Microwaves are great for cooking, but that is why they need to be contained in shielded ovens. Mobile phones work at microwave frequencies, and although they work at much lower power, there is increasing concern in the scientific community. The Earth has a naturally occurring frequency known as the Schuman field which is 7.8Hz, which the human body has evolved to exist within, and in fact needs to be able to synchronise to for our natural circadian rhythms (the body clock) to produce various hormones. The body is essentially a bio-electrical machine and when that is interrupted, problems occur. NASA actually re-introduced this frequency into space craft to protect astronaut’s health. Lower frequency EMR from mains electricity can also interrupt this function when the electrical or magnetic fields are high enough. We are bathed daily in an ‘electrosmog’ of

wifi and cordless DECT phones this varies, but radiation, whether at mains frequency from the plethora of electrical devices around us, or at the higher frequencies of wifi and broadband, mobile phones, DECT cordless phones, ﬂuorescent strip lights and energy efficient compact light bulbs. There is regulatory guidance which is designed to protect us from the more extreme effects of EMR i.e. to make sure we don’t get cooked. However this does not protect us from the lower power levels that we are exposed to every day. Most of us are aware that living under high voltage power lines is not a good idea, and there are numerous scientific papers linking that to various cancers including childhood leukaemia. There are literally hundreds of credible scientific papers linking all levels of EMR to the common symptoms mentioned above, but more worryingly as well as leukaemia, to other forms of cancer, benign brain tumours, as well as the impact on the blood-brain barrier, leading to increased risk of developing Parkinsons, Alzheimers or multiple sclerosis. HOWEVER, it is not all gloom and doom, and this article is not aimed at scare mongering. My intention here is to increase awareness of

Mobile phone advice is going to be a lot more controversial, as they are such an integral part of daily life now. However if one reads the small print, there is safety advice including with most phones specifying they should be held typically 15-20mm away from the body when in use (i.e. not right up against your ear). Again there are many research papers linking phone use to the above conditions. For high voltage power lines it depends on the power, but typically this varies between 25m and 120m from your home. This is just a quick summary and general

guidance; in reality it will vary from home to

home. Individual surveys using professional equipment will of course provide a much more accurate picture, enabling you to make your home as safe and electrically ‘quiet’ as possible. What is neurological physiotherapy? Neurological Physiotherapy is a specialist area of physiotherapy for treatment and management of people with a disorder affecting the brain, spinal cord or nerves. Neurological physiotherapists have specialised training and experience in treating people with neurological problems and are skilled in assessing the physical and functional difficulties that are related to those problems. They have a very hands-on approach to treatment and physically move the body to help re-activate and re-align muscles in order to regain lost movement. They use exercises to improve strength and fitness or to help prevent or slow down movement loss and maintain independence for as long as possible. Their treatment is specifically targeted to stimulate the nervous system to reorganise itself in a way that restores movement and function or minimises the impact of the neurological injury on the body. Neurological physiotherapists have an in depth knowledge of how posture is maintained, how movement is generated and how a neurological disorder affects you. They also have a good understanding of how speech and cognition can be affected by neurological impairment and are skilled in adapting their treatment to take account of this. There are a few approaches to neurological physiotherapy, the most common treatment approach in the UK is the Bobath Concept.

The Bobath Concept The Bobath Concept originated from the work of Berta Bobath a physiotherapist and her husband Karel Bobath, who was a neurologist and psychiatrist after they came to England from Germany in the 1930s. Berta Bobath’s ideas showed that movement could improve on the damaged side after Stroke and that the body functioned as a whole. She found, for example, that treating the arm could improve walking and balance. The Bobath Concept is a problem solving approach to the assessment and treatment of individuals with neurological problems and is based on specialist knowledge of how the brain repairs itself, skills in functional movement analysis and specialist handling skills of the physiotherapist. It focuses on improving the quality of movement in order to maximise a

person’s ability to do day-to-day activities. It helps to teach people to move in the most efficient way possible so that they can conserve energy and move more easily. The concept views the person holistically taking account of cognitive, emotional and behavioural factors as well as the physical. Bobath therapists use specialised handling skills to facilitate normal movement patterns until independent control of the body is achieved. They adapt the treatment environment to help people achieve successful movement or reduce the physical demands of a task. They help people to access movement by becoming more aware of how they move. There are three levels of training • Introductory modules • A three week Basic Course • Week long advanced courses (which can only be taken after the basic course) Only on completion of all these levels can a physiotherapist consider themselves ‘Bobath Trained’.

Celebration of Christmas

A candlelit concert at Banbury Town Hall next month will raise money for local charities. The town’s annual Celebration of Christmas – an evening of Christmas songs, readings, carols, and other seasonal music – will include mulled wine and mince pies, and will take place under traditional Christmas decorations in the town hall’s main gallery. The event, on Saturday December 7, is organised by Banbury Town Council and tickets costing £5 are available from the town hall (weekdays 9am to 4pm). Doors open on the night at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, and the concert will last for around one hour. Town mayor Cllr Nicholas Turner said: “This is a popular preChristmas event. Emmerdale character Marlon Dingle will switch on Banbury’s Christmas Lights this year Actor Mark Charnock, who plays the soap stalwart, will be in town on Sunday November 24 to press the switch-on button, meet fans of the programme and sign autographs.

The actor,who joined the popular programme in 1996, is one of the show’s longest established characters. He has had several strong storylines over the years and is c urrently caught up in the ‘Emmerdale seige’ saga. Mark said this week: “Emmerdale is just remarkable at the moment. The Debbie, Chas, Cameron plot is one of those perfect long-burn stories for soaps. It is dramatic, sad, and funny at times. It is fantastic. The aftermath of the siege is going to be great. It will just keep going.” The switch-on will be the finale of an afternoon of stage entertainment featuring local musicians, and a Robbie Williams tribute act – all hosted by Radio Horton’s Stewart Green and Banbury Sound’s Kirsty Leahy. The stage acts will be Under The Covers, Two For One, Jodie Brooker, Jake ‘Ozzie’ Ostler, J.E.E.P – The Band, and the Robbie Williams Tribute Band who appeared on last year’s lights show and are back by popular demand. Christmas Lights Committee chairman Cllr Tina Wren said: “For many years people from Banbury and the surrounding

area have been thrilled by TV celebrities coming to town to switch on the Christmas lights. We quickly discovered that soap characters were popular with people of all ages and we try every year to get a well-known face. “This year is no exception. BlocK paVing to suit eVery property type! There is something extremely appealing and neat about a block paved garden or driveway. With such a wide range of styles, types, colours and sizes of block pavers there are also many design possibilities to suit every property type. Block paving is considered for most to be more attractive than basic, plain tarmacadam surfaces for driveways. It can be relatively inexpensive if you choose the basic rectangular blocks. One major block paving manufacturer estimates the costs as being split 20% blocks, 80% labour, hard core and sand. Basic blocks can be purchased from £8 or £10 per square metre up to over £25 per metre, so overall costs should be between £50 and £100+ per metre. However, complex patterns and additional items such as edging, steps and drainage can be added to these figures. Individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if they are damaged, or stained with oil, diesel or petrol spillages.

Because block pavers are manufactured rather than cut from natural stone, block sizes tend to be very accurate and uniform. No specialist machinery is required (as there is with tarmacadam surfaces) hence small areas should not necessarily be proportionately more expensive per square metre, as when there are high set-up costs. Concrete block paving is cost effective when compared to clay pavers or natural stone blocks such as granite setts. Block paving is suitable for both domestic and commercial applications.
