COOS BAY — Now, as much as ever, the Ecumenical Emergency Food Cupboard is in need of donations to help feed the hungry. Not only are they seeing a steady stream of people in need, but donations over the next two months could help the agency to be able to feed even more of the hungry. The food cupboard is seeking a grant that will depend on the pounds of food and money they receive in donations over the months of March and April. “The overall share will be determined by the gifts we receive from the community,” said the food cupboard’s Jerry Stonebraker. Stonebraker says the Ecumenical Emergency Food Cupboard, the second largest client of South Coast Food Share, is once again in the running for the Feinstein Grant to End Hunger. The foundation, out of Rhode Island, gives millions of dollars to food programs nationwide and is known to be the largest hunger program in our country. They allow $1 for each item of food or pound of food to be counted toward their prospective grant total. SEE GRANT | A8

There likely will be two providers at all times. Services offered include urine testing for urinary tract infections,

swabbing for strep throat, treatment for colds and flus, bug bites and tetanus shots. It doesn’t treat broken bones, people with difficulty breathing or other comprehensive care. Patients usually waited 10 to 15 minutes so far to see a provider,Lund said. “It’s a quick, one-stop shop,” Lund said. Express Care accepts most health insurance, as well as cash for those without insurance. The size of the facility allowed for flexibility. “We’re small enough we can really adapt to the community as needed,” Lund said. COOS BAY — There is a new place to receive health care. Bay Clinic opened its Express Care on March 10 after years of planning and about $100,000 of remodeling. It was a long time coming, according to doctors Peter Lund and Barbara Zink, both of whom rotate shifts with other doctors from Bay Clinic and North Bend Medical Center at the clinic. Lund is an internist and Zink is a pediatrician. “This is a service I’ve been trying to provide for years without support,” Lund said. He said he started talking about an urgent care-type facility about six years ago. He said it was more costeffective and quicker than the emergency room for simple care. North Bend Medical Center and Bay Area Hospital also plan to add after hours clinics. “We want to get people in, taken care of and on their way,” Lund said. Bay Clinic and the local coordi-

WASHINGTON — In the most comprehensive sanctions against Russia since the end of the Cold War, President Barack Obama on Monday froze the U.S. assets of seven Russian officials, including top advisers to President Vladimir Putin, for their support of Crimea’s vote to secede from Ukraine. Obama said he was moving to “increase the cost” to Russia, and he warned that more people could face financial punishment. “If Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, we stand ready to impose further sanctions,” Obama said. He added in a brief statement from the White House that he still believes there could be a diplomatic resolution to the crisis and that the sanctions can be calibrated based on whether Russia escalates or pulls back in its involvement. The Treasury Department also is imposing sanctions on four SEE SANCTIONS | A8
