El Corazon is two Toronto artists’ latest public art installation at Humber Bay Shores on the Lake Ontario shoreline in Etobicoke. The driftwood sculpture of a long, lean, 25-foot androgynous

figure bathing on large, craggy boulders cuts an impressive figure before the Toronto skyline. El Corazon means "the heart" in Spanish. It’s an apt name. Heart is what compelled about 30 Humber Bay Shores condominium residents to descend on the shoreline last week under a

AARON D’ANDREA adandrea@metroland.com The outside of Cassandra Nicolaou’s coffee shop in Mount Dennis is being painted with a mural that has her buzzing with excitement. Her business, located at Weston Road and Eglinton Avenue West, is being transformed into an eyecatching art piece dedicated to bees. "People don’t think of bees as like crucial organisms for our livelihood but they really are," said artist Nick Sweetman. "It’s not just honey bees there’s over 300 bees in Toronto alone that we also need to look after." Nicolaou, vice-chair at the Mount Dennis BIA, said the mural is the first step in the BIA’s efforts to make the neighbourhood more bee-friendly. "We’re bordered by the Humber (River) and Black Creek, and so there’s a lot of green space around us," she said, adding it can be used as an education tool for their other projects. Those other initiatives

BIA hopes to make Mount Dennis bee-friendly

Justin Greaves/Metroland

Mount Dennis BIA vice-chair Cassandra Nicolaou, owner of supercoffee (left), and artist Nick Sweetman have teamed up to create a mural dedicated to bees on the southwest corner of Weston Road and Eglinton Avenue West. include the BIA’s plans to plant more bee-friendly greenery in planters and community gardens. They also plan to create "bee hotels," which are birdhouse-style homes where pollinators can lay eggs. They’re working with Restorative Landscapes, a

landscaping firm who’ve installed those hotels and greenery in West Queen West. Restorative’s Andrew Roy said they want to "make a splash at the intersection of Eglinton and Weston." "I think it’s at a cusp in evolution that it can take a

quantum leap forward as far as developing the right way," he said. "It has all the elements for success in taking the next step of development, as the transit hub comes through here and as the Kodak lands are being developed." The BIA’s plans will

complement Mount Dennis Community Association’s efforts to turn the area into an eco-neighbourhood, Nicolaou said. "I guess in the shortterm, in terms of implementing some of these ideas, it will bring people and energy to the actual street and neighbourhood," she

said. "I think in the longterm, I think it’s all about building a community that is attractive to people in terms of living here, spending time here, being out in the neighbourhood and I mean, that’s the long term goal is to just create a really livable, sustainable community."

Duo created popular Canada 150 sign l Continued from front

It still stands, just to the east of El Corazon, and attracts people in droves daily eager to snap a selfie with it. Ryan and Sanders Shelton’s "Toronto" sign has become an Instagram and Facebook phenomenon. Two months after its installation, a few hundred people a day still take photos with the "Toronto" sign, residents said. "The Toronto sign created a lot, a lot of excitement down here," EtobicokeLakeshore Coun. Mark Grimes said as he congratulated the artists. "I used to call this the ’million-dollar view.’ With the artwork of Julie and Thelia, I’ll now need to call it the ’billion-dollar view,’" Grimes said. While the artists’ "To-

ronto" sign, and now El Corazon, continue to attract admirers in the thousands, the installations have also attracted unwanted litter. So much so, the women created a makeshift garbage can out of driftwood they urge photo-takers to use. Don Henderson, president of the Humber Bay Shores Condominium Association, called their work, which the artists created out-of-pocket, "a magnet" for the community and the waterfront. "It contributes to the well-being and cleanliness of the community," Henderson said in an interview. "It instills a sense of pride." Ryan and Sanders Shelton toiled daily for three weeks from morning till

dusk to make El Corazon take shape. They deliberately animated the sculpture to lay back, its legs out in front, its arms supporting its torso because they suspected people would sit on it to take photos. "Whatever we built, we knew it had to be strong," Ryan said, explaining they used sheet metal to shore up the strength of the sculpture’s neck, head and torso. Atop a wood frame, they then drilled deck screws into the lengths of driftwood to secure it. Already, people have flocked to it. Danielle Bellissimo, who lives in the condo immediately behind El Corazon, took in the action Tuesday. "The community has re-

ally supported their work," she said. "I’m a photographer so I’m always down here on my bike. People always stop to ask me if I know where the installations are because of all the press and media. It’s wonderful." Jalileh Helalat, a resident who is a former artist, also came out to support the artists. "I live here and I love art," she said. "I’m very excited. It’s creative. I’m so grateful." To create more art for Toronto, Ryan and Sanders Shelton created a GoFundMe page called Shoreland Arts at www.gofundme.com/shorelandarts-public-toronto-art In its first week, it had raised nearly $2,000 of its $15,000 goal.

of you took us into your hearts," Ryan told the crowd of supporters. "It’s heartwarming, touching, life-changing. You should all be very happy with who you are and where you are." Ryan said in an interview "it’s still a surprise," the public interest in and support of their work, boosted in large part by regular postings on the 1,300-member and growing Humber Bay Shores Discussion Facebook page. Sanders Shelton agreed. "You tear up. We’ve gotten a lot of hugs," she said, standing behind El Corazon. "It’s emotional to see all these people who helped us along the way. We’ve made some really good friends."

Even an apricot-coloured Doodle seemed to shout its approval, barking whenever the crowd erupted in applause for the artists during El Corazon’s unveiling. "It makes me very, very happy," 16-year resident Louise Clay said of the artists’ work. "It’s art and enjoyment for everyone here. It makes you feel proud. All the community has been here supporting them. It has brought a lot of people together." For Canada Day, Ryan and Sanders Shelton unveiled a 150 sign made of driftwood to mark 150 years since Confederation. People loved it. Encouraged, the women then created a "Toronto" sign with a heart out of sixfoot-tall driftwood letters.

FANNIE SUNSHINE fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Toronto Paramedic Services’ first multi-function station, and the largest built in the city, will be situated in North York. The station at 1300 Wilson Ave., west of Keele Street and Humber River Hospital, will accommodate up to 25 ambulances and their respective paramedic crews, equipment and supply technicians, and the administrative and training offices of the North-West District Office of Toronto Paramedic Services when it officially opens Wednesday, Oct. 11. The site, which previously housed a French school, was chosen because "the property was available first," said Kim McKinnon, superintendent of public information and media for Toronto Paramedic Services, adding long-term plans in-

clude building an additional three to five multifunction stations across the city, with the next one targeted for Scarborough. "The design allows for more efficient maintenance and stocking of multiple ambulances, a more cost-effective process as the demand for our services continues to grow," acting chief Gord McEachen said in a release. McKinnon stressed Toronto Paramedic Services are not closing any stations; adding the multifunction station is a response to growth in call volume. "Other stations are smaller and house one or two ambulances," she said. "(It’s) a central large station to book on and sign off at the end of the day (before paramedics) are dispersed to the smaller stations across the city. The key is this is the central location for equip-

Fourteen equipment technicians have been hired to prepare and stock the ambulances at the multi-function station, something that was previ-

ously the responsibility of paramedics, McKinnon said. Though paramedic crews can be sent anywhere in the city, the paramedics assigned to the multi-function station will spend most of their time

covering the west and north ends of Toronto, she said. The new multi-function station will allow the service to meet the growing needs of the city, she said, noting "more paramedics require more stations and

vehicles to house them. "(This) allows the service to continue to provide response times we do now." The city plans to hire an additional 200 paramedics over two years, with some 1,100 currently serving Toronto.

Amazon bid shows the value of inter-city teamwork Toronto and the regions surrounding it have had a long and not entirely salutary history of going it alone, when a united front would have been better. Under former Mayor David Miller, Toronto withdrew from the Association of Municipalities in Ontario because he thought the city was better off talking to the provincial government on its own. Miller’s successor Rob Ford, largely skipped meetings of the Greater Toronto Area mayors and again, took us off on our own. It’s memories like that, that make all the more impressive, the efforts of Mayor John Tory and a coalition of Greater Toronto Area municipalities to work together on a bid to lure U.S. e-commerce behemoth Amazon to Canada. Toronto is teamed up with Durham, Mississauga, York, Brampton and Halton - and also Waterloo - under the umbrella of a new regional economic development coalition, Toronto Global, with an express purpose of bringing business to the region. The bid for Amazon’s business is a very bold early move. And there are many reasons to suspect that it might be doomed. There is enormous economic uncertainty in a U.S. company choosing to locate a headquarters outside of the U.S. at the best of times, and in these times it is moreso. It’s unclear what will be in the North American Free Trade Agreement - or even if there will be one once negotiations between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico are concluded. And there is risk in engaging the ire of America’s unpredictable President. And there are other viable options within the U.S. for the Seattle-based giant before they consider crossing a border. But Toronto and the region has much going for it: notably, political and social stability, and also more welcoming policies in bringing in overseas tech workers. And Toronto - or the region at least - would have much to gain. The request for proposal that Amazon has put out for hosts for its "HQ2," has indicated that it will spend more than $5 billion U.S. on construction, and will offer up 50,000 high-paying jobs. Toronto has some choice spots for such a development - notably, in the east-end Portlands. But even if those jobs and that construction migrate to other parts of the Greater Toronto Area, it would still be a colossal win for Torontonians. If nothing else, we all would have learned a valuable lesson in regional cooperation - that we could apply to the next big opportunity for growth. In the end, everybody wins.

The road to public office is... along a road It is a truth long held that in Toronto for the last decade or so at least, the road to political office is most often found. along a road. Rob Ford, back in 2010, paved his way to the mayoralty with automotive promises and commuter grievances: he promised to get rid of those car-blocking streetcars, erase bike lanes and build new transit underground, to keep the roads clear. When David Miller’s council put a tax on vehicle registration, Rob Ford promised to take it off. John Tory, meanwhile, made it his mission to get traffic moving faster on downtown roads. He directed the city to spend a premium to have roadwork completed more quickly,

DAVID NICKLE The City and an even bigger premium to maintain the elevated Gardiner Expressway in the city’s east end. Just last week, he announced a plan to bring traffic wardens pending provincial legislation - to city streets, to smooth traffic along. Now, Mayor Tory has not taken the hard-line pro-car position that Rob Ford and his brother Doug did back in the day: he’s

seen fit to support a bike lane pilot project on Bloor Street and a streetcarfriendly pilot project on congested King Street. But Tory knows well, that a politician that doesn’t cool the tempers of drivers stuck in traffic is a politician on the way out. It will be interesting to see, given that long-held truth, what Tory does with the newly-installed bike lanes on Woodbine Avenue. They were approved by Toronto Council earlier this year, and installed in late summer. and at least some of the east-end residents of the Beach are not taking kindly to them. Local councillor Mary Margaret McMahon, who has announced that she will not be seeking re-elec-

tion, is defending the laneswhich do provide a necessary linkage in the bike lane network between East York and the waterfront trail. Mayor Tory, who’s announced he will be running for a second term, has, as of this writing, supported keeping the lanes too. They may slow down traffic, but they make Woodbine safer by keeping car and bike traffic separate. That may all be true in real life. In politics? We’ll see. Ontario Chamber of Commerce policy director Ashley Challinor speaks to members of the Scarborough Business Association on Sept. 13 about the Ontario government’s Bill 148 and its potential negative effects on businesses.

Metroland Media Toronto is proud to be a media partner for SickKids.

Ontario’s Liberal government is just "pretending" to help vulnerable low-waged workers with its Bill 148, says a representative of the province’s largest business group. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce claims 185,000 jobs could be lost over two years if the bill and its minimum wage hikes passes this fall. "This is ultimately going to hurt women," since most minimum-wage earners are women, Ashley Challinor, the Chamber’s policy director, told members of the Scarborough Business Association. Ontario’s labour market is changing. Self-serve kiosks at stores and movie theatres are eliminating lower-wage jobs. But people disagree on whether people earning minimum wage - 30 per cent of working Ontarians - will be hurt or helped more by raising it to $15 an hour by 2019. Challinor said small businesses will react to the province’s timetable by cutting employees, while large ones will speed up automation. "With Bill 148, you’re making it harder to employ people. Employing people

is kind of against the trend right now," she said during a Sept. 13 Small Business Administration meeting at Centennial College. Challinor said the Chamber, which will release a detailed report on Sept. 26, believes small business owners will be hit hardest and should write or call MPPs with their concerns. In an interview, Deena Ladd, a spokesperson for Toronto’s Workers’ Action Centre, said the Chamber "sees it from one side only." Going, as the government plans, from $11.40 per hour to $14 on Jan. 1, and $15 in 2019, will lift people out of poverty, boosting spending and creating jobs, she argued. There will also be a spillover effect which should lead to pay increases for people making up to $19 an hour, Ladd said. How to handle this "differential" above minimum wage worried some owners at the Scarborough meeting, including Adam Watson, a partner in Pristine Property, a local landscaping company with 165 employees. Watson said employees he’s paying $17 or $18 will want raises, setting up a "domino effect throughout our company." Past minimum-wage in-

creases haven’t made him reduce his workforce, he acknowledged. "It’s this 32-per-cent increase that is alarming." The province’s own Financial Accountability Office reported on Sept. 12 moving to a $15-wage would mean a net loss of 50,000 jobs. Ontario’s Progressive Conservative party, meanwhile, stated its support for $15 an hour - which left some SBA members disappointed - while continuing to call the government’s schedule for increases too fast, and warning this will lead to either lay offs or higher consumer prices. Ladd said the Chamber is "fear-mongering," and employers who feel they must pay "poverty wages" should take a hard look at themselves. Wages have stagnated "because people haven’t done the right thing," and $15 an hour is barely above the poverty line in Toronto, she said. "I think people aren’t believing the hype." Brad Duguid, a Scarborough MPP and Ontario’s economic development minister, said the province’s economy is booming, and the changes in Bill 148 won’t upset Ontario’s international competitiveness.
