BANDON — It’s been a busy year and people have kept up with the news by reading the paper, both in print and online, as well as following the Bandon Western World on Facebook and Twitter. While it’s hard to keep track of the most read stories of the year in the print version of the paper, online impressions give us a fairly accurate list of the year’s top stories, though sometimes stories may be read and shared, creating more impressions. For example, it may be hard to believe that the No. 2 story is about a fire on state Highway 42S, but it depends on how often the story was viewed and shared online. That’s why the weekly Fishing Report by Tony Roszkowski also ends up in our Top 13 for 2013. If the same topic, but a different story appears in our Top 13, we’re not listing it twice, however. Here’s a list of the online Top 13 stories for 2013 for Bandon Western World (note the top 5 are accompanied by a couple of paragraphs. No. 1 April 15: Bandon midwife alleges discrimination by D.A. 2,101 views COQUILLE — An unlicensed Bandon midwife wants only to be treated like others in the medical field, her lawyer asserted in court Monday. Marcene Rebeck’s defense attorney, Laura Fine Moro, repeatedly pushed the idea that the midwife has been unjustly discriminated against because her practice, though legal, is unlicensed in Oregon. Rebeck is charged with negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter for the 2011 death of an infant she delivered. Moro argued the state and Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier are unjustly targeting Rebeck.

June 6: Youth an inspiration to others. Grant Crim was named a “Hero of Hope” by the American Cancer Society. The case was brought forward by prosecutors, not the victim’s family, nearly a year after it occurred, Moro said. This is the first time in Frasier’s near three decades in this county that a case involving a child death like this one has been brought to trial.

No. 2 July 5: Bear Creek fire detours traffic near Bandon 1,935 views BANDON — A fire off Highway 42S drew multiple fire engine companies from throughout the county and detoured traffic at two locations Friday afternoon. Dominique Ray of the Coos Forest Protective Association said the socalled Bear Creek Fire was burning in reproduction timber and slash near the

June 6: Youth an inspiration to others 1,767 views COQUILLE — To look at Grant Crim, one would never believe he has battled cancer for 15 of his 17 years. Tall and imposing, Grant can rock the cool, shade-wearing bad boy look or exude the cuddly softness of a teddy bear. Those who know him would say he is definitely both. Grant is a 15-year astrocytoma brain tumor survivor. He was first diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1997 at 22 months old. He has survived two recurrences, endured multiple surgeries, years of chemotherapy and ultimately the loss of most of his vision. Despite this, he volunteers his time, offering hope to other patients and their families, and works toward the American Cancer Society’s goal of ending cancer once and for all. For his efforts, Grant has been named a “Hero of Hope” by The American Cancer Society’s Great-West Division.

BANDON — Although winter has just officially started, it will soon be the time for the city of Bandon to order the fireworks for next year’s annual Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza. As of the November utility billing, a total of 352 Bandon electric customers are participating in the Fourth of July fireworks contribution program. Of those, 349 customers are contributing $1 per month and three customers are contributing $5 per month, for a total $4,434 over the last 12 months, according to City Manager Matt Winkel. “This represents an increase of more than 60 percent in both the number of customers and total annual contributions since 2011, when a total of 218 customers were participating and contributed $2,760,” Winkel said. All of these funds are turned over to the Chamber of Commerce, which has been spearheading the effort to raise the $13,000 necessary to purchase the fireworks each year. Those interested in signing up for the monthly utility bill contribution can simply check the box in the upper-right corner of their utility bill return stub. Only check the box once and $1 will be automatically be added to each subsequent monthly bill until the city is notificed that you want to discontinue the donation, which can be done at any time. Those who would like to contribute additional money or make one-time donations to the Fireworks Fund, contact the front desk clerk at City Hall at 541-347-2437, email utilitybilling@ci.bandon.or.us, or contact Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Miller at 541-347-9616, e-mail bandoncc@mycomspan.com.
