FOR HUNDREDS OF LUCKY HENS Hen welfare charity, the British Hen Welfare Trust, will be holding a re-homing day on Sunday 30th November and hopes to find new homes for hundreds of ex-bat hens this Christmas. The national charity is well-known for its pioneering work in re-homing commercial laying hens and through its nationwide team of volunteers has found homes for over 430,000 hens since it started in 2005. The charity operates out of its main office in Devon and finds new homes for hens right across the UK. On 30th November 200 hens will get the chance to enjoy an early Christmas courtesy of our Oxfordshire team and embark on an exciting and new free range future. Local Co-ordinator for the charity, Lucy Singh, and her team of dedicated volunteers have helped over 3,500 hens so far, and will be giving up their time to help more. Lucy told us: “These birds have worked hard in the commercial environment and giving them a home for Christmas and beyond will reward adopters with a feel-good factor better than any wrapped prezzie under the Christmas tree. Please help us give as many hens as

possible the opportunity to enjoy some free range fun.” The lucky hens, which would otherwise go to slaughter at the end of their commercial life aged just over 18 months, are being re-homed to kind-hearted members of the public, and will go on to become muchloved family pets. Just think you could be enjoying free range eggnog with family and friends this Christmas using eggs from your own hens how eggciting! As the story unfolds in both Britain and Afghanistan the lives of all four of the characters are affected in different ways. Emma suffers the loneliness of being a wife left behind to worry about her husband. Fatima fears for the changes she sees in her beloved Youssef, traumatised by the death of his family in a tragic accident of war. Caught up in a war they had no part in creating both Lofty and Youssef are forced to confront their beliefs and see the world in new ways. The author describes the dangers that Lofty and Youssef both face and the fears and emotions that are felt by the girls they left behind them. The war affects all of them in different ways and none of them will ever be the same again.
