The 10th annual Salsa On St. Clair event runs Saturday (noon to 10 p.m.) and Sunday (noon to 8 p.m.) with the street transformed into “a showcase of Canada’s biggest salsa party featuring live music, dance lessons, fiery food and family fun.” The free celebratory event, which takes place on St. Clair Avenue between Winona Drive and Christie Street, is presented by TLN Telelatino, the Hillcrest Village Business Improvement Area and the City of Toronto.

FYI: Organization helping York youth turns 20 CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com Starting out as a recreational program for local youth, For Youth Initiative (FYI) has matured into an organization that empowers about 1,000 youth each year in the former

city of York through its many programs and in partnership with all levels of government. The local organization is celebrating its 20th year with a fresh, new logo to go along with a brand new website at www.foryouth.ca “We’ve rebranded because

we’re all grown up,” said Lekan Olawoye, who has served as FYI executive director for the past six years. “We’re no longer a teenager.” He credited the “incredible pioneers” for the early organic growth of FYI, working to meet the needs of youth in the com-

munity and addressing such issues as youth unemployment, violence and school dropout rates. “They saw something had to be done,” Olawoye said. With some initial funding from the former city of York, FYI began to grow and became

incorporated in 2000. The organization also moved locations from the old courthouse on Eglinton Avenue to its current address at 1652 Keele St. where they just occupied two rooms in the basement totalling 700 square feet. >>>FOR, page 12

Get customized transit reports and learn how local projects affect you Bookmark insidetoronto.com/transit Transit affects everything we do - whether it’s the struggle with gridlock during the commute to and from work, or construction that’s blocking our regular route to baseball practice, or if we just want to find a better way to get around the city. Getting around - by car, bike, subway, streetcar or other methods - is a major topic of conversation in Toronto these days. Transit is a key issue and it’s an important one for residents to be plugged into. We at The Guardian recognize that navigating all the information out there, about current projects, road construction, future and proposed transit plans is not an easy task. That’s why we and our sister papers at Metroland Media Toronto have launched a new transit portal online, where you can find transit information in a simplified fashion. See the new transit website at insidetoronto.com/transit

There you’ll find:

Transit reports based on the kind of commuter you are Transit reports based on geography, with a map of the city Project overviews for the major city projects Plus we have all our regular news stories on the transit issues of the day, and the TOinTransit columns written by transit reporter Rahul Gupta. Check it out today, find the reports that matter most to you and bookmark them to catch the updates. We’ll be adding more features as the site grows and want your feedback. Mark Livingston’s local business REBARN will be getting national exposure with his custom furniture, barn doors and hardware to be featured on the popular TV show Property Brothers. Livingston makes his furniture and customized sliding barn doors ordered by clients across Canada and the U.S. in his workshop near Jane Street and Alliance Avenue. “It’s a busy little shop,” Livingston said. But it didn’t start out that way. “I started this business with $100,” said Livingston, who used Kijiji to sell his first table, which he built in his garage. “Now we’re full-on busy.” His son and two nephews now help out in the shop. Lola Kerecki helps market her husband’s business by contacting shows to display some of Livingston’s work on air. He has had previous publicity after working with interior designers Colin and Justin on their show Cabin Pressure. Now he’s signed to do 13 episodes of the popular HGTV show Property Brothers with twins Jonathan and Drew Scott. “We’re excited about it,” he said. “They’re like the superstars of home renovations.” But the majority of the business still comes through his website, www.rebarn.ca He still prefers talking to his clients either by phone or in person

to understand what they really want. “We focus on quality first,” Livingston said. Most of the reclaimed lumber comes from destroyed barns in Orillia, he added, noting some of the wood he uses is more than a century old. REBARN also provides a variety of finishings on the wood to create everything from a rustic country style design to a more contemporary look. That’s where Livingston’s previous experience as a “career painter” comes in handy. His attention to detail could also be attributed to his former job as an

executive chef in Whistler, B.C. “But the hours were just nonsense,” he recalled. Today, he lives and works in the former city of York where he enjoys the three-minute commute to work. “Life takes you places,” said Livingston, offering a suggestion on how to continue to find success. “It’s all a matter of working hard and making a product people want.” For more information on REBARN, visit www.rebarn.ca or go to the Facebook page at www.facebook. com/REBARNCANADA

here’s so much going on with transit in Toronto these days. Construction projects are popping up everywhere – on roadways, highways, tracks and bike lanes. We all know about the maintenance work on the Gardiner Expressway, but do you know what’s planned for your local streets? The Union-Pearson Air Rail Link, the Relief Subway Line, the Eglinton Crosstown LRT – all major projects in the works, but do you know how each one may affect you? Or when they’ll be complete? Or how much they cost and who’s paying for them? Torontonians may agree transit is an important topic, but it’s been our experience that the subject is so mired in technical jargon and bureaucratic red tape, it’s difficult for the average person to comprehend the picture. People aren’t sure how our view big it affects them – and when that connection is lost, people become Our special disengaged. why The Guardian and website has ourThat’s sister papers at Metroland latest news Media Toronto have launched an online resource called The Transit Project. It’s a website designed to provide you the latest news on transit and commuting in and across this city. It’s tailored to provide you information on projects as it relates to you – by commuter type and/ or geography. We’ve got an interactive map of the city that provides reports on the areas you select. We’ve got overviews of the major projects on the go, like the Union Station revitalization, but also projects that are still on the books for the future, like the Yonge North Subway Extension. And then there’s our ongoing transit news pieces written by transit reporter Rahul Gupta (@ TOinTransit), as well as other staff on issues that impact our local communities. There’s helpful info on getting around the city, by car, bike, TTC or GO train. This is just the latest in a series of online products we’re creating to add value to your weekly newspaper. Many people visited our World Cup site at www. insidetoronto.com/WorldCupTO to find venues to watch games, read game and team news, and tap into the culture of participating nations. The Transit Project is a resource we plan to grow, especially with feedback from you. So check it out, bookmark it and visit often for updates: www.insidetoronto.com/transit. Computer and Internet lingo 101 W

hile dependency on the Internet is growing by the second, there are still many seniors who have yet to get their first computer, let alone one of the jazzier new devices now flooding the market. The cost is a factor, of course, and the technology is very intimidating to neophytes, too. But what’s also scaring them off is the baffling computer and Internet lingo. I can’t say I blame those people. I’ve been connected for ages and I still regularly struggle with the jargon myself. answers to faqs So, in an effort to try and ease some of the fears newbies have about finally giving in and getting in the game, here are answers to the most common questions. 1. What the heck is a

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY

cable modem? Of course, you mean who the heck is Cable Modem and he was the runner-up in American Idol 2 to the overwhelming winner, Maxell Tapes. 2. What is best laptop out there for me? Given that enormous gut sir, I would say a very loosefitting cardigan. 3. I keep hearing bandwidth is very important. How do you measure it exactly? Easy, peasy. Left to right. You start with the drummer, followed by the lead guitarist, then the rhythm section, the background vocalists and always end with the lead singer. 4. What is a cursor? Every coach in professional sports, apparently. 5 When would I expect to

double click? Right after you’ve been sitting in a chair for a really long time and try to bend your left knee as you get up. 6. What do you do if your mouse gets stuck. I’d have him call Jenny Craig, if I were you. Server issues 7. What’s the best protocol to follow when your server is down? Make a beeline for the buffet table faster than Usain Bolt being chased by Darth Vader. 8. What are the symptoms of a computer virus? A stuffed node. 9. What’s malware. Whatever Mal’s spouse tells him to ware, if he knows what’s good for him. 10. What are some of the most popular websites? Behind the couch, next to the oven, under your bed. You know the drill. 11. What is a blog?

A log for the Blue Man Group. 12. Exactly how do you suggest I Google my husband? I’d love to tell you, ma’am, really I would, but alas this is a family newspaper. 13. And finally, what’s a javascript? Boy double double meets girl double double, boy double double loses girl double double, boy double double finds girl double double once more, then loses girl double double yet again and finally, wins girl double double back. After which they both live happily ever after. And presumably set the stage for a sequel.

Parliamentary Committee makes interim report on the transport of dangerous goods More must be done to protect neighbourhoods near rail lines, says MP Mike Sullivan York South-Weston MP Mike Sullivan is a member of the Committee on Transport, Infrastructure & Communities reviewing policies on the transport of dangerous goods, following the Lac Mégantic tragedy.

Last summer a 74-car train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in Lac Mégantic, costing 47 lives and destroying 30 buildings. Five months later, after pressure from NDP MPs, the Minister of Transport asked the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Infrastructure & Communities to review policies on transporting dangerous goods. The Committee recently issued an interim report—a final report will come in December.

Watch out for Mike Sullivan in your ‘hood!

Mike and his team will be out knocking on MP Mike Sullivan recognizes the risks faced by neighbourhoods along rail lines in York South-Weston. He is doors this pressing for better disclosure to municipalities and first responders when dangerous goods pass through summer, listening neighbourhoods, safer speeds, and the use of alternative routes. to your concerns, For a copy of the Committee’s report, please contact my constituency office at 416 656-2526, or e-mail so please say mike.sullivan@parl.gc.ca hello! This review is timely as oil shipments by rail have increased from 500 carloads/year in 2009 to 160,000 last year, expected to rise to 510,000 by 2016. Witness testimony revealed that federal policies have been slow in dealing with the risks of transporting these goods: too many exemptions to safety policies are permitted; the majority of oil railcars are not considered safe.

strike won’t affect streetcar rollout

rahul gupta

A strike by workers at Bombardier’s Thunder Bay plant will not impact the immediate rollout of new streetcars, says the TTC. Nine hundred workers at the plant – which manufactures the Toronto Rocket subway cars as well as the new streetcar fleet about to make its debut on the 510 Spadina line – walked off the job Monday after failing to come to an agreement on a new contract. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross declined to comment on the job action. He said the TTC was still committed to launching the first of the new streetcars on Spadina as of Sunday, Aug.31.

Trans offices Monday. The drivers say they will lose $1,500 per month because their new contract with the TTC to provide Wheel-Trans service imposes a per-kilometre cut of 36 cents, reduced from the previous wage-rate of $2.86 per kilometre. They say such a drop is “incomprehensible” given rising fuel and maintenance costs. The TTC maintains even with the cuts, the drivers are receiving a fair wage. Accessible taxis make up 60 per cent of all WheelTrans service.

A west-end subway closure is planned for this weekend. From Saturday to Sunday there will be no service between Kipling and Islington stations, located on the Bloor-Danforth line. During the closure, westbound trains will return east at Islington, and riders seeking to get to Kipling can use a shuttle bus service provided by the TTC. There is also planned service to Jane Station for accessible riders who need to use an elevator.

Project Water marks 15 years of helping people in need CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com It all started 15 years ago when Jody Steinhauer learned that more homeless people die of dehydration in the summer than freeze to death from exposure in the winter. So Steinhauer, president of The Bargains Group, launched Project Water, which has provided more than 1.8 million bottled water to those in need since its inception in 1999. “I want to thank all of the incredible volunteers,” said Steinhauer, who also thanked all the sponsors at the launch of the 15th annual event that took place at The Bargains Group office on Caledonia Road July 9. “Thank you for making this project happen.” More than 100 volunteers were on hand to help load the 300,000 bottles of water from Nestle Waters Canada as well as 3,000 summer survival kits into trucks to be delivered to 170 social service agencies, outreach providers and homeless shelters. Eric Cisterna was happy to volunteer, knowing the importance of what they were doing actually helped him several years ago

when he lived on the streets for a short time. “You all here are changing people’s lives,” Cisterna addressed the crowd at the event, recalling that one morning at 4 a.m. on Bay Street when a man came by and gave him bottled water and a sandwich. Since then, he’s worked for

For Youth Initiative expands its space and its programming

neighbours’ night out

At left, P&M Restaurant’s George Kalamaris works the grill during Weston Neighbours Night Out events on Elm Street Thursday evening. Top right, Jon-Ann Bennett, right, and her daughter Alexandrea enjoy some food at the barbecue. Above right, Lawrence Garrett, left, keeps an eye on his granddaughter Piper Garrett as she tries out the driver’s seat of a fire truck, courtesy of Toronto firefighter Carl Zikovitz. This was the 10th annual Neighbours’ Night Out hosted in Weston Village. Photos/Peter C. McCusker

>>>from page 1 More young people from the neighbourhood started to come out and the need to expand, both in space and in programming, was apparent, as was the need for more funding. Since Olawoye came aboard, he’s been working to forge partnerships with all three levels of government, other community organizations, and corporate sponsors. The challenge, he said, was to demonstrate to all the stakeholders how those dollars can positively impact local youth. “I had to make it safe for them to invest,” Olawoye said. “You should have a plan for that money.” To his frontline staff of 25 people, he would just remind them to “let our work do the talking.” “Our staff work with youth every day,” said Olawoye, adding that while FYI has evolved over the years, its goal hasn’t changed since its inception. “We’re driven by the needs of the youth.” One example, he noted, was last summer FYI helped connect youth with nearly 150 summer jobs. They received about 700 applications.

“We brought those jobs in the community because the need was there,” he said. Today, FYI has a budget of $1 million to run its various programs, including a youth drop-in service, leadership program and tutoring services. The new website was designed so that youth and stakeholders can better interact with the organization. Looking ahead, Olawoye said he wants FYI to maintain its grassroots connection by continuing to offer necessary programs to York youth. But as the organization continues to mature, he sees FYI being able to impact change on a wider scale whether it’s through policy change or by helping other youth organizations develop program efficiency through its own learned experiences. “When you turn 20, you try to pull up your pants a little higher and put on a college shirt,” he said.

Councillors focus on themselves Council’s marathon July meeting stretched out for four days last week. It wouldn’t have gone nearly as long as that, were it not for several juicy items irresistible to councillors in an election year: themselves. Council spent much of that time talking about reports from, and the future of, the city’s accountability officers. It extracted an apology from Mayor Rob Ford for robocalls, extracted a few months of salary from Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti and didn’t quite extract Toronto ombudsman Fiona Crean from her job. Each of these debates were extraordinary. The matter of Ford’s apology to Councillor Paul Ainslie was unique, in that Ford did in fact apologize. At the end of the long debate, Ford returned to the council chamber and said sorry for robocalling every house in Ainslie’s Scarborough East ward last year to tell them how he hadn’t consulted with them about his vote against the Scarborough subway, when in fact Ainslie had consulted rather a lot. There wasn’t much at stake:

Ford has not done what the integrity commissioner has asked in the past, and gotten away with it. There was a great deal more at stake in the matter of Mammoliti, who in the end lost three months’ pay over an $80,000 “gift” he received from a fundraiser that the integrity commissioner maintained to be improper. Mammoliti disputes many elements of the integrity commissioner’s report on the matter, but council was unswayed and overwhelmingly voted to effectively take $26,000 from him. This is the first time in Toronto’s history that council has voted to impose a monetary penalty against one of their own. The penalty is somewhat diminished by the fact that it is so much less than the amount of money that Mammoliti received. But council could do no more: three months’ pay is as much

penalty as an integrity commissioner can recommend and council can impose. Council did the right thing there, and also, in a manner of speaking, in the matter of Crean’s future. A critical mass of councillors, including those stung by her criticism of their work on the Toronto Community Housing board and the Public Appointments Committee, made the prospect of garnering the 30 votes necessary to extend Crean’s appointment impossible. But a simple majority was all it took to punt the decision to 2015. It would have been an awful message to send to accountability officers that their future depended on maintaining good relations with badly behaving councillors. In the end, at least council was able to finish their penultimate council meeting on something resembling an ethical high-ground when it came to understanding their roles and obligation.
