What’s going on in the local area?

Once again the Lions from Southam Lions Club are painting the float, oiling the wheels and generally gearing themselves up for the Christmas Santa Sleigh visits to Southam and the surrounding villages. The Activity Schedule is shown below so watch out for the cheery bells, those ever popular Christmas Carols and the cheeky chatter of the Lions when they hit where you live in December or indeed SOUTHAM EAST on November 29th! In fact Father Christmas will be here in Southam for the Christmas Lights ‘Switch –On’ and that will be FRIDAY NOVEMBER 28th. Once again there will be lots of fun things happening with a mini fair and stalls all to herald the switching on of those fantastic lights at 6pm. Children can come and see Father Christmas outside The Mint and if they are very good, rumour has it that chocolate goodies will be handed out by the Great Man!!

Santa is preparing his sleigh and getting the reindeers fit and ready for the festive season. He will be making his first appearance at the switch on of Southam’s Christmas Lights on Friday 28th November. The fun gets underway at 4.30pm with the fun fair and stalls open for business. Local radio star Bob Brolly MBE will be our MC for the event, with the switch on by Santa, Bob Brolly and the Mayor Cllr Mark Willoughby at 6pm. Southam Baking Circle As we approach our first birthday, the first meeting where I sat in an empty room, hoping that at least one person turns up, eight people were at this meeting. I am so happy that I started this happy, vibrant club. Numbers still vary from meeting to meeting, normally around 15, the essence of the club remains the same. It’s all about baking and fun. You don’t have to be good, although we do have some fab bakers, just enjoy baking and of course love eating cake. Meetings are only £4 and this includes all ingredients and we throw in a cuppa, such fantastic value. Each meeting has a theme and an activity, November is all about home-made gifts and we shall be making shortbread and peppermint creams, and December we shall be having a birthday party with a free raffle. The meeting are all about fun, meeting new people, making friends and this has been especially good when you have just moved to the area as several of our members have. Problem behaviour is no issue to Lynne! I first started dog training over 17 years ago and got into it purely by accident. I took on a dog that had lots of behavioural problems and after taking advice from various sources I made lots of changes. Over the next few months the improvement was so dramatic that I wanted to learn more about how dogs learn and how I could communicate with them more productively. I helped out at a local dog training club learning as I went along and through hard work and dedication found myself dealing with “problem dogs” on a regular basis. This became my specialist area and as a result I was offered a 3 year stint on BBC’s ‘Dog Borstal’!

I now help owners with dogs displaying aggression towards people and other dogs, separation anxiety, destructiveness and countless other problems. Although I call myself a dog trainer and behaviourist, I actually teach people to do what I would do in their situation to get the best possible result when trying to eliminate unwanted behaviours. It is normally the combination of the particular dog and owner that contributes to the problem and getting them to communicate better is the first step. I visit lots of owners who have had “help” previously from other behaviourists or trainers which has not rectified the problem for various reasons. Failure in the past does not

necessarily mean that the problem cannot be resolved. Just that whatever methods,techniques and guidelines issued were not suited to the owner or dog.

When dealing with Behavioural Problems I usually visit the owner and dog at home so that we can investigate why the dog is doing the unwanted behaviours and what we can change to improve things. By the end of the session we have agreed on an action plan and whilst the changes are implemented I give ongoing support for as long as needed at no extra cost. All dogs and people are different. Techniques and methods that suit one may not be appropriate for the next. Owners need to be mentally and physically capable of implementing the changes and following the training regime required otherwise things will not improve and could actually become worse. I pride myself on being able to establish a workable plan for the people and dogs that I deal with so that my success rate is one of the highest around! For those owners who are about to get a puppy I also do “Puppy Home Visits” which allow the owner to get everything right from the start to avoid problems in the future. Puppies are “learning machines” however they learn the bad stuff as quickly as they learn the good.
