BANDON — Agents at Bandon insurance businesses are helping local residents get health insurance through the Cover Oregon exchange. Bandon residents who want to apply for health insurance, or shop for better insurance prices, have only a short time to do so. Oregon’s 2014 open enrollment period ends March 31. With an agent, clients can apply, review plans and enroll in less than an hour, according to Jesse Sweet of Sweet Insurance Agency. In addition to speeding enrollment, licensed agents also help clients identify the best options. A single application can result in 30 or more insurance quotes. Kriston Correll, of Juul Insurance Agency, notes that experienced agents can explain policies, help clients avoid plans that offer low premiums but high deductibles, and
Free assistance worth the effort The Cover Oregon website was supposed to connect Oregon residents to an online health insurance marketplace. Widely publicized problems with site programming have limited exchange access to agents and community health partners only. The agent portal has been active for many weeks. Though the system is secure, with multiple password and account protection protocols, the cumbersome interface has resulted in many hours of work for agents. But guiding clients through the application process is an extension of good customer service. And helping individuals access health insurance, including many who were previously without
BANDON — Should Bandon regulate where medical marijuana dispensaries are allowed? If so, where should they be located? These are some of the questions the Bandon City Council is grappling with as it seeks to establish a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries to allow time to discuss planning guidelines to govern the shops. The council voted unanimously last month to put a 120-day moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries but a procedural hearing is required to enact the ban. That public hearing is set for 5 p.m. Monday, March 24, in City Council chambers. On Aug. 14, Gov. John Kitzhaber signed House Bill 3460 into law, which authorized the establishment of medical marijuana dispensaries. The final temporary rules governing such dispensaries were recently prepared by the Oregon Health Authority and went into effect March 1. If the council enacts the 120-day moratorium, it will then consider if and what regulations to put into place. A special Planning Commission meeting will be held tonight, Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. for commissioners to begin the discussion of where such dispensaries should be located in regard to the city’s planning guidelines.

Attendees recall Bandon High fire By Jim Proehl Contributing writer, Bandon Western World
BANDON — An appreciative audience shared the story of the night Bandon High School burned at a well-attended event at the Bandon Historical Society Museum Feb. 20. An arson fire destroyed Bandon High on Jan. 23, 1974. The museum has been using the 40th anniversary of the fire to collect, preserve and share the history of the high school fire. Bandon Mayor Mary Schamehorn was the keynote speaker for the evening. In 1974, Schamehorn was a reporter for the Western World. She was one of the first on the scene and took thorough photographs of the fire and its aftermath. That photo collection was the centerpiece of the program. Fire chief Lanny Boston and Barry Winters shared the memories of firefighters present at the fire. Boston displayed the helmet he wore the night of the fire, still coated in tar that melted and overflowed the high school’s rain gutters. School Superintendent Diane Buche presented a bag of coins to the museum that survived the fire. Bandon High alumnus Bob Elliott loaned his letterman’s sweater and yearbook for the event and donated a trophy Bandon High received for
