Get the cleaning bug this Spring - open the windows and get to work. Here’s our Top 10 (plus 2) list of do’s and don’ts...

egular housecleaning can get rid of many allergy triggers and help relieve your symptoms. Common mistake - using heavily scented cleaners could make your allergies worse, not better. Here are some ways to keep your house clean and allergies under control: • Vacuum twice a week. Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter as some allergens are so small that they pass right through a regular vacuum filter. That means that every time you vacuum, you could be sucking them off the floor

and shooting them into the air, where you breathe them in. • Cut clutter. Piles of boxes or clothing can trap dust and hide allergens like dust mites and cockroaches. • Wear a mask when you clean and when you’re done with your housework, leave the house for a few hours. It will limit your exposure to allergens you kicked up into the air. • Keep the bathroom free of mold. Scrub tiles regularly. Don’t forget the shower curtain, too. You may be able to toss it in the washing machine. • Wash sheets weekly in hot water. Make sure it’s at least 50 degrees celsius. That’s hot enough to kill dust mites. If your child has allergies, do the same with any washable stuffed animals.

• Don’t use scented cleaners or detergents. If you have allergies, the fragrances in cleaners can trigger symptoms. Look for fragrance-free products instead. • Don’t air-dry laundry. Clothing left outside will pick up pollen and mold. Use the clothes dryer instead. • Use a damp cloth and mop when cleaning. They’ll trap allergens instead of knocking them into the air. Change bedlinen after dusting in the bedroom after two hours. • Clean outside entryways, sweep or vacuum. The cleaner your path or patio is, the less likely someone is to track dust or pollen into your house. • (A favourite of mine!). Ask another family member to take over some chores. It’s better if you avoid jobs like dusting or vacuuming if you are allergic to dust mites. • Take shoes off before you go in the house. That way pollens or other triggers won’t get tracked in. • Keep pets out of the bedroom. It’s a key way to protect yourself from dander. Don’t ever let pets sleep on the bed if you have pet allergies and of course sort out don’t overlook pet beds - give them a good seeing to regularly (and of course the dog!)

Nature Tots aims to encourage an early interest in wildlife. With this in mind, we hold activities outdoors, in the natural surroundings of our reserve at Brandon Marsh. The Collegiate Church of St Mary, Warwick 14 April 2016 – 30 June 2016

Presents a major exhibition, featuring a Shakespeare First Folio (1623) (courtesy of the V&A Museum) and a first edition of the King James Bible (1611) (courtesy of Cambridge University), providing visitors with the rare opportunity of seeing these two iconic texts, ‘twin pillars’ of Western society, on display together. There will also be a printing press on display, featuring an “Albion” press, an early, iron hand press (c.1800s) - a chance to see how books were printed in previous generations! Active and participatory engagement to inspire for young minds! Admission fees are £3.50 for Adults/£2.50 Concessions and £6.50 for a Family ticket. In tandem with the exhibition will be keynote events throughout the three-month exhibition period: theatre performances, film screenings, interactive displays, music performances, noted celebrities and scholars in conversation and performance. In May, St Mary’s will play host to the “Good Queen Bess Fest” Elizabethan Weekend, 28-30 May 2016 (Collaboration with Kenilworth Castle, Lord Leycester Hospital and Charlecote Park).
