeding areas for shorebirds of a variety of species. While most shorebirds winter much farther south than the Oregon Coast, some do winter here. Those interested in seeing these birds will find an opportunity along Cape Arago Highway, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Area and New River Area of Critical Environmental Concern.

Marine Mammals Seal and sea lion abundance in coastal waters around Coos County is high this time of year, especially south of Coos Bay. At Simpson Reef, a heavily used haul out exists.

From the look out, viewers can see California sea lions, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and elephant seals.

Do not approach seals and sea lions you may find on Oregon beaches. If you think an animal you find is, in fact, in trouble, contact your local ODFW office to report the animal or contact the Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 800-452-7888.

FISHING TIP: With recent rains, early steelhead are beginning to move into some rivers, including the Coos and Coquille.

Tenmile Basin Bass fishing has been decent for anglers in Tenmile Lakes but will slow down as the water temperatures drop.

Largemouth bass can be found in both shallow and deep water, near weed lines and/or submerged logs. Five- or sixinch Senko’s and crankbaits are a good choices to use to catch bass in Tenmile Lakes.

Yellow perch fishing has been very good in Tenmile Lakes recently. Anglers are catching lots of yellow perch fishing in water 20 feet or deeper. If fishing slows down in one location don’t be afraid to pick up and move to another spot.

The best baits are jigs and/or night crawlers fished on or near the bottom. Some of the yellow perch being caught are very large (12 to 15 inches).

Fishing for wild coho is open in Tenmile Lakes until Dec. 31. The daily bag limit is one wild coho adult per day and five for the season. The wild coho season bag limits are in aggregate with all other wild coho fisheries in the NW and SW coastal basins (not including the ocean season). Anglers have reported catching a few coho in the upper arms of Tenmile Lakes.

Pacific Ocean and beaches Recreational Dungeness crabbing will reopen in the ocean on Dec. 15.

Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, lingcod and cabezon is now open at all depths. The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two). Retention of one cabezon per day is still allowed.

Coquille River Basin The wild coho season closed. Winter steelhead will be moving into the area rivers with the recent rains. Anglers usually start catching steelhead around at the end of November/beginning of December but the best fishing is usually later in the winter. A few anglers have been plunking for steelhead at the Coquille Boat Ramp area.

HUNTING Coyote populations are good in Coos County and they will often respond to calls. Calling coyotes in the Coast Range is challenging due to brush. Many landowners with sheep are complaining about losses of sheep to coyote predation.

Hunters interested in hunting coyotes may find success in asking for permission to hunt private land where landowners are losing sheep.

Quail populations are also decreased compared to the past, but they are doing better than grouse. This is likely due to the fact that their broods hatch later in the spring than grouse. Hunters wanting to harvest quail will find the best hunting either in the vicinity of farmland for California quail or on exposed ridges for mountain quail.

Cougar season is currently open. Hunters can expect an average year. Cougars are abundant throughout with indicators pointing to stable or increasing numbers. Hunting cougar is a challenge because these animals are very secretive, but harvest success is greatest adjacent to private land with high deer populations using a predator call.

Waterfowl hunting in bays and marshes has been reasonably good due to the lack in precipitation. Inland fields have not experienced extensive flooding yet. However, the weather forecast indicates rain may be in our forecast.

When enough rain occurs, waterfowl will move to inland fields to take advantage of feeding opportunities in flooded fields. Hunters will have to get permission to access private lands in the Coos and Coquille River basins to find hunting opportunities in these areas.

Until this flooding occurs and birds move as a result, places to hunt closer to the coast in Coos County include, but are not limited to, certain islands in Coos Bay, Bandon Marsh Unit of Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge and parts of New River ACEC, near Langlois.
