BANDON — Coos County law enforcement have suspended a search for an Alzheimer’s patient who went missing Thursday from his Bandon home. Coos County sheriff’s deputies, along with Bandon police and Coos County Search and Rescue members, spent all of Friday and Saturday searching for 78-

Christopher Lane, just northeast of Bandon, around 3:30 p.m. Thursday when his wife left to go into town. After returning home in the evening, she noticed he was gone and called the Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Rogers is known in the past to have walked to Bullards Beach State Park and even as far as into the town of Bandon from his home.

Rogers is described as in good health and very mobile. He is 5-feet, 9-inches, 185 pounds, and has brown hair with gray sides, brown eyes, a mustache and glasses. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, boots, an unknown type of shirt, and a dark baseball cap with a fish on it. Anyone with information about Rogers’ disappearance is asked to call the Coos County Sheriff’s Office at 541396-7800.

certified for use in these locations and are only applied by employees who are properly trained and licensed, he added. The city maintains data sheets and records regarding exactly what type of herbicides are being used. The city marks with small green flags the areas where herbicides have been applied. “Many people have asked why the city does not give notice to residents along a street in advance of the spraying,” Winkel said. “The difficulty with providing pre-spraying notification is that the city does not know very far in advance when the spraying will be taking place. The decision to spray is not

made until the morning of the spraying, since it is contingent on the growth stage of the weeds, the time since the last rainfall, and most particularly wind conditions. Then, once the spraying starts, how long it will continue and the extent area to be sprayed will depend upon the ever changing wind and precipitation conditions.” Many citizens prefer not to have herbicides sprayed in the rights of way adjacent to their property, and the city fully respects those concerns, Winkel said. The city maintains a list of properties, whose owners do not want herbicides sprayed in the adjacent rights of way. The only requirement is that the

individual making the request accepts the responsibility of keeping the weeds cut and away from the edge of the pavement, cleared from the sidewalks and under control in any drainage ways and ditches within the subject area. Anyone who would like more information on the type of chemicals used by the city, or if those would like the right of way adjacent to their property to be listed as a herbicide “No Spray” area and are willing to help keep those areas free of problem weeds and vegetation, can contact public works office manager Tammy Smith at 347-2427, ext. 241, or e-mail tsmith@ci.bandon.or.us.

High school students help local community Vacation Bible School planned

BANDON — The Bandon High School leadership class announces its collaboration with the efforts of the PGE Foundation and The Oregon Community Foundation by participating in the Community 101 program. This is the sixth year the class has participated in Community 101, allowing them to distribute more than $30,000 in grants to local nonprofits over that time period and conduct approximately 700 hours of community service per year, according to leadership teacher Silia Polamalu. Community 101 is a curriculum-based program that provides students with opportunities for service and leadership through philanthropy and volunteering. Students participating in Community 101 identify community issues, visit nonprofits and distribute grants. The BHS leadership class acquired grant money from The Ford Family Foundation this year and through TFFF was able to present $5,300 in grant money to the following nonprofits organizations on May 21 in the Otis K Murray Court cafeteria: ■ ASPIRE: $300 to transport students to a college campus and a college fair in the 2014-2015 school year. ■ Bandon Community Emergency Response Team (CERT): $500 to provide CERT members with emergency equipment. ■ Bandon Community Preschool: $300 to provide a comfortable reading area and new books. ■ Bandon High School athletic department: $300 to support a drug testing program for extracurricular activities

Each year the class also does a community service project. Trent Hatfield of BHS and Tom Rumreich of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, provided the class with the opportunity to help with site preparation on the dam above the Bandon Fish Hatchery. As described in a previous article in the Bandon Western World, repair work must be done to the spillway at the dam. Before that could happen, vegetation had to be removed from the earthen dam. The leadership class plus a few other

BHS students spent five hours on April 15 working with employees of ODFW to cut and clear brush, Polamalu explained. “The students did a great job this year,” Polamalu said. “Learning the value of volunteering is one of the most important parts of this program. I think they get a glimpse of the impact they are having with Community 101 when they get to do things such as work alongside volunteers, help people in need, or award grant checks to non-profits.” “The students from Bandon High School were invaluable in clearing trees and brush off the Ferry Creek dam face,” said Rumreich. “Trees and brush compromise the integrity of any dam. Ferry Creek Dam is a crit-

ically important dam that not only supplies irreplaceable water to the Bandon Fish Hatchery, but it also supplies municipal water for the city of Bandon.” For more information, contact Silia Polamalu at darrenp@bandon.k12.or. us or call Bandon High School at 541-347-4413. The Community 101 program is administered by the PGE Foundation and The Oregon Community Foundation, who are partnering to expand Community 101 to more schools throughout the state. For more information on Community 101, visit www.oregoncf.org/c101 or call Jennesa Datema, Community 101 coordinator, The Oregon Community Foundation, at 503-552-3509.

Best Western brings back familiar face Bandon Western World

Anthony Muirhead

BANDON — After a two and a half year assignment in Bend, Anthony Muirhead is back as the new general manager for the Best Western Inn at Face Rock Hotel & Suites in Bandon-bythe-Sea. Muirhead grew up in Myrtle Point, where he graduated from high school in 2004. He chose to stay on the South Coast and study political science at Southwestern Oregon Community College. While

attending college, he started working at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort and discovered a passion for the hospitality industry. While working at Bandon Dunes, Muirhead started a family and is the very proud father to Madison and Abigail. He then moved to Corvallis to pursue his career, where he managed the front office at the Holiday Inn Express on the River. Muirhead returned to Bandon to become the front office manager and sales manager at the Inn at Face Rock,

where he had great success and fell in love all over again with Bandon. “Anthony left us for Bend to pursue an opportunity as front office manager at the Riverhouse Hotel & Convention Center only to return home to the hotel’s top position,” said a Best Western spokesman. Muirhead is happy to be back. “I hope to make a positive impact on the property and the community I love so much!” he said.

Esscents Candles & Accessories opens in Old Town By Geneva Miller Contributing writer Bandon Western World

BANDON — Lighting a candle is an essential part of every day for Renee Miner. She shares the simple pleasure of light and fragrance at Esscents Candles & Accessories, in Old Town Bandon. “Candles, I’ve always loved them — the scents, shape, the colors,” said Miner. She’s spent years learning the science of candles. And she shares her discoveries, helping customers choose the best candle for every place in the home. Unscented tapers add traditional elegance to the dining table. Citronella candles in beachy or holiday-themed buckets are perfect for the patio. Not sure what to choose? The fragrance of the month is a good place to start. Miner says highlighting seasonal scents is easy. “In the summer, you want something crisp and clean, maybe floral,” she said. “In the winter, you want spiced apple or pumpkin, something that’s going to give you that cozy, homey feeling.” Miner recently moved to Bandon from California. She was raised in in Toledo, in

Alive After Five returns to Bandon on Friday, June 20. Lincoln County, Oregon. She visited several Oregon coast towns, searching for the ideal candle shop location, but kept returning to Bandon. The tourism industry makes for a good retail location, and the small town comfortably reminds her of her childhood home.

Miner was a founding member of the Northern Lights at-home sales team. When she learned the company had closed its home sales, she decided it was time to set up her own retail shop. The walls and displays are decked with candles in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and scents. Miner credits her mother, Dolores Armstrong, for providing creative accents, such as plants and floral arrangements, throughout the shop. Miner celebrated a grand opening ribbon cutting with the Bandon Chamber of Commerce on May 1. Esscents features paraffin candles by Northern

Lights and A Cheerful Giver, as well as private label soy and bees wax candles. All wicks are lead-free cotton.

Keep the candle burning Renee Miner offers tips to make the most of your candles. Check the diameter of your candle: The first time you light a candle, keep the flame burning one hour for each diameter inch, so the wax warms all the way to the edge of the candle. If your candle is dripping or smoking, check its placement. It’s probably too near a source of draft, such as a ceiling fan or window.

Chamber represented at Visitor Training Bandon Western World

BANDON — Three of Bandon’s Visitor Center volunteer staff were in attendance at the May 2014 Oregon Visitor Training Information Conference held in Coos Bay. Brenda Schurtz, Linda Frick and Klaus Wolff took the opportunity to walk like a tourist through several regional attractions — crabbing, feasting at the culinary institute and taking a local brew pub break. “I’m pleased that several of my volunteers were able to attend,” said Bandon Chamber Executive Director Julie Miller. “This was a great opportunity for them to interact with other visitor center staff and get a feel for how they operate, and to learn about the other areas.” The annual conference focuses on training staff who work or volunteer in a front line visitor service capacity. Presentations highlighted the latest updates on activities and events from organizations around the state, including Oregon’s seven regional tourism organizations,Oregon State Parks, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Travel Oregon.
