Plans for cultural hub in Weston Village applauded DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com

comment

Judging by the applause of approximately 100 people at a Weston public meeting, the community is supportive of a development that will bring a cultural hub, affordable artist housing and a refreshed public realm to the neighbourhood along with a new apartment building. The development would be located on John Street at Weston Road on what is currently a Toronto Parking Authority (TPA) parking lot and some neighbouring properties. York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata, who has championed the proposal, hosted the community meeting at the York West Active Living Centre Wednesday, April 8 to update the community on the proposal. The earliest construction could begin is in the summer of 2016 and it would be completed within two years of starting. Nunziata said the proposal is big news for Weston and something she hopes will spur on new development in the area, a community that hasn’t seen much private investment for many years. At the heart of the proposal is a new community cultural hub that features 8,600 square feet of creative programming space on the ground floor of an existing, but underutilized high-rise building at hill and apparently it used to look 33 King St. quite lovely.” She believes this project will There will also be 26 affordable live/work housing units for artist-led help improve the aesthetics of the families built at the same site and a neighbourhood. 12,400-square-foot outdoor area for Another Weston resident, Todd community gatherings, Southren, agreed, saying including the popular he liked what he saw in Be a part of the Saturday morning farmthe proposal. discussion. think it’s a good thing for Weston, but we still have to watch it.” She worries about the height of the proposed building, saying 30 floors is very tall. She wasn’t the only person with this concern. A number of people at the meeting voiced their concerns over the height of the proposed building. City planner Jennifer Keesmaat told the audience the development dollars from the apartment building are making the cultural hub a possibility. Additionally, the building will need to adhere to the city’s tall building standards. A narrow tower, which this building will feature, creates a skinny shadow that moves quickly over

the neighbourhood. The tower will be set back within a podium that is four storeys on the John Street side and seven storeys on the other. A podium helps create a public space that isn’t overwhelmed by a tall structure, and helps diffuse wind tunnels that are normally created by towers without podiums. Additionally, an increase in population will help improve the neighbourhood’s economic vibrancy, Keesmaat said. There are currently apartment buildings in Weston that stand 20-plus floors. “Weston is extremely lucky as a community. I know you’ve worked very hard with Metrolinx in order

THE PLAN The Artscape-operated cultural hub at 33 King St. will have three components: w 8,600 square feet of creative programming space w 26 affordable live/work housing units for artists and their families w a 12,400-square-foot outdoor area to serve as a community gathering place, hosting Weston Farmers’ Market and other community uses/events At 22 John St., there will be a 300,000-square-foot market rental apartment building, stepping from four to 30 storeys, with approximately 350 units.

to massage the proposals that have been coming forward in order to ensure that they are going to enhance the community,” Keesmaat said during her presentation. She said the transit investments in this community have led to a number of initiatives by the city as well, amongst which is the creation of the cultural hub. The GO station will be relocated to south of Lawrence Avenue, which will create a surplus of the TPA parking lot on John Street, where the development would be located. The new station will be better accessible and more pedestrian friendly. The new UP Express, linking downtown to Pearson International Airport, will also stop at the station and Via Rail Canada has announced it will stop at the Weston station. She said recent transit investments will better connect Weston to the rest of the city, which she said sometimes feels isolated. There’s an opportunity to leverage the transit investments to help revitalize the community, which the city is doing with the cultural hub among other efforts.

olunteer recognition: it’s important, but doesn’t need to be expensive. As we’re in the midst of National Volunteer Week, many organizations across the country that rely on volunteer efforts are busy acknowledging those efforts. And for good reason. According to Statistics Canada, 12.7 million Canadians volunteered for nearly two billion hours in 2013. That’s a lot of work being put into making our communities stronger. Though it may seem counterintuitive – as volunteering tends to be a selfless act – recognition is nevertheless important. According to Volunteer Canada, studies show that volunteer retention rates are linked to recognition. So what are organizations and causes to do? Resources are limited. Yet the time and expertise of volunteers are critical cogs to getting jobs done. One recent study, published by Volunteer Canada, suggests there’s reason for optiour view mism. The study entailed a pair of online surveys – one for volunteers Recognition and another for non-profit organiThere were 379 responses. of service zations. According to the organizaa win-win tion’s 2013 National Volunteer Recognition Study, the ways people want to be recognized tend to be the most cost-effective ones, such as “being thanked on an ongoing, informal basis.” Least-preferred methods included items like banquets and formal gatherings. “Few volunteers want to be thanked in public ways,” states the Key Findings section. “But they do want to know the impact of their contribution.” So here’s a challenge: if you’re an organization, take this week as an opportunity to review your recognition practices and get to know your volunteers a little better. Engaging your volunteer base may spark conversations and ideas that can be of mutual benefit. If you’re a volunteer, don’t be afraid to ask how your efforts are making a difference. Finally, if you’re not already a volunteer in some capacity, consider becoming one. The average contribution in Canada ranges from two to four hours per week, according to Statistics Canada. It may not be about the recognition, but the benefits of meeting people, learning a skill and contributing to your community (a key point in the Volunteer Canada survey). If you’re looking for ideas, Volunteer Toronto lists several opportunities on its website: www.volunteertoronto.ca

Hockey draft lottery is McMust-see viewing

W

hile 16 NHL teams battle it out for the Stanley Cup, the consolation trophy for the 14 clubs that didn’t qualify is nothing to sneeze at: the chance of getting the No. 1 draft pick overall, expected to be junior phenom Connor McDavid. The Newmarket native plays for the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters and is considered to be a budding superstar in waiting, the kind of player a team can build a franchise around. A league, too, for that matter. You can’t take your eyes off McDavid when he’s on the ice. He helped lead Canada to victory at the world junior tournament this year and that was after recovering from a broken hand and not having played for more than a month. He didn’t skip a beat after the tourney either, putting together another big season at Erie. He’s the

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY current points leader in the OHL payoffs including a dazzling five-goal game last week against the mighty London Knights. Small wonder he’s being spoken of in the same breath as the likes of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby and the New York Islanders’ John Tavares, two standouts who were under the same glare as youngsters and for whom the same big things in the NHL were also predicted. While the actual draft isn’t until the end of June after the Stanley Cup has been handed out, the much anticipated draft lottery, which will determine the picking order, will be aired just prior to Saturday night’s Penguins/Rangers game. Each of the 14 non-playoff teams is eligible to win

the lottery. Their chances are weighted in reverse order of their position in the standings. The percentages range from 20 per cent for the last place club, Buffalo, to one per cent for Boston, the team 14th from the bottom. Toronto, fourth from the cellar, has a 9.5 per cent possibility. Everybody keeps asking me who I think will end up with McDavid, but given that it’s a lottery, I don’t have a clue. However, I think I can guess what the newspaper headlines will be the next day in the 14 cities hoping to get him. First up, the probable headlines in the losing markets: 14. The McDream Is Over 13. We Just Can’t Catch A McBreak 12. There’s No McJustice 11. As If We Didn’t See That McComing 10. Big McSurpise. McSame Old, McSame Old 9. Oh Well. Nothing

McVentured, Nothing McGained 8. There’s Aways McNext Year 7. C’est La McVie 6. You Can’t McWin ’em All, As They McSay 5. That’s McShowbiz 4. Ah, McRats 3. McSigh. So McNear And Yet So McFar 2. McClose, But No McCigar Lastly, the most likely headline in the city of the team who gets the top pick: 1. How McSweet it is And the icing on the McCake? That’s draft day, when NHL commissioner Gary Bettman asks the team with first overall for its choice. No doubt the lucky GM will beam into the microphone: “Number 97, please, with everything, for here.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Goodwill partners with Red Propeller to recycle VHS tapes DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com A Mount Dennis social enterprise that intends to turn a profit while helping solve a waste problem has gained a partner to help ensure its work can spread far and wide. Project Get Reel, which announced its business name as Red Propeller at a launch event last Thursday, has partnered with Goodwill. Red Propeller, based at the Learning Enrichment Foundation on Industry Street, intends to recycle VHS tapes in an environmentally friendly way. The company said as much as 80 per cent of VHS material is recyclable, but there is no mechanical way to separate the recyclable and non-recyclable materials. It requires labour.

Red Propeller employees will dismantle the tapes, granulate them on site into pellets, and ship the pellets to buyers, said co-founder Philip Yan. In Goodwill, the company has found a partner who will provide Red Propeller with tons of tapes – literally. “We do sell what we can, but we estimate almost 100,000 pounds of VHS tapes still end up as part of our own trash at Goodwill,” said Derek Gamelin, senior director of donations and donor relations at Goodwill Industries of Toronto, Eastern, Central and Northern Ontario (Goodwill TECNO), which operates 26 stores. He said Goodwill sells approximately 84 per cent of all donations it takes in, with the remainder ending up in

landfills. VHS tapes contribute to a large portion of that waste. “We’re striving to get to 85, 86, 87 per cent. Providing raw materials to Project Get Reel will help us do that,” Gamelin said. Goodwill will continue selling tapes, but there are many that do not get sold. “All the Bar Mitzvah tapes, wedding tapes, prom tapes that you have that really have no use, and nobody else is going to buy, will end up coming back to Project Get Reel,” Gamelin said. Red Propeller intends to begin operating in June with approximately four employees. Its site has a capacity for 10 staff.

The second half of the show, called Letters to Spain, is an all-flamenco, mixed repertoire showcasing the range and inseparable components of music, song and dance that flamenco offers, the EESDC said. León, who lives in the Jane Street and Eglinton Avenue area, came to Canada in 1999 and has been playing with the EESDC for about five years. He has performed alongside well-known musicians and gone on world tours, including with Canada’s Jesse Cook and the Sultans of String. He teaches Cuban, African, flamenco, Caribbean and Brazilian music styles at Humber College’s School of Creative and Performing Arts at the Lakeshore campus. Letters to Spain will feature three shows. The Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and the Sunday show starts at 3 p.m. The Saturday evening show will feature a talk with the artists. The ensemble is stripped down and minimalist, León said. “But, it’s intricate when it comes to harmonies and melodies created by these two guitarists,” León said. “This small ensemble will create very rich tones and melodies. The music is as authentic as it can get in Spain. It gives people a chance to hear beautiful music that is authentic and original.” León will play alongside guitarists Nicolás Hernández and Benjamin Barrile, violinist Chris Church, and singers Tamar Ilana and Fernando Gallego Torres. The first half of the program, Poeta, celebrates and explores the life, loves, exile and return of iconic Spanish poet Rafael Alberti. The dance company had presented the work in 1999, set to the music of composer Vicente Amigo. Now, the performance is re-imagined with a new understanding of the poet’s troubles. Toronto’s bigger green bins tougher for raccoons to open DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com The ubiquitous green bin is getting bigger, stronger and tougher for raccoon paws to open, if Toronto Council goes along with recommendations from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. But the approval of the $31-million contract with Rehrig Pacific Co. Ltd. could also make it tougher for arthritic hands to open the bins that will be holding wet waste, according to Scarborough East Councillor Ron Moeser. “On cold days when you go to turn that handle it’s going to get a little stiffer,” said Moeser, who also expressed skepticism that the larger bins would be a tough fit in crowded downtown neighbourhoods. Other councillors worried that the new bin would simply not survive the winter, and suspected it would fail at its primary expected benefit: that

 http://bit.ly/1OwNhgF it will be virtually impossible for raccoons to enter. “We’ve had an animal behaviour expert and we’ve had our focus groups,” said committee chair Jaye Robinson. That expert, York University biology and psychology professor Suzanne MacDonald, confirmed she had tested the device outside her home for seven nights; no matter what the raccoon population threw at it, the bin wouldn’t open. The bin’s design offers a distinct advantage over the smaller raccoon-friendly bins that Torontonians currently use to toss their wet waste. “It’s bigger, you can immediately notice it’s bigger,” said MacDonald.

“That’s a big deal, because the small bins they can throw around and as soon as they can throw them around they can put them on their side and get in. This one is bigger, it’s bottom heavy, it’s hard to knock over. And the lid, there’s no place for tiny fingers to get a grip.” The bins will be problematic in about 2,000 households, according to city staff, but those households will be the last ones to be given the new bins, which will be mandatory. The current bins, in addition to being vulnerable to raccoons, are heavy and can cause injury to city workers. The new bins can be lifted with a mechanical arm, and their locking mechanism operates using a gravity latch so that they can fall open when overturned above a garbage truck. Council will deal with the contract at its May meeting.

opinion to ride transit for a week wpoliticians TTCriders has launched another transit awareness campaign, this time challenging Toronto MPPs to take a ride on the Better Way. So far, only Peter Tabuns and Cheri DiNovo of the NDP and Arthur Potts of the Liberals have taken up the advocacy group’s challenge to commute to and from Queen’s Park for a week solely by TTC to see how cramped conditions are for riders. You can find out how the elected officials fared by visiting www.ttcriders.ca TTCriders is also planning to canvas TTC stations and stops on Monday, April 27 to call for better provincial funding for the transit commission. TO SHUT DOWN WESTON OFFICE wMETROLINX

With infrastructure work along the Georgetown South Corridor winding down, Metrolinx will close its community office in Weston at the end of the week.

rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT The office at 44 King St. is one of three Metrolinx opened to deal with community concerns related to construction upgrades along the rail corridor, most of which needed to be done before the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link begins running. Completed projects for Weston included a new tunnel and bridge. As well, the John Street pedestrian bridge is scheduled to open in the summer. The office officially closes Friday. SUBWAY LOOP OFFER WI-FI w‘U’STATIONS

You can now connect to the TTC’s subway Wi-Fi system at every downtown subway station. The transit commission announced last week all 15 stations in the downtown core – comprising the “U” subway loop, as well as Bay and Spadina stations on the Bloor-Danforth line

– now offer access to the TCONNECT service which can be logged on to from the subway platform or station concourse. It will still be a couple of years or so before the entire subway network is hooked up, and there’s no timeline as of yet for getting the service onto the subway cars. GO TRANSIT TO TAG BICYCLES wABANDONED

If you left a bicycle – or even part of one – at a GO Transit station rack over the long term, beware: the regional transit provider is planning to tag and remove it. As part of its spring cleaning drive, GO staff will affix orange tags to the bicycles or the parts of bicycles deemed abandoned. If your ride was tagged improperly, all you have to do is remove the tag and resume riding. GO is planning to remove any tagged bikes by the first week of May. Two options for Gardiner’s future Ah, what a relief! Councillor Jaye Robinson and Mayor John Tory – and with any luck a voting majority of Toronto Council – are going to end the debate over the Gariner Expressway’s future once and for all, and will do so by the summer. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime decision and we need to make sure we get it right,” said Robinson, in her capacity as chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee. Robinson said that at a news conference on Tuesday, made necessary by a bit of reporting by Oliver Moore at The Globe and Mail, about certain leaked details of an environmental assessment report looking at options for the crumbling elevated expressway. By now (as you read this) the report will be out and the first public consultation on its contacts will have occurred. But as I write this, I have only Moore’s word on its content: Robinson and city staff would not confirm the most likely option, a hybrid that reroutes part of the express-

david nickle the city way at ground level, would cost about $900 million. That’s a lot of money, but it would provide a lot of benefit to a lot of people: first and foremost, the developers at First Gulf who are planning a massive redevelopment of the Unilever site. The development would create thousands of jobs, and generate millions of dollars in revenue to be put toward Tory’s SmartTrack plan – the surface rail project that would run right through the First Gulf project. Given that, council really only has two choices on its plate: either tear down the whole highway as earlier suggested, or go with this hybrid model. This will not only help with vehicular congestion, but political congestion, too. For more than a decade, the future of the Gardiner has been a political pinch point for the left and right on council. The

left has, broadly, favoured the simple removal of the elevated highway. That option dovetails with views that it would open up the city’s waterfront to pedestrians. The broadly defined right on council, meanwhile, has put considerable political energy into maintaining the thing on the largely correct theory that right-of-centre voters from the suburbs feel the expressway there is a kind of entitlement, even as every spring and summer it flings pieces of itself onto the hoods of cars travelling below it. These and other engineering conundrums surrounding the Gardiner have been subsumed in an existential fight between left and right on council for the course of the debate. The future of the Gardiner has always been something that could wait. But not anymore. The injection of First Gulf might be what it takes to break the standoff. Here’s hoping.

Corso Italia is a Toronto Business Improvement Area (BIA) spanning St. Clair Avenue West, and steeped in Italian culture. It’s also home to some of the finest espresso outside of Italy. The bustling business district, which stretches along St. Clair from Westmount to Lansdowne, is lined with restaurants, cafes and retail boutiques, where you can find premium espresso to be enjoyed on its own, or as the base of a luscious latte or frothy cappuccino. They are also your local source for at-home professional espresso machines to make the same caliber of coffee you’d find in Italy. Their secret to a perfect espresso shot? A good quality machine. There are many great espresso machines that you can purchase for home-use, including ones that are used throughout the cafes in Italy. One of Corso Italia’s best baristas in the business, Pasquale from Tricolore Bar Café shares what makes the perfect espresso. 1. Source the perfect blend.

Espresso can only be as good as the beans it comes from. That’s why it’s important to choose a high-quality product imported directly from Italy. 2. Look to the weather for a fine grind. Determining a coffee’s grind size depends on many factors, including the weather. Coffee beans contain oils that can change a grind’s consistency based on the weather. As such, the grind should be coarser in hot and humid environments, and finer in cooler temperatures. 3. Keep your espresso machine clean. No matter the quality of beans you’re using, or how skilled the barista is at pulling shots, coffee residue can impart bitterness and other off-flavours that will ruin an otherwise delicious cup. 4. A palate for great-tasting coffee. Much like how sommeliers know wine, baristas know coffee. They have the sensory awareness to prepare premium coffee with the right amount of body and fla-

vour, and without bitterness. If they do sense off flavours, they can fine-tune their brewing equipment to ensure an espresso shot that is expertly extracted. They can also adjust their technique for quality crema and the right texture steamed milk to form luscious lattes and cappuccinos. 5. Smooth service under pressure. A morning coffee rush and the need to fulfill large coffee orders barely phase our baristas. Flawless service, with espresso to match, relies on a steady hand and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, while still performing impressive latte art and engaging with customers. 6. Personalized attention and detail. A good barista knows what their regulars drink from the moment they walk in the door, lending to the VIP customer care that characterizes Corso Italia. Come for a coffee, and stay for the warmth, hospitality and vibrancy of our neighbourhood.
