TV COMIC LEE MACK TO HEA LEAMINGTON SPA COMEDY FE We just knew something funny was going on; and our hunch was right as Leamington’s very own comedy festival returns in October with a stellar line up. It is only a year since the festival was created so it’s still the new kid on the block, but it’s already drawing a line up that must be the envy of many of the more established comedy festivals. Mark Makin, one of the festivals co-directors told us, “we had such a great response to the first festival that we had to push it on. the festival by a few more days, add in some really big names and also increase the number of venues taking part - overall we think people will be pleased with the festival again this time round”. We think they will too as the line up includes the star of TV’s “Not Going Out” and “Would I lie to You” Lee Mack, alongside grumpy old man Arthur Smith, Radio 4’s ‘The Now Show’ star Mitch Benn, ‘Live at the Apollo’ and ‘Mock the Week’ regular Seann Walsh, “They Think it’s All Over” stalwart Lee Hurst and for younger comedy fans, BBC children’s TV megastar Justin Fletcher. Plus With shows also from Richard Herring, Terry Alderton, The Reduced Shakespeare Company, Boothby Graffoe and more besides there really should be something for
everyone. Mark says this is a deliberate ploy rather than any quirk of fate as the aim is for the festival to have as broad an appeal as it can. He told us, “We’re a pretty broad church when it comes to comedy, so for us stand up sits happily alongside children’s shows, theatre, cinema, spoken word and, well, anything really - the only proviso we put on something going into the festival is that it’s good quality and most importantly, it’s good fun”. Another change for this year’s festival is the scheduling of free events in the town and the inclusion of new venues and partners. Mark explains, “The first year was deliberately kept quite tight and small scale to allow us to see how it worked and
ADLINE ESTIVAL we think for it to have more of a festival feel this year, the events need to spill across the town a little more. We’re currently in the midst of planning a number of free events in the town centre across the opening weekend and tieing up a few loose ends with some interesting venues that’ll do just that”. The Comedy festival runs from Saturday 12th until Saturday 19th October.
