WOMEN’S HEALTH Day in Bandon Saturday, Feb. 18, will focus on “A Matter of Heart,” with a cardiologist and others sharing a wealth of knowledge on heart health. This 9th annual Women’s Health Day will begin with coffee and registration at 8:30 a.m. in the Harbortown Events Center, 325 Second St., S.E., in Old Town Bandon. All women interested are invited. Advance registration is highly recommended. Cost is $10 and includes a delicious hearthealthy lunch. “Knowledge can save your life,” said Mary Kemp, community health education nurse who is organizing Women’s Health Day. “Now more than ever, it’s important to keep yourself informed of issues that affect your heart health. The good news is heart disease is a problem you can do something about.” Research shows that women can lower their heart disease risk enormously - by 82 percent - simply by leading a healthy lifestyle or in some cases taking medication to control risk factors, Kemp added. The Women’s Health Day keynote speaker, Dr. Frances Munkenbeck, is from the Oregon Cardiology Institute in Eugene. She is a cardiologist, board certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases, as well as a fellow in the American College of Cardiology. She will provide up-to-date information to help identify potential risks of heart disease and identify options to prevent or reduce complications of cardiovascular prob-

Joining Dr. Munkenbeck on the agenda for the day will be Stephanie Polizzi, registered dietitian with the OSU Extension Office and Nanci Johnson, certified personal trainer with Optimum Health & Fitness, to address lifestyle changes. Additional discussion by local women who have been challenged with heart conditions, professionals facilitating community programs and therapies for women’s health also will be available. The annual silent auction will showcase items handcrafted by area artisans, with proceeds benefiting Southern Coos Health Foundation and the work it does in support of the community’s access to quality healthcare services at Southern Coos Hospital. People will be on hand to share information on resources for health in the area.
