WRIGHT PAGES | OCTOBER 2013

Wright In The Middle We the people have the right to bear arms, but do we have the right to buy a semi-automatic AR-15? Aaron Alexis also known as the Navy Yard shooter is the latest mass murder who has found loopholes in our forefathers Constitution. But has this latest incident sparked interest in gun control among the states? When speaking to Mr. Morse, 11th grade World History teacher at RWPCS, he said "I believe in the Second Amendment... but we need restrictions." I agree you have a right to bear arms, but at what point do draw the line? Mr. Young, 11th grade Assistant Principal, stated "The Second Amendment is great, but the government needs to control the types of ammo and weapons civilians carry." There have been 10 mass murders in the last 10 years involving guns of great caliber, fully automated, and hold large amounts of ammunition. How many more have to die before Congress takes action? "We are allowing the NRA and Gun lobbyists to run this country. It should be agreed that we as a people need to stand up and say something. We

need strict laws in place to protect the public and protect ourselves from these maniacs with guns. But to do that we need to take a stand and let it be known, before we lose anymore lives to senseless gun violence” stated Morse. Richard Wright Public Charter School was in between the Navy Yard building 197 and Family Matters, the morning assembly, when shots were fired.

Some students had barely entered the building before being rapidly ushered in by military enforcement. This experience has changed the perception of what laws mean to them. “I feel as though it wasn't a problem until it happened near my school. It became a problem when I realized it could happen to me. It is a worldwide problem” said Justin Crowder, 11th grade student at RWPCS. “I believe in the Second Amendment to a certain extent, meaning I believe in handguns not semi-automatic weapons.” Due the political power of the NRA and the Second Amendment Congress has been having a difficult time reviewing the gun laws of America. NRA president Jim Porter said “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” I feel as if at this point in my life after the Navy Yard shooting, Congress not only need to end but take a stand and decide on a solution that lowers gun violence in America. And with the NRA controlling the system...I feel that any organization or business that supports such lethal weapons are responsible for gun violence.
