Weston priest takes leave of ‘community with heart’ CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com

Many of the countries competing in the World Cup finals seem to be reflected in the diverse members who make up the York Jets Soccer Club. “It’s in their blood and they live to play the game,” said Pete Karageorgos, director of the York Jets Soccer Club, of the about 600 local youth registered to play this season. It’s not surprising as many of the youth aged five to 18 playing in the league, who now live in the former city of York, originally come from countries where soccer is as popular as hockey is in Canada. Considered “the world’s game,” Karageorgos said the sport’s popularity around the world is because it’s accessible to children regardless of income. >>>’IT, page 6

For the past five years, Father Michael McGourty has served in Weston, which he affectionately

calls the “little community with heart in the big city.” The St. John the Evangelist priest left the local parish Tuesday and will be on sabbatical for the first time since

being ordained in 1992. “There’s a real feeling of community,” said McGourty as he reflected on his time in Weston. “I love it. I honestly didn’t know Weston was here and I lived in

Toronto my whole life.” When McG our ty was assigned to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, he saw how friendly the residents were as he walked around the

community and neighbours commonly greeted him with a courteous hello. And with the social challenges that exist in Weston, >>>FATHER, page 6

Four-storey townhouses on Winona Drive OK’d despite residents’ worries Development scheduled to be approved by council July 8 LISA QUEEN lqueen@insidetoronto.com A four-storey townhouse development in the area of Vaughan Road and Oakwood Avenue has been approved by North York Community community council, despite the concerns of some residents. The development must still be approved by city council, which will consider the project at its July 8 meeting. Councillors voted in favour of 16 townhouses in two blocks of eight at 464 to 468 Winona Dr. just south of Vaughan Road at the June 17 meeting of North York Community Council. While applicant Michael Goldberg, of the Goldberg Group, praised the development, some residents objected to the project.

Presenting a 28-name petition, resident Jonas Cope acknowledged the number of units in the proposed development has been reduced over time from 24 units originally down to 18 and now 16. But a fourth floor has been added, which the community is “very strongly against,” he said. Four-storey townhouses will rob neighbours of privacy and cast shadows on surrounding properties, resident Hugh Alcock said. “We have chosen to live in this neighbourhood because we treasure our privacy,” he said. Meanwhile, resident Daniel Greenstein is upset almost 50 mature trees will be removed from the site to make way for the townhouses and he fears new trees planted to replace them won’t be of the same quality. Despite the concerns, city planning staff said the development is suitable for the location. “The proposed townhouse development is appropriate on this long, narrow site located

between the existing five-storey apartment building and a row of low-rise detached and semi-detached dwellings,” a report said. “It has good setbacks and transition to the abutting land uses. The proposal would result in a compact, low-rise residential development, thus making efficient use of land and existing infrastructure, including public services and facilities, parks and open spaces and recreation facilities.” Eglinton-Lawrence Councillor Josh Colle said residents want to ensure the right development is built in the neighbourhood. “This is not a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard) area,” he said. Colle called for planning staff to hold at least one meeting with interested community members to address some of their concerns, Goldberg said he doesn’t have a problem meeting with residents but he is eager to move forward since the project has been in the works for three years.

Ford wrong to play favourites with media

W

ith Mayor Rob Ford’s return to civic politics after a stay in a rehabilitation facility, we would expect to see some lessons learned and some new attitudes heading into October’s civic election. Ford has been a controversial figure at best of times, with as colourful a political persona as his private one. It’s all made for curiously divisive leadership for this large, world-class city. But when he begins to hold press conferences, picking and choosing whom he invites from the accredited city hall media gallery, we’re not quite sure he’s learned much during his time away. Surely all news organizations deserve a place at the mayor’s table. Metroland Media Toronto puts close to 500,000 newspapers on Toronto doorsteps every Thursday, with nine newspapers, including The York Guardian. Then there’s our www.insidetoronto.com website. And we haven’t even mentioned the 100-plus other Metroland newspapers in the province posting the stories we our view tell on their own websites. That’s not a bad household Mayor exludes reach and larger than the citizens when he Globe and Mail, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun and National Post picks favourites distribution combined on that day of the week. But it wasn’t enough to avoid exclusion from the mayor’s first meeting after rehabilitation earlier this week, along with The Canadian Press and NOW magazine and others. We expect that sitting politicians and hopeful candidates understand that people receive their news and information in a varied number of ways. When you play favourites with the media, you shut the door to opportunity to reach citizens who voted you into office. We really don’t get the point. Surely he might have learned that through his trials and tribulations with the Toronto Star. We sincerely hope Ford’s time in rehabilitation facilities has helped combat his personal issues. Given his comments when returning to Toronto on Monday, he would like you to believe that, too. We’d love to spend the months leading to the next civic election talking about policy and performance and not abuses. But being exclusionary to some media members continued a bad pattern of his prerehab practises and doesn’t create confidence in Ford having changed his practises. The mayor has a chance to hit a reset button. We’re not convinced he is prepared to take advantage of that opportunity.

Misunderstanding over food court snub

M

y summer’s not exactly off to the best of starts, I’m afraid. My alleged friend Cheryl just informed me she’s not talking to me. I say alleged, because the matter is currently before the courts. Food courts, that is. The point is, Cheryl said she was so upset she may never speak to me again. That was two Saturdays ago. Since then she has been phoning me a minimum of twice a day during the week and five times a day on weekends just to make sure there is no misunderstanding. When she says she’s not talking to you, she says she means it and she doesn’t care how many times she has to call you to remind you she means it. The reason I’m in her bad books? She claims I breezed right by her in the Yorkdale food court that fateful Saturday. According to Cheryl’s affidavit before the Parliamentary Committee

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY On Food Court Snubs, I looked her squarely in the eye several times during the process, too. What’s more, it wasn’t the first occasion I’ve done this, she also claims in her sworn declaration. She insists when it comes to her, I’m a serial snubber. Well, I plead not guilty on all counts and with an iron clad explanation. I didn’t intentionally disregard Cheryl in that crowded Yorkdale food court. The truth is, I don’t recall seeing her there. I also didn’t deliberately ignore her in a similarly jam-packed Fairview Mall food court last week as she insists. Nor did I avoid her in the busy Eaton Centre food court either. The reason I sometimes don’t say hi to Cheryl is simple: she’s not easy to recognize. She looks com-

pletely different just about every time you see her. Or don’t see her, to be accurate. She changes both her hair colour and hair style at least once a month each. After all these years I have no idea what colour her hair is, natural or otherwise. I also don’t know whether it’s wavy or straight, long or short, or if she has bangs or no bangs. Her wardrobe also seems to be in a constant state of flux. What she actually looks like is a complete mystery. Now, I’ve got to hand it to Cheryl for the constant makeovers. Not everyone has the courage to repeatedly change their appearance. She’s brimming with self-confidence. But she really has to cut me some slack for being unaware that we’ve crossed paths. The fact is, even when she’s standing right next to me, I often do a double take. The most ridiculous food court snub she accused me of was in Lawrence Square right after a power

outage several summers back. Everybody was in a hurry to get out of there and she zoomed right by me, wearing – wait for it – dark sunglasses, a scarf and a hat, which she later confirmed while taking me to task. Now I implore you, how the heck was I supposed to know that was her? No matter. There was an impassioned voicemail waiting for me when I got home. The message? Not only was she not going to talk to me for a whole year, but she predicted it would be the longest year of my life. Well, as it turns out her prophecy was bang on. Without doubt, it was the longest year of my life. Not that it came as any surprise, mind you. How could it not be? I couldn’t get her off the phone. Ford has to address personal record

I

t’s hard to know what to make of Rob Ford’s return to office. In the speech that he gave in front of a few reporters, Ford started off seeming quite contrite. He spoke of his enlightening experiences in the GreeneStone rehabilitation centre — that he overcame his own penchant for denial and understood that his addictions to drugs and alcohol are a disease that will require constant, diligent treatment. He pledged to keep clear of dangerous and unhealthy associations that have supported his addictions. He even apologized – to Torontonians and city councillors (especially mayoral candidate Karen Stintz) over remarks he made. And he acknowledged that he is not asking for forgiveness. That was a pretty good first couple of steps on a road heading toward redemption. But as the speech finished up, it was as though he stepped up onto the sidewalk, crossed a parking lot and disappeared down an alley.

w

Metrolinx addresses safety concerns

Metrolinx says it’s responding to safety concerns over construction taking place near Chaplin Crescent and Eglinton Avenue West. In a letter posted online at Metrolinx’s website for the LRT project (www.thecrosstown.ca), Crosstown community relations director Jamie Robinson writes Metrolinx has agreed to bar left turns onto Gilgorm Road for cars headed east along Eglinton. Previously no such prohibition existed. Pre-tunneling work is taking place at the Chaplin intersection for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in advance of the arrival of the first of two tunnel borer machines. More details on Presto system Metrolinx unveiled more details of its work to install the Presto smartfare system throughout the TTC. Riders can use the re-loadable card to gain entry at 14 TTC stations – to increase to 26 in the fall – but the service is not available on any vehicles.

w

david nickle the city It became fast clear that Ford’s speech was an election speech. He spoke of his accomplishments, both real and simply claimed: how the mayor stopped the gravy train, saved money contracting out garbage and saved public anxiety by making the TTC an essential service. A few breaths after saying he was not asking for forgiveness, he announced his intentions to ask for another mandate, and said he hoped to continue to be mayor for many, many years. And when faced with a barrage of the many questions that still hang over his mayoralty, he packed up his papers and walked off, answering not one of them. Now, to be fair, the mayor’s office and his brother Doug Ford had indicated for some time that the mayor would take no questions. But a spontaneous answer or two might have

Fare dispensing machines will also be available to allow for the purchase of individual cash fares or tokens. Terminals will be placed at some streetcar stops. Metrolinx is planning to install 60 Presto fare gates in various subway stations, replacing traditional turnstiles. The TTC expects to have Presto fully enabled by 2016. gone some way to clearing away the stink of a selfsatisfied stump speech that hung in the mayor’s wake. Given that he didn’t, the mayor might have spent the time talking about those hundreds of millions of dollars he’s saved taxpayers answering some of the questions that he might have anticipated, and apologizing more specifically for his racial, homophobic and sexist slurs. He might have apologized to the city staff that he’s on record as having abused. He might have apologized to Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair. He might have explained himself, in terms other than those that seem drawn from the pages of a recovery self-help book as much as they were from true epiphany. The reality is that Rob Ford is a long way from being able to boast about a political record, without first addressing the serious deficit in his personal record.

A city report is recommending a subsidized fare strategy for low income TTC riders. The report, endorsed by both TTC customer service chief Chris Upfold and the city’s executive director for social development Chris Brillinger, makes seven recommendations for a general “fair fare” policy to be considered by the city’s executive committee. If the executive committee signs off, it will go to city council for a final vote later in July. It wouldn’t go into effect until at least the end of 2015. time as the local priest. When some of the students had to attend school in makeshift classrooms within the church due to crowding at the old school building, McGourty was able to encourage parishioners of the church to help cover the $30,000 cost associated with renting that space. “The Father pulled it off,” Bennett said. He added that under McGourty’s leadership, the church is able to continue running a lot of programs for the community. “He’s going to be a very tough priest to follow,” said Bennett, calling McGourty “the best priest in the Toronto diocese.” McGourty initially planned to ask for a sabbatical two years ago when he celebrated his 20th anniversary as a priest, but decided to hold off with several projects being

discussed and underway like the building of the new St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. With some of the projects now expected to take place for a few more years, McGourty, who will be turning 50 in December, decided the timing was right to take his sabbatical. He plans to spend five months in Spain and another five months in Rome studying spirituality. McGourty confirmed that Father Andrew Maderak, who previously served in Brampton, will be the new priest assigned to St. John the Evangelist. “He probably thinks he’s coming into the big city, but he’s not,” chuckled McGourty, adding he’s already talked with him about the “small town” feel of Weston. “It’s going to be a wonderful and exciting place.”

‘It strengthens the community’ >>>from page 1 “That’s the great thing about soccer,” said Karageorgos, noting all that’s needed are kids with energy and a desire to play, a ball and a field. “It’s a much cheaper sport to play than hockey.” The York Jets Soccer Club, which has been operating for more than 30 years, strives to provide a league for local kids living in a lowincome neighbourhood. “We’re serving the needs of a needy community,” said Karageorgos, adding volunteer coaches help make playing in their league affordable. “Really

it’s about the volunteers and people who want to make an investment. We’re always looking for more volunteers.” That will be especially important as he hopes more youth will join soccer leagues across the city with the excitement level building thanks to the World Cup action this summer. “Everyone would love to see Canada make it to that level and compete in the World Cup,” Karageorgos said. “I think it’ll raise the profile of soccer in Canada.” Former York Jets players like Ashtone Morgan,

who currently plays for the Toronto FC, will also help increase the interest in youth to play soccer as there are more local players to look up to and emulate. Locally, Karageorgos added, the whole neighbourhood would ultimately benefit from having kids in the area come together from all backgrounds to play. “It strengthens the community,” he said. He added local organizations of various denominations, including Frontlines, the Weston food bank, and the church’s own St. Vincent de Paul, all work together providing assistance to those in need. “Amidst in all the difficulties, you do see some wonderful things,” McGourty said. Report cards: Environmental alliance issues their grades

Mayor Rob Ford and many of those who’d been loyal to him on council over the last term got failing grades for their protection of the environment from the Toronto Environmental Alliance (TEA). The environmental activist group released its Enviro Report Card for council’s 2010-2014 term on June 26. The report card graded based on how councillors voted on 31 issues, ranging from water efficiency and downspout disconnects to the 2011 decision to remove the Jarvis Street bike lanes, to Ford’s motion in January to cut $7 million from the city’s tree planting budget. On that scale, Ford did worse than anybody, scoring 13 per cent – or an ‘F’ – along with 16 other councillors. Seventeen councillors, meanwhile, scored ‘A+’. Franz Hartmann, the executive director of TEA, admitted the result skewed far from a bell curve. “If you think of this council as the class of 2014, it could best be described as a battle between those who want to protect existing environmental programs and those who want to dismantle them,” he said. “Thankfully the slackers, led by the mayor, lost. So we’re no worse off now than we were in 2010, but Torontonians should be profoundly disappointed with how their mayor did.” Hartmann insisted the report card was not deliberately skewed against Ford. “It so happens that when we ran those numbers the mayor almost always voted against the environment and many of the people who supported him joined him,” he said. “There are exceptions — people who voted with the mayor on some issues but not on others.” Here’s how Toronto Councillors fared in the Toronto Environmental Alliance’s Enviro Report Card. Total of 49 applications for pair of council vacancies A total of 49 people have applied to fill two vacancies on Toronto Council — and on July 7, they’ll all interview for the jobs in front of 42 city councillors and the mayor. The list of those interested in taking the places of ex-councillor Adam Vaughan in Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina and newly minted MPP Peter Milczyn in Ward 5 Etobicoke-Lakeshore was released last Thursday. In Ward 20, 29 people have applied, including former Scarborough Southwest Councillor Adrian Heaps. In Ward 5, former city councillor Blake Kinahan is asking for the Monday appointment, as well as community worker Agnes Potts — whom Milczyn hinted he might support, following his election. Also in the running is Kinga Surma, a former employee of Milczyn’s, who left his office after working on his 2013 byelection opponent Doug Holyday’s campaign. All of the candidates for the job will be able to address Toronto Council at a special meeting July 7, starting at 9:30 a.m. It could take some time. Each candidate can address council for up to five minutes, after which all 43 members of council may ask that candidate one question each. Council will vote on the new members by ballot, and they will be sworn in to serve the remainder of the term immediately afterward.
