REEDSPORT — Reedsport police shut down part of U.S. Highway 101 on Saturday morning after a bicyclist discovered a potentially dangerous object in Reedsport. The highway reopened around 2:30 p.m. The highway was closed from Winchester Avenue to state Highway 38 after the discovery of a small, black object on a sidewalk. In addition to shutting down the highway, police also kept pedestrians and bicyclists from using the sidewalks through the area. Police called the Oregon State Police bomb squad from Medford to assist in the investigation. Police used a robot to pick up the device and put it in a heavy box. It was then transported by a technician to the waiting OSP van,

parked nearby. The “device” was described as approximately five to six inches long and an inch in diameter. It was wrapped in tape with a fuse sticking out of one end. It was confirmed to be a “pipe bomb.” The road and sidewalks were closed to “prevent any accidental detonation or collateral damage in case of detonation,” according to a news release from the Reedsport Police Department. Officials reopened the roadway after the object was removed. Specifics on what the object was were not available. Along with Reedsport police and the OSP bomb squad, Reedsport Fire Department, Winchester Bay Fire Department, Douglas County CERT and the Douglas County Sheriff’s office also responded and helped close streets.

A bicyclist spotted this “device” on the sidewalk along U.S. Highway 101 in Reedsport, Saturday. The Oregon State Police Hazardous Device technicians were called in.

Even though it will only be a month since the death of Reedsport Police Chief Mark Fandrey, the city may decide to begin recruiting for a new chief as early as August. “Right now we’re putting together a posting for the opening,” city manager Jonathan Wright said. “If the council sees fit to allow staff to (recruit) after the Aug. 5 city council meeting then, the next day, we will post it. It will post for 60 days.” Wright said, since the department also lost an officer before the death of Fandrey in July, the city feels the need to seek a new chief. “The recruitment is still open,” he said. “We, so far, have two applicants.” That officer was going to be used for a new School Resource Officer position this fall at Reedsport schools. That has been put on hold. A new chief probably won’t come soon. “We’re looking about six months,” Wright said of the process. “By the time you open up the recruitment, then go through the interviews, then have to do the background investigation, that takes time.” He said he expects the city will also do on-site visits with a candidate’s current agency, family, friends and people who have worked with them. “Make sure that they’re going to be a good fit for the community,” he said. Wright says they’ll use a variety of agencies to recruit for a new chief.
