In anticipation of upcoming city committee and council meetings looking at bringing a men’s homeless shelter to Oakwood Avenue and Vaughan Road, the Oakwood Village Community Association (OVCA) has been busy hearing from the community. The OVCA hosted an information meeting at Montage Support Services yesterday for residents wishing to make deputations on the issue. “This will provide an opportunity to learn what (residents) can do, regardless what side you’re on,” said Andrew Ross, chair of the OVCA, speaking a day in advance of the meeting. At issue is a 50-bed homeless shelter for men set to open in the fall at 616 Vaughan Rd., the site of the former Town Talk Restaurant and Bar. >>>INFO, page 12

Artists shine spotlight on Mount Dennis CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com

T

he intersection of Weston Road and Dennis Avenue got a little brighter with a new public art installation launched this past week. Toronto art duo Daniel Young and Christian Giroux created the art work that resembles an illuminated grove of street lights, and named it Nyctophilia, which means to have a love of the night. “It’s absolutely our best,” said Young, adding that it’s the most public to date. “What’s so exciting is that Mount Dennis is a real place. It’s a real, lived place.” Local community members got to see the installation in full effect at the launch event last Wednesday, with dignitaries also present, including York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata. It consists of 10-metretall hydro poles with sidemounted light brackets supporting LED lights of different colours that are programmed to produce a “modulated cloud of light” once the sun goes down. Young noted one of the challenges with this particular project is the traffic island at Weston Road and Dennis Avenue didn’t offer much space in which to make something. But they worked with the city-owned piece of land and started colonizing the space with hydro poles, an ordinary thing

seen around the city, and configuring them in an unconventional way. “It became more and more sophisticated,” said Young, keeping in mind the sight line for this public art work is created by Weston Road. “You start to understand what’s possible for these spaces.” Young and Giroux’s work was chosen from a publicly requested list of submissions in June 2011 by a selection panel consisting of three visual art professionals and two community members. Nunziata said she was pleased to see the new art work largely well-received by the local community. “It brings life into Mount Dennis,” said Nunziata, noting the art project was paid by Section 37 funds secured by the city as part of the St. Clair and Keele subdivision development. “It really brings a lot of light into the area and it beautifies the intersection.” She added that a lot more needs to be done, but it’s a step in the right direction to help revitalize the Mount Dennis community. Mayor Rob Ford also applauded the work done by Young and Giroux. “This new public art work lights up a city intersection and functions as a landmark for the Mount Dennis neighbourhood,” he said in a statement.

11, rescued off Humber embankment wboy, A 11-year-old boy was rescued last Thursday afternoon after he fell off a steep cliff along the Humber River embankment. “He climbed a fence to retrieve a ball,” said Captain David Eckerman of Toronto Fire Service, adding the boy slipped about 20 to 30 feet down the 80-degree sloped cliff before landing on a rock. A firefighter was roped down to stay with the boy until a squad truck arrived right behind the 1025 Scarlett Rd. building to harness the boy up to safety, Eckerman noted. The boy is said to be unhurt.

An eye on your neighbourhood W

e’d like to hear about the best practices of your local Neighbourhood Watch. It’s because we think the best ideas are often old ones, and where the safety of a community is concerned, neighbours watching out for each other is about as effective as you can get. An organized, sustained program like Neighbourhood Watch takes it a step further, and is a program that should be maximized on our streets and across the city. Residents almost always support one another in time of crisis, or in the face of tragedy. We’ve seen that locally many times – just last week in Leslieville, after the two-alarm fire on Minto Street that had residents checking in on one another and offering assistance to police. That collaboration is inspiring to see, but it’s almost too bad it happens only after a crime or tragedy has already taken place. We need to be proactive if we our view want to have any lasting effect on the safety of our communities. Maximize our Neighbourhood Watch can help us do that. Created in the Neighbourhood 1980s by the Crime Prevention Watch groups Association of Toronto (CPAT), it empowers neighbourhoods, businesses and individuals to take action to reduce crime. Though the familiar signs are up all over the city, indicating the existence of a Neighbourhood Watch group, we’re curious to know how many are actually still active? We’re willing to bet far less than the number of signs still up. The success of the program is entirely dependent on the people of the neighbourhood. Even CPAT acknowledges on its website that programs go dormant when people move on, or they feel the particular reason for starting one in the first place has been solved, or the community once again feels safe. We shouldn’t take that sense of security for granted. We’d like to find out how many Neighbourhood Watch programs are active in Toronto. What’s the experience been, for those involved? Do groups share information, advice – or do they even know other groups exist? We’d like to investigate the possibility for growth and collaboration on a broader scale. The potential to deter crime is in our hands, but it’s only effective when residents work together towards that goal. If you belong to a Neighbourhood Watch group, contact us at ykg@insidetoronto.com to let us know.

This baseball playoff race is good stuff

W

ith the Toronto Blue Jays a legitimate playoff contender, be prepared to hear the phrase “good stuff” after every game. A lot. Jays’ commentators and broadcasters will be using it regularly as long as the club remains in the hunt. The expression is in reference to the performance of the starting pitcher that day or night. If he is said to have had his good stuff it means the guy on the mound was in command of all his pitches, which is bad news for the hitters. But the news can be just as bad for the guys in the batters’ box when it comes to the top throwers, even when they don’t have their good stuff. You see, what separates them from the rest of the pack is that they often win even when they have, say, just decent stuff. Or mediocre stuff. Heck, even so-so stuff. Somehow, even when nowhere near their best, the great ones are able to battle away and hang in

Ditto infielders or outfielders. Or designated hitters. Or managers or first and third base coaches. Or ball boys and ball girls. Or mascots, either. Umpires and referees are regularly told to get stuffed, but they don’t have good stuff. When it comes to baseball, good stuff appears to be something only a person on the mound has, or doesn’t have, depending on the outing. Running without name recognition

M

ayoralty candidates – at least some of them – get a lot of attention in Toronto municipal elections, and rightly so: the choice Torontonians make for mayor sets the future direction of the city more than any single vote. But there are 44 other elections taking place – and some are more important than others. In 2010, the Ford administration wouldn’t be what it became if Doug Ford hadn’t stepped in to hold onto the Ward 2 seat after Rob Ford left it, to take the mayoralty. Like too many other wards with well-known incumbents, Ward 2 has become a stronghold... not for an individual – but for the Ford family which has held it for 14 years. And Doug is so confident in its strength that he’s suggested his young nephew and intended successor Michael Ford need not even do interviews to take on the job. The brand is that strong. Actually, it may not be that strong. The Ford brothers have done much to dismantle to return to Harbourfront wStreetcars TTC streetcar service will finally return to Harbourfront this fall. Over the last two years, the 509 Harbourfront route running between Union Station and the Exhibition Loop has used replacement buses while the existing streetcar corridor along Queens Quay was relocated and completely rebuilt. The TTC says streetcars will return to the 509 service as of Sunday, Oct. 12. YOUTH ARTS GROUP join forces wTTC, The TTC has renewed a partnership with a local youth arts group to create public art for display at stations and on vehicles. The new three-year pact will see Arts for Children and Youth (AFCY) continue to create public murals depicting social themes and messages on old TTC advertising panels. The completed art will be mounted in subway tunnels as well as on the sides of buses and

david nickle the city their city-wide brand, and more to the point – motivate some fairly sophisticated opposition both city-wide and in the ward. That is where Andray Domise comes into the picture. A financial advisor and writer who spent his childhood in Rexdale and lives in Etobicoke now, the 33-yearold African-Canadian has been offering up a pointed critique of the Ford brand in terms of its bedrock support in north Etobicoke and among African-Canadian young people. He took on the idea of a Ford stronghold directly in a conversation that took place just prior to Michael Ford registering. “The whole thing has to do with anger and resentment,” he said. “A lot of support comes from people who feel disconnected and cut off from Toronto’s political establishment. You can see, looking around Etobicoke neighbourhoods,

Got an itch to delve through data on city cycling and a weekend to spare? The Bike Share Toronto Hackathon and Design Jam may just be for you. From Aug. 15 to 17, would-be hackers and planner types will converge upon Bitmaker Labs to play with open data sets provided by the City of Toronto and Bike Share Toronto. Organizers hope the work will culminate in new mobile apps, maps, and other ways to present information on city cycling habits. A $30 entry fee is required to participate. Visit www.

why people get the impression that nobody cares – all they have is half-finished projects and empty promises. If you can’t rely on people who represent you to get the job done, you’re going to end up rallying around somebody who is going to capture all that anger and resentment and passion.” Domise doesn’t hide his own anger, but he is betting that residents will eventually let go of that anger and resentment after being allowed to be more directly involved in deciding the shape of their community. Domise is also, of course, just a candidate right now – one of 13 running in Ward 2, and one of 12 without the advantage of name recognition, and by no means established to be the best choice among them. So his plans to turn Ward 2 from stronghold to freehold might be premature. But he is running a campaign that at least indicates a sense of the stakes on Oct. 27, both for city and for community.

The TTC has expanded wireless Internet access to one more subway station. Bay Station now joins Bloor-Yonge and St. George as the only stations providing free Wi-Fi access. The ad-supported service, which can be accessed through a mobile device while standing on the subway platform, is part of a pilot project the TTC hopes to eventually extend to the entire subway system. Wireless capable technology is also planned for installation on streetcars and buses in the next couple of years as part of a planned upgrade of the TTC’s existing communications system. But there are no plans as of yet to extend the free Wi-Fi service, provided by BAI Canada, to surface riders.

Cafe on the Square: Info meeting held Wednesday money owed to city a potential issue DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com City Hall visitors and staff could be in for a change in their diet unless the city and the operator of the Cafe on the Square restaurant can come to an agreement on how to deal with more than $330,000 owed to the city. The restaurant has been in place at city hall since 1999, when the amalgamated City of Toronto government moved its headquarters from Metro Hall to Toronto City Hall. In 2012, Toronto Council renewed the lease for 10 years, with stipulations that included paying a certain amount of costs for maintaining common areas in City Hall, and also to perform $140,000 worth of improvements and renovations to the first floor restaurant opening onto Nathan

Phillips Square. The arrears amount to $190,438.47. City real estate staff are asking council to allow them to “exercise its remedies under the Lease,” which could include terminating the lease. “In the event that the Lease is terminated, staff will make the necessary arrangements for an interim food service operator to provide grab and go service at City Hall until other options for delivering food service can be evaluated and implemented,” the report reads. The report will be considered at the Aug. 11 meeting of the city’s Government Management Committee.

>>>from page 1 At a community meeting July 28 to discuss the issue, opponents of the shelter said while they have compassion for the homeless and agree they need somewhere to sleep, they felt the neighbourhood, affected by socio-economic challenges, was not the best spot for a shelter. “I really do believe it’s not a good situation for anyone in the shelter system to be in a location with no social services at all, no coffee shops, with a number of bars at their doorstep,” Ross said. “There are concerns for our own safety and security as well.” The shelter, Cornerstone Place, is operated by Cornerstone Baptist Tabernacle, which has been situated at 833 St. Clair Ave. since 1996. The church occupied the main floor, and allowed the Out of the Cold program to run out of the upper floor for homeless men starting in 1999. The following year the church contracted with the city to operate an emergency program of its own – Cornerstone Place – which has 50 beds available for homeless men.
