Veggie, Vegan...

or just cutting down on meat So, how do you feel about Veganuary? Did you do it? Did you think about doing it? I admit I fell into the ‘thought about it’ camp! My name is Harriet. I have a background in Nutritional Therapy and a passion for health, wellbeing and bringing people together to talk about, and engage in it! I came to nutrition from a love of food and eating and haven’t stopped learning and trying different recipes ever since. The reason I almost tried Veganuary was therefore based on personal interest in the subject. I decided not to take up the challenge in the end as it felt a bit ‘faddy’ and a bit too much like a new year’s resolution. I feel strongly about making small simple changes that are sustainable, and this felt a bit contrary to that! I do think that it is highly likely that one day I will probably become vegan but if I do, I would like to make this transition in my own time and at my own pace. I chose instead to keep on trying new vegan recipes as I do anyway as part of my work, running a monthly healthy supper club! Everyone has an opinion on diet and there is no one diet that suits all! We are all individuals with our own unique constitutions, tastes and opinions on the matter! Also, not everyone prioritises their health when they make their food choices. Of course, many people choose veganism for reasons other than health, which are of course extremely

important but beyond the scope of this article. However, if you are interested in making healthier choices, I think it cannot be disputed that the healthiest diet is one that is full of whole, natural, unprocessed foods, with a diverse range of fresh fruits, vegetables and plants being a big part of that. I firmly believe that everyone can benefit from adding more plants in their diet. This includes fruits, veg, wholegrains, beans, pulses, nuts and seeds. Eating a wide variety of these foods will give you a diverse range of essential vitamins and minerals and phytonutrients (health promoting plant chemicals such as lycopene). They also provide essential fibre that is so important to the health of our digestive system and all the health promoting microflora in our gut. Vitamin C is perhaps the most obvious vitamin that we associate with vegetables, and this alone has numerous health enhancing properties. It is vital for our immune system but is also required for many other functions including stress hormone production and has essential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation and free radical damage are major contributors to ill health, so these properties cannot be understated! Let there be no doubt, fruits, veg and plants are the cornerstones of good health! Michael Pollan wrote about it a very long time ago, but his quote remains as relevant today as it has always been ‘Eat Food, ot too much, mostly plants.’ So, a vegan I am not, but heavily plant based I am, and I aim to help as many people as possible to include as many plant foods in their diet as possible. I always serve up plant-based food and recipes at my monthly supper club and at the various health and wellbeing retreats I have been fortunate to be involved in. I am also acutely aware that people have very busy lives and that it can challenging for families with young children to find healthy recipes everyone will eat. I am therefore sharing a simple yet delicious plant-based recipe that my whole family love (including my 8 & 12 year old sons.) I cannot take all the credit though. If you are ever short on inspiration you can always rely on the genius of Jamie Oliver to help you out, and this recipe is our new Jamie Oliver winter favourite.

Vegan Shepherd’s Pie Ingredients

600g potatoes 600g sweet potatoes Olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 carrots, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 sticks celery, finely chopped 1 tbsp coriander seeds ½ bunch fresh thyme, leaves picked 350g chestnut mushrooms, roughly chopped 12 sun-dried tomatoes, diced 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 100ml vegetable stock 1x 400g tin lentils 1x 400g tin chickpeas 5 sprigs fresh flat leaved parsley, leaves picked & chopped 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves picked and chopped 1 garlic clove crushed Zest of 1 lemon 30g fresh breadcrumbs

Method • Preheat oven to 200C • Peel & chop potatoes into 2cm chunks. Place white potatoes into large pan of cold water, bring to boil & simmer for 10-15 minutes until tender, adding the sweet potatoes after 5 mins • Drain & leave to steam dry then mash until smooth with olive oil & a pinch of salt & pepper • Crush the coriander in a pestle and mortar until fine, then place a medium pan with the onion, garlic, carrot, celery and thyme leaves

and cook gently in a little olive oil and water until soft (approx. 10 minutes) • Add the mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes & balsamic vinegar & 2 tbsp of oil from the sun-dried tomato jar • Cook for 10 minutes, then stir in stock, and lentils and chickpeas (juice and all), and cook for 5-10 minutes until slightly thickened and reduced • Stir in parsley leaves and season to taste & transfer to a baking dish (approx. 25cm x 30 cm) • Spread the mash over the top,

scuffing it with the back of a spoon • Mix the rosemary, garlic, lemon zest, breadcrumbs with 1 tbsp olive oil & sprinkle over the mash • Place in hot oven for 10 minutes until piping hot • Place under the grill for 2-3 minutes until golden & serve with seasonal greens

What’s going on in Leamington & Warwick and surrounding villages

mental health together support groups We are Mental Health Together, a Warwickshire based community group that is open to everybody. We all experience fluctuations in our mental health and wellbeing, yet many of us still find it hard to speak out openly about this.

In the UK around 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health condition each year. Many more of us will experience times when our mental barometer won’t be at one hundred percent; times when we are feeling anxious, insecure or just trying to cope with the many issues life throws at us. The ethos of our friendly group is to bring people in the local community “together”; hosting events and activities which encourage open conversations about mental health in a safe, supportive, stigma-free environment. We focus on the positive role of physical exercise in enhancing

mental health e.g. short local walks, and #runandtalks in partnership with England Athletics. In addition we hold craft sessions, gardening, helping with Repair Cafe and coffee chats – we are always open to new ideas too! Opportunities to relax, chat and interact are at the heart of every event and activity that we offer. It is natural to feel nervous about joining a Together activity for the first time, but please don’t worry - our volunteers have lived experience of mental health affecting their lives, and they will be there to welcome, support and enjoy the events and activities with you. Contact telephone: 01981 590604 These courses will be held around Hunningham, a quaint small village on the outskirts of Leamington Spa with plenty of fields, meadows, hedgerows and riverside to forage. We meet at the Red Lion, a welcoming pub alongside the River Leam. The course starts there with a short introduction on what to look for and a brief of the Countryside Act. Then we’ll set off on a roughly 2.5 hour walk around the village, teaching you how to identify the different plants, flowers, fruits and mushrooms that we find. We’ll stop along the way for some seasonal homemade refreshments such as our lovely hogweed and wild garlic soup, elderflower champagne or fruit leathers. Then it’s back to the pub for a tasty wild food lunch based on what we have found and some pre-prepared homemade treats. After the course we will email you a list of everything we talk about on the day to help you to remember what you have learnt. There are limited spaces available so please book your tickets online.
