Reunion festivities slated for Oct. 13-15 weekend
| York Guardian | Thursday, October 12, 2017
Weston Collegiate celebrates milestone anniversary CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com
Justin Greaves/Metroland
Jane Ross, treasurer of Weston CI Alumni Foundation, (left) and her daughter Lesley Bannard are preparing a celebration for Weston Collegiate Institute’s upcoming 160th anniversary, which will take place over the Oct. 1315 weekend. rivals from East York at 2 p.m. on the WCI field, 100 Pine St. The festivities will continue on Saturday, Oct. 14 with a WCI staff brunch at 11 a.m., followed by an alumni tea (from 1 to 3 p.m.) and pub reunion (1 to 5 p.m.) at the school. The reunion weekend wraps up on Sunday, Oct. 15 with an alumni hockey game at Weston Lions Arena, 2125 Lawrence Ave. W., at 12:45 p.m. Ross said organizers are expecting upwards of 400 WCI alumni to this year’s reunion, which is open to all. As vice-president of the Class of 1952’s student council, 84-year-old Orlando Martini said he’s looking forward to catching up with old WCI classmates he hasn’t seen in more than half a century. "Seeing old school mates that were around in my era is going to be the highlight for me," said
Martini, the founding president of the Weston Collegiate Alumni Foundation. "There’s one young lady coming in from Gatineau who was a year ahead of me at school - and I haven’t seen her for over 50 years." Back in his day, Martini said Weston boasted a number of different programs - an academic stream for students who planned to go on to university, a commercial program "for the young ladies who wanted to become a secretary," and a vocational department where they taught such programs as motor mechanics, machine shop, electrical, plumbing and other trades. "We were a composite school, so we attracted a great number of students from other areas that had to be bused in," he said. Dana (Dobson) Winder was one of those students. The Class of 1953 grad used to bus in from her
family’s dairy in Nobleton to take typing, short-hand, bookkeeping and math courses under WCI’s commercial program. While she’s already part of an alumni ladies group that meets up at a yearly luncheon, she said she’s hoping to reunite with other former classmates she hasn’t seen in years at WCI’s 160th festivities. "I’m hoping it’s a good turnout," she said. "It really is a great school. I loved going there." As president of Weston CI’s alumni foundation, Bannard hopes more classmates from her more recent graduating class will also see fit to attend the reunion. "I’m really hoping that my generation comes back for our 10-year reunion. All the grads from the ’50s to ’70s are more than happy to walk back in the doors, and we’re starting to see more of the ’80s and ’90s grads,
too - but we really want the 2000s students to get involved," she said. "This school community is phenomenal and we want to
celebrate that." For more information about WCI’s 160th anniversary reunion, go to www.alumni.westonci.ca

Jane Ross and Lesley Bannard walk down the Hall of Memories at Weston Collegiate Institute, pondering over the decadeby-decade photo displays that document their alma mater’s rich history. Around the corner from the black-and-white renderings of Weston’s 1913 school building, photo collages showcasing a vibrant school community fill the entire hallway - football teams and military bands from the ’50s; cheerleaders, glee clubs and prom pictures from the ’20s and ’30s; and a tribute to Weston veterans who fought in the Second World War from the ’40s. While Bannard slows to point out her pink-clad figure amongst a W-shaped sea of students in a 2007 school portrait, Ross reminisces over lifelong friendships with classmates pictured amongst the images from the ’70s. Both Weston grads, the mother-daughter duo play active roles in the Weston Collegiate Alumni Foundation that is currently planning a 160th anniversary reunion for the circa-1857 high school - the second oldest in Toronto, after Jarvis Collegiate. "We’re even older than Canada," laughed Ross, a WCI Class of ’76 alumnus and treasurer of the alumni foundation. "Our first reunion (in this school building) was for our 125th anniversary, then we had one for the 140th and we’ve had them every five years since." For this year’s 160th anniversary reunion - which will take place Oct. 13 to 15 organizers have arranged a full weekend of activities, starting with a Friday afternoon football game that will see the Weston Ironmen take on their longtime

ABOUT US
No time for red tape on housing Earlier this year, Statistics Canada released data from the 2016 census that indicated a long predicted, but nonetheless startling change had occurred in our country’s demographics. "From 2011 to 2016, Canada registered the largest increase in the proportion of seniors since Confederation. This acceleration of population aging is the result of the first baby boomers reaching the age of 65," StatsCan reported. "For the first time, the share of seniors (16.9 per cent) the share they represent of the total Canadian population exceeded the share of children (16.6 per cent). The increase in the proportion of seniors from 2011 to 2016 was the largest observed since 1871 - a clear sign that Canada’s population is aging at a faster pace." In our news feature Senior Tsunami on insidetoronto.com, Metroland Media looked at this change and its implications on housing for the average senior. We defined average as the range from having no additional income from a company pension or RRSPs (surviving solely on CPP and OAS benefits), to having a retirement pension or savings. In short, we focused on housing solutions for the middle-class senior; the one who can’t afford the average monthly cost of $3,526 for an Ontario retirement home (in the GTA, it is more than $4,700), but does not qualify for government-assisted housing. We also used a projection by the province’s ministry of finance that shows the senior population in much of central Ontario will more than double in the next 25 years. The results were frightening. Although we have watched the baby boomers ascend the population triangle year after year, we are ill-prepared to provide housing alternatives to match their income level. Several in-depth reports by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation have forewarned of the impending crisis, but little in the form of solutions have taken shape. The province has been silent. In fact, we believe we are in a too-little, too-late situation for the Ontario government to show leadership on the issue of senior housing. We no longer have the luxury of time to meander the red tape of government. What we need are community-based, grassroots solutions. Ontario could offer surplus land or closed schools for senior housing developments. Municipalities, regional councils and provincial programs must collaborate to eliminate barriers, such as zoning and building bylaws, to pave the way for these alternatives. We need to work together to resolve this crisis. And with Food Banks Canada saying 45,000 seniors across the country rely on food banks each month, we need to start today.

It may be a long time before we’re over amalgamation It has been a long time since amalgamated Toronto’s first day - nearly 20 years - and there are no doubts some who think it’s time we got over it. Pity those poor forward-thinking cynics. Last week at Toronto council’s October meeting, Janet Davis rose to remind us that ... well ... that perhaps we need reminding. The Beaches-East York councillor was sponsoring a request from the East York Historical Society and the East York Foundation to please include the East York logo on any street signs that might be replaced. Of all the former municipalities, Davis reminded her colleagues, East York was "special."
DAVID NICKLE The City There was a lot of heckling from councillors who noted properly that their former municipalities were special too. But Davis has a point. East York, it could be argued, was at once the least and the greatest of the former Metropolitan Toronto municipalities. It was geographically small; small enough that it couldn’t support even a

single enclosed shopping mall, small enough that it didn’t even get to be a city it was a borough. But as signs at its irregular borders indicated, it was "Canada’s Only Borough." Its citizens were fiercely proud of it. When it came time to vote in illegal, Catalan-style referenda about amalgamation, East Yorkers voted ’no’ in greater numbers, and if anyone had been measuring it, surely greater volume. When it failed, the borough’s mayor, Michael Prue, went on to be a councillor on Mayor Mel Lastman’s first Toronto Council. And he wore East York sweaters, hand-knitted by his wife. The tradition continues, Davis told her col-
leagues. Skateboarders come at night to paint the East York logo on local skateboard parks. Teenagers, she insists, have the ’EY’ acronym tattooed on their flesh. The former borough’s senior citizens long for the sight of the old EY. Spending about $1,000 a year to put EY on street signs as they’re being replaced was the least that council could do. As it turns out, no. Council finally settled on something much larger, and overwhelmingly supported a motion from Toronto-Danforth Councillor Mary Fragedakis to blow the bank and stick up signs across all six former municipalities. Clearly, we are not over it at all.

Above, Latina Ladies Wear owner John Ferrari is concerned that the fencing outside his shop, placed there for Eglinton Crosstown LRT construction, will negatively impact businesses in the area. Below, fencing erected for Crosstown construction obscures a number of businesses from view at Eglinton and Mt. Pleasant Road. Justin Skinner/Metroland
"Businesses are losing momentum. They work hard to stay in business with the construction and then (owners) come to their place and they’re just looking at a green fence in front of their store.” York Eglinton BIA chair Nick Alampi Many of the proposals will require buy-in from the city, Metrolinx and other parties, making the passing of the motion at council a mere first step. Nick Alampi, chair of the York Eglinton BIA, said the measures are welcome but noted there is no simple cure for many businesses in the area. Hoarding and fencing along many segments of Eglinton block many storefronts from
view, making walk-up business less likely even as parking has become harder to come by. "We’re beginning to lose any form of visual advertisement," he said. "Businesses are losing momentum. They work hard to stay in business with the construction and then (owners) come to their place and they’re just looking at a green fence in front of their store."
Alampi added that fencing and hoarding have also led to narrower sidewalks along long stretches of Eglinton. "You’ve got an area where you can’t see 25 or 30 businesses because of the fencing and there’s just a two and half foot pathway in front of them," he said. He recalled one new business owner opening up shop one day and arriving the next to find
scaffolding erected right in front of his business. "It’s disheartening what’s happening right now," he said. "There’s no way of figuring out how to drive business to the area." John Ferrari, owner of Latina Ladies Wear at 1608 Eglinton Ave. W. said construction has led to the removal of a nearby traffic light in addition to the issues caused by hoarding and fencing in front of his store. "A lot of customers can’t access us - a lot of elderly customers can’t get through here and when they took the traffic light out, they stopped coming," he said. The area where his store is located has been particularly hard hit as it is near the Crosstown line’s Oakwood stop. Transit stops necessarily require more work than simply laying down track, and businesses near where stops are being built are disproportionately affected. Because of that fact, Colle’s motion calls for greater incentives for those businesses. While there is some street parking nearby, Ferrari said workers working on the Crosstown line often fill those spots when they arrive for their shifts first thing in the morning. With so many factors working against him and other business owners in the area, he said business has been "almost zero" over the past few weeks. "Right now, I don’t know how much longer I can keep going," he said. "We need access, we need parking, and we need to reduce this hoarding." He was happy to hear of Colle’s plan to drive business to the area, but feels much more needs to be done to save stores along Eglinton. "I’m sure anything will help, but will this be enough?" he asked. While Colle is hopeful, he acknowledges that some of his recommendations may not be followed. "There are a bunch of asks of Metrolinx regarding financial aspects and they may say no to some, they may say yes to some," he said. The motion calls for the city manager to report back to council in December in hopes that the recommendations can be implemented quickly.

he Eglinton Crosstown LRT promises to make the length of Eglinton Avenue more accessible to transit users, but as construction on the line continues, many businesses along the strip worry whether they’ll be around to witness the benefits. In response to store owners’ concerns, Ward 15 councillor and TTC chair Josh Colle put forth a motion that aims to help beleaguered store owners. The motion, passed at council on Tuesday, Oct. 3, asks the City Manager to Businesses along Eglinton Avenue look into implewhere the menting 24 recommendations to Crosstown LRT is under construction promote business in the area, are struggling as customers avoid the offer loans and work zone. Colle said he was pushed to move the motion after some store owners in his Eglinton-Lawrence ward and elsewhere along Eglinton voiced their struggles. "It was largely informed by what I was hearing from businesses on Eglinton," Colle said. "We’re looking at ways to increase the amount of parking available, looking at parking promotions and trying to better co-ordinate efforts between city departments." Other key features of Colle’s motion include the possibility of waiving street fees for festivals, designating Eglinton as a Cultural Hotspot with arts and culture events, freezing property tax assessments, looking at tax deferrals for affected businesses, and using city funds on print, radio and television ads to promote the fact that Eglinton is indeed still open for business. While he is confident that many of his recommendations will be relatively easy to implement, he noted that his motion also features some challenging requests. "The most difficult part will probably be finding ways to offer forgivable loans, incentives and tax deferrals to ensure businesses can survive," Colle said.
