Editorial

Perseverance is the word that does not just describe our journey in bringing forth our ideas into reality for this Yearbook but illustrates the efforts of this entire institution for functioning in the hardest of times. With this reflection on our journey, which we dreamt of, the journey which we lived through and the journey which made us realise the pre-eminence of this elite institution, now comes to an end. This journey has been unconventional in many senses, which the past Editors-in-Chief would have never experienced.

The Yearbook is different from any of the School’s other publications, simply because we just get one shot at perfection, one attempt to engage with the Dosco community. In such a case, we can’t afford to have any errors or ‘jam-ups’ as we call them. This constant pressure along with the rich legacy has with every passing year raised the benchmark of creativity and efficiency as each subsequent Yearbook supersedes the previous Yearbook. In terms of the publication itself, we have continued on the path which our predecessors set out on in producing a publication which represents our School. While we may not have re-invented the Yearbook, we continued the journey of re-envisioning it.

For the two of us, the Yearbook has occupied more time and space in our school lives than any other co-curricular activity. While the final product gives us a sense of great fulfilment, the journey of putting together such a publication has provided us with some of the most memorable moments of our School life. From setting up chairs early in the cold mornings for House pictures to tidying up each Dosco’s uniform to guiding juniors in our senior forms to actually becoming the Editors-in-Chief and now writing this editorial for ‘our’ Yearbook, we would love to relive this remarkable journey.

The Yearbook has been a truly surreal learning experience. We have garnered learnings such as leadership, responsibility and humility. This annual publication is so much more than a coffee table book. It holds a place of respect in the community which comes with a heavy weight of responsibility to carry for the board members, and specifically the Editors-in-Chief. We hope to live up to the standards of our predecessors by releasing this issue for an extremely influential batch. Producing this much awaited publication after 2 years makes it an exceedingly significant one.

This reflection would be simply incomplete without talking about the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact it had on the whole community. The Year 2021, started with the optimism that the pandemic would find its near end and life will return back to normalcy after the unprecedented Year 2020. To our dismay, it really didn’t happen, as the country saw the worst of the pandemic in the summer of 2021 and the pre-pandemic life didn’t return to Chandbagh till early 2022. This issue accurately captures the charm of Chandbagh and showcases a Dosco’s tenacity, dedication, and capacity for change in the face of adversity.

By talking about the journey, reflection and evolution in this editorial, this edition’s Special Section is not just looking at a journey which gave Doscos a distinct identity but also portrays the significance of illustrations in conveying a message. We have the history and evolution of the Dosco Doodle as our Special Section for this Yearbook.

It gives us immense pleasure to present this year’s Yearbook. We are truly grateful to be in a better situation with regards to producing an issue this year, and wish to pass this legacy on to the next generation. As we accept the fact that we will soon be exiting these gates, it is reassuring to know that we have left a mark and set a standard to live up to for all those to come. It has been a pleasure.

From the Headmaster’s Desk

Another year has gone by and having to put my thoughts into words, makes me pause and think. As yet another batch is ready to step into the world outside familiar walls, I reflect on an important question: “What is it that they carry out of these walls?”

As a head of an esteemed school such as Doon, I need to ensure that the boys (and girls) carry forth the torch of knowledge, showcasing all the values that The Doon School stands strong for. Also that as your Headmaster, I have been effective in helping you grow.

The words that stand out in our mission statement are: ‘to serve a meritocratic India; ...to be just and ethical citizens; ....wise and principled leaders.’ Each one of you is a reflection of what is taught at this institution; but what is of paramount importance is whether or not you have been moulded into good human beings!

Success is something that comes and goes, what makes you stay ahead in the game of life is your passion, your focus, and the values you stand for. They make you stand out in the crowd. You are blessed to be born into families which are affluent and will ensure that you have all the comforts of life. But do not forget, you also have a responsibility; a responsibility to take your family further and beyond. It should be your endeavour to add value to your parents’ and forefathers’ hard work. Ensure that as you grow into gentlemen, your parents are recognised by your names, your names are taken with respect and love due to all your hard work and good deeds.

In these last two years at Chandbagh, I have learnt a lot from all of you and I say it with pride that you are not only influencing your peers or juniors, but you have also influenced me in ways I might not be able to express. This influence is something that has now become a part of my life. The passion and drive I see in your eyes; I haven’t seen in a long time. I am enjoying my journey with you as my co-drivers as together we shape the future of this school.

This is your last year at school and what you leave behind are stories and memories. What is spoken about you after you have gone, is how you made everybody feel, the values you lived by, the way you motivated your juniors and how you taught them to do things they were too scared to try. Ensure though, that you are remembered with fondness and not with a ‘sigh of relief’! You may not be aware but many an eye is looking at you and imbibing your way of life. Be the reason behind someone’s smile not pain. Remember all those times, when you needed kindness and did not get it and ensure that if you are around, no one else has that feeling. You are as good as your deeds - make them the best!

Pause, listen, and you will hear the echoes of your steps way after you have left. You may have walked out of the confines of these walls, but your stories stay long after you- rather forever! Ensure they are happy and heart-warming stories!

Masters’ Farewell

Dr Arvindananbha Shukla

Year Joined : 1992

A few days ago, I was reminiscing about the moment when SKV asked me to meet Dr. Shukla, the day I joined School. It was only to be discovered later, that this short acquaintance would develop into a lifelong friendship. We have trekked together for thousands of kilometres in mountains and desert, lived together in tents, bivouacked and of course faced the threats to life and limb - this has truly strengthened our bond. Our families also share a similar bond that will be missed as they move up the hill to Mussoorie. My deep heartfelt thanks to Mrs Shukla for her affable nature and the way she entertained us when we barged into their home. I wish the family good wishes and all the best of luck in their new journey.

ASH has been, by far, one of the most influential figures of my experience at Doon. Through Hockey and Hindi, not only did he teach me to think from different per spectives, but fundamentally shaped my identity in School. He was my confidante and mentor someone who relentlessly restored my confidence when things seemed dark or when my self esteem had taken a beating. His knowledge, benign patience, encouragement, discipline, and unstinting support will be sorely missed. The hours spent laughing at the lamest of puns, receiving endless gyaan and even the occasional scolding are moments I would be willing to relive a thousand times over. I know that his absence will be felt on campus and he will not be forgotten but all that I want to say is how immeasurably grateful I am that he found it worthwhile to get to know me.

ASH Sir is the Master that we as Seniors have looked up to. A presence on campus who has been involved in every single sphere of a Dosco’s life. Whether it be the unrelenting battle of hockey sticks on the Main Field or the battle of minds during a debate, his legacy has surpassed the levels one can only aspire towards once one enters School. Even with such great impact, he had a deeply respectable attribute of putting others forward. Being positioned on the side of every expedition picture one can find, or next to the Kamla Jeevan teams, hockey teams, or Prefectorial teams of the past. While being a leader, he has led the growth of hundreds of others. Watching him bid farewell makes my eyes tear up, but to have been guided by him has surely been an honour and a privilege. Thank you, Sir!

Eighteen years is a long and eventful time to be associated with someone in this School. Especially if they have been a part of your day to day life; for five years the Head of your department; a parallel Housemaster of a Holding House along with you; if they have taught your son in School; if you have seen their children be born, and grow on campus, and then become a student in your own class! That is the kind of wonderful association I have had with DEB over the years. Another important partnership with him has been in the course of the past four years - as team mates in our capacities of DHA and DHP. We worked rather well together, understanding where the other was coming from, whether we agreed or disagreed on a matter, concerned only with the best outcome for the School. DEB moves on most deservedly to pursue higher career goals, and to be with his family. I wish them all, the very best futures!

I have worked closely with DEB over the years in different capacities. Our journey together has been an interesting and exciting one. The learning curve has been steep, and I have always had a deep appreciation for DEB’s ability to remain calm and firm to his beliefs. While a lot of our discussions and interactions have been in the formal space discussing academics, we also enjoyed discussing food. On our official trips, DEB’s ability to find out interesting places with exciting dishes to eat always amazed me. DEB also has varied passions such as the arts, literature, debating, reading, music and design. Over the years his contribution to the School has added a lot of value in the various systems and processes that we have developed. His colleagues and students will surely miss his presence. As he moves on, I wish him and his family the very best for the future.

The online class is usually a platform for teachers to soliloquize at length. DEB Sir’s soliloquies were of Shakespearan proportions for both had similar effects on us: we’d be enlightened, bewitched, and bewildered. As teachers struggled to entice students into their classes, we’d place bets about whether DEB Sir would set foot in ours. And yet, each time he would, he’d saunter in (often after half the class had elapsed) with only his phone and the text of the day and leave us with enough intellectual fodder for a week. For me, Sir redefined English Literature, for he’d demonstrate how theo ry, philosophy, psychology and economics all intersected in a single text. He taught me how to think and learn and for all of this, I thank him and wish him the best for his future.

Ms Priyanka Bhattacharya If you know PKB well, you will agree that “the force is strong with this one”! A legendary teacher and an exceptional mentor, PKB as a Mas ter embodies killer content, endless compassion and unmatchable charisma. In her many outstanding years here at Doon, PKB has imprinted herself on countless stu dents and myself and I can’t even begin to imagine the gaping void she will leave in my learning as a Master here. PKB brought stability and a grounding presence and always taught us to learn from our failures and be dabbang without any sweat! Her brand of motivation is like petrichor after a warm summer day, it uplifts your mind and spirits and now when she is leaving, I can only wish her the best with new hopes and beginnings, knowing very well that Doon will still be her love and remain in her consciousness forever.

—RDG

15 years Year Joined : 2007 The delight of knowing an extraordinary person is far more than expressing my thoughts here in a few ineffectual words. In my memory of five years or so at Doon, I have known PKB Ma’am both as a robust academician and a loving mentor. Her passion for teaching the subject coupled with her insightful wisdom in a variety of matters make her an accomplished master at School. PKB’s intellectual determination as an English teacher in class, enthusiastic engagements in many forums at School and profound sentiment for every speck and fabric of this community will always be fondly remembered. In that faith, as Dickens said: “The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.”

As my teacher for the first four years and then as my supervisor on the academic front during the last two, PKB Ma’am has played a crucial role as a mentor through out my school journey. For me, PKB Ma’am has not only been a supportive teacher aspiring for the highest grade, but also a compassionate guide backing me every time I fumbled and encouraging me to hold my ground whenever it seemed right. She believed in her students’ abilities to achieve great things. Over the last few years, it was her opinion that mattered the most to me and it was her that I was anxious not to disappoint in any regard. While her departure is truly a loss, I wish her a bright future wherever she may choose to be.

Ms Jasbir Anand

JKA has been the sheet anchor of the English department for 14 years now. From her incredible board work, to her detailed work sheets, to her killer question papers, and her murderous marking schemes...she is the stuff of dreams and nightmares, depend ing on which side of the bed you got off that morning! I have shadowed her like a spook all along. I have watched her rise above all personal challenges with a grace that can only astonish. The way she mentored younger colleagues was unparalleled. But we had to be ready to hear her “chal, chal” once in a while. If we told her of our woes, she would often squeeze our hand with that death grip which only the race of Kaurs has, and say, “parnal nab?’. I know she would stand outside the MPH as boys filed in for their Board exams, with prashad in her hands, and it was a sight to see each one bend ing to touch her feet. She would also be waiting anxiously as they would file out, and the milling crowd of blue and gray anxiously confirming answers with her is a memory that will bring a lump to my throat always. What charisma, what class, what calibre! JKA, those who were smelted and cast anew in your inimitable smithy will never mind the verbal blows that sometimes accompanied the process! We were blessed to have had a Guru such as you.I wish you joy, peace, laughter, my gentle friend. Doon will miss your silver hair, and your golden heart.

Jusbir Kaur Anand spent 14 wonderful years at Doon during which she touched the lives of so many. I probably spent five years on campus with her but without a shad ow of doubt she was my favourite teacher. Since I came from a small town, I lacked confidence in English in my early years. My interest in English remained dormant till I met JKA. I was in her class in A & B form, and very vividly remember her lessons on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Her voice was so loud and clear you could hear her clearly from down the hall as she would always leave the doors open for ventilation. She was a great narrator and was able to retain almost everyone’s attention even though most of her classes used to be after lunch. Her time management was so immaculate that she would always reach the intended stopping point before the bell. In fact, she planned the entire semester so well that each semester, last week or two would be reserved for revision. This was a great lesson which I try to incorporate in my lifestyle. When A form concluded, I was fortunate to get assigned to JKA’s class for S and SC form. Those who have interacted with JKA must be familiar with her quick wit and humour. Anytime I was late to class my peers would poke fun at me by saying “Et tu Brute?” JKA was made Caesar in this context, and I would enjoy watching JKA wipe their smiles off with a clever yet lighthearted retort. As someone who attended an all-boys institution and primarily had only my mother to look up to as a woman, JKA as a woman role model exemplified the brilliance of a woman, thereby deepening my respect for all women. I found a friend who I could laugh with, a mother who helped shape my character and a teacher who sparked my interest in a subject which I once feared. Besides some great friends, an amazing platform, and fond memories, I am grateful to Doon for giving me JKA.

My association with Dr. Praveen Dwivedi started from the day I first visited Doon with my family in August, 2009. Dr. Dwivedi is one of the most approachable and helpful people I have ever come across in my life. He has not only made me very com fortable with the School system, but has also helped me to understand the intricacies of working here. His passion for academics, active involvement with students, and concern for his department are inspiring. I have had the pleasure and opportunity to work closely with Dr. Dwivedi in Sapera Basti for underprivileged children. I person ally learned a lot through this activity about how a person can make a change in the lives of others through selfless deeds. We had endless discussions on various issues, and I always banked upon his wisdom and valuable insights and he never disappoint ed me. He is a reservoir of knowledge and I have learnt more from him about our surrounding communities than from any other source. I will fondly remember him for having the ability to effectively deal with all types of situations and for treating everyone with respect and fairness. I wish him and his family the very best in their future endeavours.

Despite having heard from Seniors how exciting PVD Sir’s classes are, and yet unsure about what to expect, it has been a long and spectacular journey for us in the Ac counts classroom to have become today - as Sir likes to call us - “pillars of his heart’’. When I think about someone so central to our lives, in and outside the classroom, leaving, it feels nothing less than incredulous and unrealistic. PVD Sir has been our mentor, an ideal Dosco Master, and a constant and friendly support to all of ussomeone you would want to go to if you wanted to have a ‘real’ conversation. I think I speak for everyone when I say that Sir’s presence will truly be missed in School and that he will forever remain Chandbagh’s PVD.

PVD Sir has played an integral role in shaping me into the person that I am today. From being my tutor in Foot House in my D Form, to having the opportunity to work with him in the Motor Mechanics STA and now also being my Business Studies and Accounts teacher, he has been there for me throughout my entire School journey. Not only has he been an excellent support system in the classroom, he has guided me in all spheres of my Dosco life. He is one of the most approachable Masters that I have come across and his work ethic is something that I truly appreciate. No amount of words will be enough to thank him for all that he has done for me and the innumer able batches that he has interacted with. He has left a lasting impact on Chandbagh and I wish him all the best for all his future endeavours.

Mr Vivek Kumar

Year Joined : 2008

The first glimpse of Vivek at an offsite teachers’ workshop reminded me of the fa mous Kollywood actor Chiranjeevi. I did not know at that time that he is a fantas tic individual, much greater than the superstar. Many on campus believed that we were brothers and jovially used to say that we were separated in a Kumbh Mela in our childhood. He is always a great support to me both on the professional as well as the personal front. Just a few lines here are not enough to describe the persona of Vivek. Just like how you don’t forget the tune when a song fades out and stops playing, the priceless memories and charm of Vivek are here to stay for long. The magical journey of the last nine years will always be missed both in the department as well as in the familv. The lights have dimmed and the camera has stopped capturing at this venue but there is a lot left to be shot in other venues. I wish him the very best.

My memories of VVK Sir are centred around the informal environment he created in our Biology class. Sir provided us with invaluable support in academics, and apart from that, I will always remember how Sir would always cheerfully laugh along with our mischief in class and quite often crack a joke or two about it, lifting up the mood. VVK Sir always supported us in our endeavours outside the classroom as well and was always a very approachable figure. Thank you Sir for everything, and we will miss your presence on campus and your jokes which always made everyone laugh.

I have known and interacted with VVK Sir for the most part of my school life and I have really enjoyed these times with him. When I heard that Sir was leaving School, I was devastated. I was really looking forward to spending my remaining years in School going birding and doing some photography with him. Sir is an absolute de light and has helped everyone he has met. From keeping our cameras for us to teach ing us biology outside the class, he has done everything he could for us. Sir, I want you to know that nothing went unnoticed and we appreciate everything you did for us.

I didn’t have many interactions with MHS Sir before C form except for those occasional basketball games at the Old Courts in D form or just him greeting our form at the CDH with the most infectious smile! However, in C form, I was lucky enough to have him as my teacher. All in all, I can’t thank Sir enough for all the tips and tricks and extremely interactive lessons. You will be dearly missed by all of us, Sir, and I wish you the best for whatever the future holds for you.

I entered my first history lesson at School, and there he was standing on top of the desk with a red marker in his hand, commanding us to sit row by row. I have been in his class for 6 years, but I can proudly say I have learned more life skills than history. MHS Sir has been more a parent on campus than a teacher in a classroom. From tell ing us about his philosophy of growth of character to teaching us the “finer things in life,” MHS Sir made sure he left an everlasting impression in the minds of everyone he met. With a man who has seen all phases of life, it is my honour to say that I am truly grateful to have gotten a chance to know him.

—Pranav Lohia

In a single word or a phrase, MHS Sir can simply not be described. He is such a ver satile, knowledgeable and composed person. He is probably the coolest Master I have been a student of and worked with. Sir played multiple roles in my School life, ranging from my Housemaster to my history teacher to a coach on the field and most impor tantly, being a mentor and a friend. I was in denial and couldn’t believe that he was actually leaving School till he confirmed it himself. It would be really hard for me and many others to think about the School without MHS Sir. I can’t thank Sir enough for making such a crucial impact not just on my life but on the whole School community. I wish him all the best for his future endeavours and hope we remain in touch. Thank You Sir for everything, your presence will be truly missed by everyone in this commu nity.

It gives me a mixed feeling that Ravi Kumar is leaving us after five years of service to Doon. He is a good educator who loves his subject - Chemistry - and shared his knowledge with boys and girls in classrooms. In such a short span he established a good rapport with his students. Thank you for everything you have given to the department. We will miss you as a person for all the good humour you brought when ever we conversed. I wish you all the best!

Perhaps what makes RKM Sir truly unique extends beyond the vast expanse of knowl edge he brings to class. “Chemgiant’, as he is fondly known, has embedded within us concepts that are more than just theories and definitions. With quirky phrases that are hard to forget, Sir addressed our apprehensions in a manner that was both in stinctive and approachable and, in the process, made learning Chemistry effortless. It is often said that if you want to treat someone well, treat them like family. Sir did not treat us like family. In class, he created one.

—Agam Bhatia

Being with RKM Sir has been one of the best experiences of my life. Although mostly online, the interactions with him have been just amazing. He made Chemistry so much fun that I was driven to study Chemistry by myself. His way of teaching and putting forward his points utterly deviate from conventional teaching. His vocabu lary is something that I am sure was admired by each and every person in the class. I would like to thank him on behalf of the whole class for making Chemistry HL so much fun.

The Careers Information, Education and Guidance Departments fondly remem bers Mr. Ajay Tayade as a dedicated colleague and friend. Mr. Tayade’s vocation in career-counselling began in Pune - at the Indus School before he moved here to The Doon School. He was elated to join India’s most prestigious school as a Career Coun sellor and did, in fact, visit Dehradun even before he was due to join us. Upon arriv al, he immediately bonded with the department members. We were all privy to his excellent counselling abilities and his adventurous ardour. Within months, he came across as an emphatic individual who, in-spite of his busy schedule, earmarked time to listen to our issues and suggestions. It is during these conversations that we better understood him. Whenever we discussed any problems with him, we found him to be a patient listener and an individual who truly cared about the department and its members. As a colleague, he was disciplined, industrious and punctual and as a per son, we remember him as being friendly, sociable and energetic.I do remember him as being an excellent counsellor, who knew everything about possibly every Univer sity in the world! His guidance to the students was invaluable. He was also a person who forged excellent rapport with the students of the School- an essential require ment for working at a boarding school. With his departure from the department, the School has truly lost a good person and a cordial colleague. We wish him all the luck in his pursuits.

Johnson joined music department as a Piano and western vocal teacher in 2018. That time there was not a proper western singing culture in the school and also, we ha ven’t had a piano teacher for almost half of the year. With his immense efforts he not only revived the piano section of the music department but also added a new flavor of western classical singing and western choir. He is a great singer himself and a performing artist with bright prospective. He has done a lot of performances in the genre of music theatre, opera and also in choir format. He has been a great inspira tion for many boys who still remembers him for his punctuality, resourcefulness and helpfulness. Mr. Johnson was attached to Jaipur house and Oberoi house as a tutor. He was extremely popular in the tutor’s role as well. He inspired many boys across the forms of these houses in the field of Western Classical Music. Mr. Johnson has a great passion for world music and also has an inclination for Indian Classical music and folk music as well. Along with his deep interest in reading and learning new lan guages, he also has a love for nature and has an interest in plants and their medicinal values. He was a bright presence in the music department and still connected with us through the music we all made together and the bonding he shares with the col leagues and students. We wish him and his family a bright future ahead.

An amazing musician and teacher, JJ W Sir has always been there for me, whether it was in the Music School or outside. Sir joined School roughly around the same time I had joined School as a little D former and he has guided me through ever since.

From the Founder’s music production practices till six in the morning to the stressful nights before a music exam when we would all rush to the Music School to practise till sunrise, Sir has always been there to guide not only me but all us Dosco musicians. I thank Sir for everything he has done for music at School and for me and I wish him all the very best for his future!

—Aryan Prakash

Il W Sir has one of the biggest hearts, and has always been a pillar of support for not only me, but for the my entire Form. Sir joined School when we entered C Form, but he only became our tutor when we moved into B Form. The unique thing about our relationship with Sir is that he went on his first Mid-Terns with our form. Sir is known for his treats and I remember that he used to serve his tutorial group freshly made pancakes, which made the rest of our form jealous and led us to ask our Tutors to give us pancakes as well. Sir only became my Tutor towards the end of my A Form, but I already had quite a strong relationship with him because we were both South Indians, which gave us common ground to have conversations. I’m sure that Sir will do well wherever he goes and I wish him all the best for the future.

Clinital

Clinitial, which promotes awareness campaigns, health fairs, and other initiatives that help create a better and safer environment, works to improve the health of individuals in our society. In the past, they have organised medical clinics, entertained kids in communities, distributed food packages, and distributed masks to those in need.

Reuse Network

Reuse Network is a social service project that attempts to recycle and repurpose different types of garbage produced in schools by using innovative techniques and partnerships. The project has previously organised numerous shoe collection drives in schools, where damaged or ripped shoes were recycled and used shoes were given to those in need in places like Thakarpur Village.

Udaan

They have held street-plays to raise awareness as well as have a talk and play in a state-level platform in front of the CM.

Arthur Foot Academy

The Arthur Foot Academy aspires to unite individuals from various backgrounds who are struggling financially and give them a comprehensive education. They established a library in AFA, used recycled plastic bottles to make a “Hanging Garden,” collaborated with AIESEC to improve education, and held Nukkad Nataks to highlight hygiene importance.

I- Vote

I-vote is a project with the goal of increasing voter awareness among students. The main way they raise voter knowledge is by holding annual sessions when we ask a panel to engage with the C, B, and A forms. The current school captain at the time, a former school captain nominee, the deputy head of pastoral, a humanities department teacher, and an old boy as a guest speaker make up the panel in most cases. These discussions are intended to create a knowledgeable and responsible electorate that will be able to vote responsibly in the school captain elections.

Special Section

The Dosco Doodle has always been a quintessential part of all Saturday breakfast discussions for years and has held a place in the hearts of Doscos till long after they pass out. A creative outlet for budding cartoonists and illustrators to showcase their talents, the doodles have served as the perfect platform to provide a satirical and uncensored commentary on various events in School. Many Masters and Doscos have shared a laugh over these illustrations and caricatures (often of Masters) and the doodles have long served as an emulation of the outside world to generations of Doscos by allowing freedom of press and the liberty to express one’s opinions publicly. This kind of freedom and this absence of censorship is rarely found in similar establishments and is what makes our cartoons and publications special.

In this Special Section, we cover the evolution of the doodle and the various stages it has gone through.

the 1930s & 1940s

Withthe formation of the Weekly by Arthur Foot in 1936, the 30s and 40s saw some of the first cartoons made in School. Masters like Jack Gibson and John Martyn actively encouraged cartoonists and this was visible in the quality of the cartoons published. We can see simple and humorous caricatures and a chronicling of events that took place in School. Sketches by Masters were also present and taken in good humour by all. The cartoons were affectionately executed even when highlighting an idiosyncrasy. A caricature of Mr Gurdial Singh was a particularly famous one at this time.We get to see a very different Chandbagh through these illustrations. The cartoons reveal what school was like back in those days. These years laid down the groundwork for decades to come and are the building blocks for skilled cartoonists of the later generations. Freedom of expression and minimal regulation were important concepts in Arthur Foot’s vision for School and that is what allowed these cartoonists to flourish.

The1950s shifted away from the rudimentary illustrations to detailed caricatures of several School masters. These caricatures provided greater depth and detail and instantly connected with the viewers’ minds. They were more mature compared to the earlier more simplistic versions. This decade also saw a few notable contributors to The Weekly, such as B G Verghese, Editor of Indian Express (1982–86), The Times of India (1986–2005) and Mani Shankar Aiyar, a former Union Cabinet minister for Congress. This decade was also when Mr Rathin Mitra, an art Master, joined the School. He would encourage young cartoonists and organise cartoon competitions in search of fresh talent in the School.

the 1950s

the 1960s

Inthe 1960s, the Dosco Doodles were not a regular feature in the Weekly or any other publication. However, the publications were not strictly full of text. Accompanying cartoons with the articles written made the publications much more enjoyable. These cartoons did not use the yet to be born Dosco penguin, but they were caricatures of the students or artistic interpretations of the articles’ subjects. In 1967, The Weekly started to feature doodles regularly in their publication, which was met well by the students of The Doon School. The cartoons focused on the current affairs of Chandbagh at that time. Some articles contained educational doodles that attracted Dosco’s attention first and then there was a better chance for the article to be read, too!

Offto a good start, the Dosco Doodles were getting more popular by the day. With its substantial influence, many publications started featuring these doodles in their editions. Over this decade, Dosco Doodles were given great importance in The Weekly with every edition having a cartoon about either an event in school or a take on controversial matters. Around this time, there was also a ‘Puzzles Section’ in The Weekly, where students could solve Sudokus and crosswords. For this section as well, doodles were kept to make the section stand out and capture the attention of the students.

the 1970s

the 1980s

The 1980s had a great impact on the history of The Doon School. The 1980s saw the first Dosco Penguin. Made by Mohit Jayal, the penguin is now a representation of the ubiquitous Dosco and is featured in various publications and even on certain merchandise of the School. It contributes greatly to the ethos and character of Chandbagh. The 15th of September 1984 was the first time the iconic Dosco penguin was featured in The Doon School Weekly under its own section. Now, for around 40 years, Dosco cartoons have been featured in every edition of the weekly. Through the tough times in School, the penguin has always been there to lighten up the weekend. Every Saturday breakfast is highlighted with the quirky innuendos and cleverly crafted cartoons that put a smile on every face in the CDH. The cartoons in this decade were comprehensive and of great detail, portraying the general difficulties in the life of a Dosco in a humorous way, while also mocking a few instances of the past week from time to time.

I had the good fortune of being in the same house / class as Sarit Chopra, a Dosco Doodle illustrator during my time at school. Sarit, and his many caricatures of us ‘Penguins’ (Doscos), always up to some antics against ‘Grolly’ (Mr. Ramchandani), ‘Bond’ (Mr. Vohra), Gangoo, Omi and so many others were the cause of much delight and easily the first thing we were all drawn to in The Weekly. If one had to capture the spirit of The Doon School, one needn’t have looked further than the Dosco Doodle. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.

TheDosco penguins’ reign! After the designing of the iconic penguin in the 80s, we see the implementation of them in the cartoons in the 1990s. The doodles were still mostly based on caricatures, but the revolution of the penguin had begun! As India was going through a series of conflicts, the boys presented that in their own way with the use of topical doodles. The 90s saw a range of satirical jokes among the boys of Chandbagh, along with thinly veiled commentaries about ‘Socials’ held with the Wellham girls. In true Dosco nature, this was a way to create a healthy banter among the students. This period was a rich and creative time for doodles, with innovative new ideas, and witty comments. The more “old school” caricatures were changing, and the contemporary cartoons were evolving.

the 1990s

the 2000s

The world was entering the 2000s - a brand new century.Development around the globe sped up as the years went by, and the case of Chandbagh was no different. Cartoons in School have always been a portrayal of events and concepts that people do not generally discuss openly. They have always been a depiction of witty anecdotes of Masters and students, exciting events, and a lot is said between the ink strokes. The first decade of the new century was the time the penguin took full flight, featuring in the Weekly and Yearbooks like never before. Aman Dubey and Tapojoy Mandal created memorable works during this decade. These little penguins were a treat hidden among the text loaded pages. The cartoonists’ pen frequently included the Headmaster, several Housemasters, CDH food and the latest rules. Cartoons were also featured regularly in Weekly opinion polls.

Aftera short lull in the number and frequency of cartoons and doodles in the Weekly, the 2010s started this culture again with a bang. This decade saw some of the more contemporary and modern cartoons that accurately depicts School pre covid. The cartoons cover everything from School traditions to new developments such as the introduction of the IB curriculum. The Dosco doodle was ever evolving and ever popular. The Dosco sports shirts, in grey and white, were also designed during this time with the Dosco penguin in two colours on the left side of the chest in front and the word DOSCO written on the back. These exist till date.

the 2010s

“It is with little doubt that the Dosco Doodle was the main attraction of The Weekly, and almost always what Chandbagh discussed after the much-awaited Saturday breakfast. During my time on The Weekly, I saw it being used as a creative outlet to comment and bring attention to themes by (often) anonymizing individuals, hence allowing uncensored views to be seen. Due to this, the Doodles could always be counted on to be a true record of what Chandbagh was feeling at the time. It was a great tool to condense important school events and issues into concise comics that were read by all. Definitely one of the most impactful features of The Weekly, the doodles are something that I enjoyed working on the most.”

the 2020s

Inthe wake of the covid-19 pandemic, institutions worldwide moved their operations to the virtual medium, as they were forced to shut down due to lockdowns imposed to curb the spread of the virus. When the School closed in March 2020, the Weeklies started to get published online and subsequently, the Dosco cartoonists adapted to this unprecedented situation with creativity and new ideas. The setting of the doodles changed from Chandbagh to laptop screens and virtual platforms. The topic of the doodles transformed from events in School to funny things happening during online classes and exams. The fascinating part about the transformation of doodles in their online form was that now they were coloured which gave the Dosco doodles a completely digitised new look. This new avatar of Dosco doodles, not only represented the innovative spirit of Doscos but also became a symbol of our perseverance and the determination to face challenges. While the covid-19 pandemic has shown us that there is nothing certain and permanent in the world, the Dosco doodle continues to assure us that it will keep on evolving with time, as the future unravels.
