He got that opportunity through the province’s Youth Employment Fund set up this past September, which helps prospective employers offer four- to six-month job placements for young people looking for work. “I enjoy what I do and it’s easy when you enjoy it,” said

Hosten, who went into Youth Employment Services (YES) and subsequently got placed at Canadian Tire near Keele Street and Eglinton Avenue as a service advisor. “What I’m really sensing is that a general theme keeps coming up about Mount Dennis being a destination,” said Marabelle McTavish, president of the Mount Dennis Community Association (MDCA) that hosted the meeting. “The fact that we’re all talking about it is going to take this to the next level of reality.” Howard Tam, an urban planner with ThinkFresh Group who is working as a consultant for Learning Enrichment Foundation (LEF), moderated the meeting and provided examples on how some cities from around the world have approached development intensification with mixed uses and transit access. It’s a similar situation faced in Mount Dennis with the Eglinton

meeting including York SouthWeston councillors Frances Nunziata and Frank Di Giorgio, York South-Weston MPP Laura Albanese, and York SouthWeston MP Mike Sullivan. A steering committee has already been formed consisting of three residents from wards 11 and 12 as well as the respective councillors to ensure the community’s voice gets heard. Nunziata said she planned to arrange another steering committee meeting with Metrolinx soon. Residents also have another opportunity to have their say at the LEF annual general meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 21.

It’s time for spring cleaning W

Write us

ith the changing season, and a sense of renewal in the air, Torontonians are heading outside to clean up their homes – and their

city. This weekend, kicking off with corporate and school cleanup day on Friday, the city will be getting a good (spring) cleaning, at the hands of residents who want to make sure their city, their neighbourhood, and their own street are as pleasing as possible. These seemingly small actions by a group of residents helps build not only a sense of pride in the neighbourhood, but also a connection between those who live in it as they undertake a common goal. “It creates community,” said David Juliusson, program officer at Fort York National Historic Site, who is leading the cleanup of the historic site this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. “A lot of people in the neighbourhood are new... Something like this gives them a chance to meet other people.” our view What started in 2001 as a 20-minute cleanup initiative Small actions by amalgamated Toronto’s first mayor, Mel Lastman, has turned create strong into a three-day city-wide cleanup people get out of their communities where homes, grab a garbage bag and get working. The City of Toronto kicked off its annual spring cleanup campaign earlier in the month with the removal of graffiti, cleaning up garbage and hauling away debris from city property, which gathered over the winter months. Coinciding with Earth Week (April 22 to 27), the cleanups are happening across the city – from Etobicoke to Scarborough, North York to the Beach, York to Bloor West. To see what cleanup projects other Toronto communities are taking on and tips on how to get involved, see our special feature at http://bit. ly/1lxd5hY Not only do these cleanups make the city look great, but they bring out residents, students, businesses, organizations and community groups – many leading the cleanups, others joining in just because they care. These cleanup initiatives should be seen as just one of a multi-pronged approach to community building. Why not extend this kind of community exercise more often than once a year? You can find a community group / organization across the city. Look into joining one, and make a difference in your community.

Stanley Cup fever has a few side effects

W

e’re only a week into the NHL playoffs and it seems as if everybody is already hobbling around. I’m talking about the fans, not the players. The players are none the worse for wear. They’re not allowed to be at playoff at time. The fans, on the other hand, are plenty the worse. What’s more, they’re plenty the worse for simply watching and last I checked viewing was a non-contact sport. Talk about lightweights. Anyhow, what follows are a few of the most common ailments seen off the ice at this time of the hockey season. Twentydonitis It’s twice as painful as tendonitis because it affects both wrists at the same time. It comes from non-stop texting and tweeting – after every goal, every save, every shot,

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY pass, deke, hit, penalty, missed call, whatever. Especially after whatever. Cyberspace really comes to life after whatever and nothing is considered too insignificant to comment on during the first round of the playoffs. Onehundredandtendonitis That’s tweeting and texting just about phenomenal Colorado Avalanche rookie Nathan MacKinnon. Heck, tweeting and texting about what he does on each shift is a serious workout Sighatica This affliction is currently reaching epidemic proportions. It attacks non-sports fans stuck sitting on the subway across from two rabid fans who

are babbling incessantly about the NHL playoffs all the way from Union to Finch or from Kennedy to Kipling, only to take the occasional break to gab incessantly about the NBA playoffs. Condo-malacia Another malady plaguing non-fans. This one affects people who live in a building in which seemingly everybody has friends over partying on the balcony every night before, during and after the games. Foot in Mouth Disease This is extremely prevalent this time of year. The team that you’ve been bragging about non-stop all season, assured everyone they would win it all and that you have also chosen in the office Stanley Cup pool is about to be eliminated after the first round. Oh, the humiliation. Face Plant On Deskitis

By far the most debilitating first-round playoff disorder of all. It affects employees who live in the eastern time zone and make it a point to see every second of every playoff broadcast – and the postgame shows, too, of course – including all the games on the west coast that go into overtime, no matter how many overtime periods there may be. The symptom? Your work shift starts at 9 a.m. and you’re out cold by 9:01 a.m. And to add insult to injury? Your entertaining snoring exploits are booming on the company’s sound system. Coast to coast. In Dolby Atmos. The only thing missing is the popcorn. Apparently that doesn’t kick in until the second round. Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. His column appears every Thursday. Contact him at jamie.wayne@sympatico.ca

With December’s ice storm destroying much of Toronto’s tree canopy, Lowe’s Canada is giving away 1,000 red maples in Toronto to help replace “the visible scars left on the natural landscape.” Calling its campaign Project Replant, the company will be handing out 1,000 of the four- to five-foot trees at two of its Toronto stores. Five hundred will be available at the Lowe’s store at 1300 Castlefield Ave., northeast of Caledonia Road and Eglinton Avenue West. Toronto officials estimate 20 per cent of the city’s trees were lost in the ice storm, with some streets losing as much as 50 to 80 per cent. Lowe’s free trees will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the store parking lot. Trees will be given out while quantities last and no purchase is necessary. Grown in one-gallon containers, the maples are valued at $30 each. Recipients will also receive a card offering $10 off a $100 purchase at Lowe’s garden centres valid from April 26 to May 7.

he most important advice is also the most difficult, and that is, ‘Take care of yourself’.” That’s what Shirlee Sharkey, president and CEO of Saint Elizabeth Health Care, believes. ”Caregivers give so much of themselves, it’s important to recharge to allow them to continue to give. Time for yourself is important. It’s time you need to be the best caregiver you can be. I would also encourage laughter and fun – even when things are challenging, try to cherish the time, and treasure the tender

moments you have together,” she said. Sharkey is among the speakers at The Caregiver Show, May 14 at The Direct Energy Centre. Visit the show website at www. caregivershow.ca for more information and to register for this very special free day. An estimated eight million Canadians are family caregivers. It’s not uncommon for people to care for family members or friends in short- or long-term need. In fact, it is so common we don’t tend to identify ourselves as caregivers. The Caregiver Show has three main goals: to provide caregivers with information, to provide the opportunity for caregivers to network with other family

members in the same situation, and a chance for caregivers to get a little pampering. It’s absolutely free, and we suggest you register early to attend. Speakers at the show will include: • Teepa Snow is a highly sought speaker and an occupational therapist currently working as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. She has an independent practice in North Carolina. • Dr. Amy D’Aprix is co-founder of Essential Conversations Project, Inc., an organization dedicated to assisting families in having the key planning/decision-making discussions while honouring the emotional components inherent

in these conversations. • Shirlee Sharkey is president and chief executive officer of Saint Elizabeth Health Care, a leading national health care organization known for its social innovation, strong financial performance and pioneering practices. Metroland Media Toronto is the founding producer of the show. If you know someone in the community who is a family member caring for a loved one, why not suggest this show? Presenting sponsor is Saint Elizabeth Health Care. Sponsors include downsizingdiva. com, Alzheimer Society and Community Care Action Centre among others.

What an upset it would be, if city councillor Adam Vaughan had his hat handed him in the federal byelection in TrinitySpadina. Anything is possible in politics. But in this home-turf byelection in a riding whose outgoing incumbent is busy with her own election, it’s hard to see Vaughan doing anything but winning – taking over Olivia Chow’s former riding the same way he took over her former ward in 2006. News of Vaughan’s expected Liberal candidacy emerged last week, after a meeting with Liberal leader Justin Trudeau. In the Liberal caucus, Vaughan would take the lead on cities. No doubt he’ll also make an impression in Question Period. At city hall, Vaughan has been one of the more effective opposition councillors. It’s behaviour like that that has helped make the former journalist a very electable commodity in the downtown communities he represents – and less than that, across the breadth of the city – as became clear when earlier in the term

david nickle the city he was seriously contemplating a run for mayor. As such, his departure leaves an interesting-shaped hole in Toronto Council. It would be an exaggeration to say that Vaughan’s departure could mark a return to collegiality at the council that has become the Road-Warrior model of municipal government. But looking at the next term, there are going to be a number of departures that might just put the ‘order’ back in Robert’s Rules. At least one Ford brother – Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford – isn’t returning for 2015. Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande, the former budget chief, is retiring. York West Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti is showing every indication of coming back for now, but he’s facing a serious court hearing about his election expenses that could derail those plans. If all those people go – well of course we’ll miss them. The

thing about outrageous characters like the aforementioned is they’re all eminently watchable, and therefore electable. What a dull and potentially productive council we could have at the end of 2014. And it would be interesting to see what Vaughan can do in Ottawa. As a councillor, his reputation for a sharp tongue is matched by his track record as a deal broker – getting as many concessions as he can from the various developers looking to plant towers in the downtown neighbourhoods he represents. Vaughan has a genuine expertise, won on the ground, when it comes to urban issues. If Vaughan does indeed win the seat, and Justin Trudeau does indeed win enough other seats to form a government, there’s a lot he could do in pushing the federal government into taking a greater role in urban life and infrastructure. He wouldn’t even have to be particularly nice about it.

Smokers are asked to use cigarette butt receptacles instead of throwing the butts on the ground. GLAD Canada is again the lead partner of the Clean Toronto Together campaign for the fourth consecutive year. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be part of the Clean Toronto Together Program,” said Soula Kioussis, business lead of GLAD Canada in a statement.
