IN PERFORMANCE: Members of Uganda’s Watoto Children’s Choir perform at the Faith Sanctuary Pentacostal Church on Jane Street on Saturday evening.

Family Fun Day set for 12 Division Come out to the 15th annual 12 Division Toronto Police Service Community and Family Fun Day taking place this Sunday, June 8, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend the event at the 200 Trethewey Dr. police station. The event will feature plenty of fun for all ages including a

barbecue, basketball clinics, face painting, music, balloons, and prizes to be won. Parenting and community information as well as crime

prevention and safety displays will also be available at the event. For more information, call 416-808-1068.

While the official grand opening of UrbanArts took place Friday, local youth have already taken advantage of the new location at 5 Bartonville Ave. E. for the past several months. “There’s always a buzz of activity,” said Marlene Mckintosh, executive director of UrbanArts, who invited the community to celebrate its new space with local dignitaries also in attendance. “It’s been amazing. The space is so well used.” Many of the speeches during the ceremony noted the incredible transformation of the former City of Toronto building where traffic signs used to be made. “It was pretty grungy,” said Laurie-Shawn Borzovoy, board chair of UrbanArts. “But if you have a dream, you could see the possibility, you could see past the grunge.” Now, six years after the initial community consultation meetings, it’s become a well-used building with a new kitchen, professional music and dance studio and a computer lab for youth to use and enjoy. Both York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata and York South-Weston MP Mike Sullivan congratulated the staff and volunteers at UrbanArts for >>>SPACE, page 13

Trip to advance poll took 40 minutes CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com York South-Weston NDP candidate Paul Ferreira took the bus from Weston Road and Eglinton Avenue to vote in the advanced poll Monday at the local returning office at the north end of the riding. He said it took him 40-plus minutes, noting that many voters living in the central region of York South-Weston will have to face similar barriers to cast a ballot without any advanced polling stations between Lawrence and St. Clair avenues. “In an urban riding, no one should have to travel 40 minutes to vote in the advanced polls,” said Ferreira, adding it could take even longer for those with mobility issues. The Ontario NDP party lodged a complaint with Elections Ontario last month and followed up with a lawyers letter in hopes of getting more advanced polling stations in the riding.

Ilona Boutros, Elections Ontario acting director of operations, responded to the lawyers letter last week, that “in respect of York SouthWeston, I understand that the experienced Returning Officer, Denise Davis, has worked hard to overcome availability challenges to provide as many in-person voting options as possible for this election.” The letter continued that finding a location in the area that meets the Site Accessibility Standard “has proven to be particularly challenging during this election as many of the locations that we have traditionally used in this electoral district are not accessible due to the current construction activities.” Suggestions put forward by the NDP campaign for an advanced polling site were turned down, citing the Centennial Community Recreation Centre could not accommodate a multi-day poll due to the construc-

tion. Three churches were also looked at as a replacement location, but one declined to hold the advanced poll and the other two were not accessible. The York Civic Centre, added Boutros, suffers the same construction challenges as the Centennial Community Recreation Centre and isn’t considered a suitable option since it is primarily a court facility that only offers pay parking. In a separate email to The York Guardian sent Tuesday, Andrew Willis, communications coordinator for Elections Ontario, wrote that “Elections Ontario strives to serve all voters in a convenient and accessible manner. “Upon receiving notice of an election, our electoral district administrators are tasked with securing leases for polling locations within a very short timeframe. While we will be inquiring internally as to why the York Civic

Centre was not used as an advance polling location, we often find that facilities are unavailable or unable to be secured in the notice period we require.” Ferreira responded that a lack of advanced polling stations makes voting much more difficult and construction on Weston Road just adds to the commute to the local returning office located near Weston Road and Hwy 401, further disenfranchising voters to cast a ballot. “This is frankly about protecting democracy in York South-Weston,” said Ferreira, who is hoping to hear back from Elections Ontario Chief Electoral Officer Greg Essensa himself. In the meantime, he said his campaign office will help voters by offering assistance, rides and directions to the nearest polling station.

Future of Church Street hospital site topic of local meeting CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The 11-acre site where the current Church Street site of Humber River Hospital is located will be up for sale with proceeds going to the new hospital being built near Keele Street and Hwy 401. But community members learned Monday evening at a packed meeting hosted by York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata on the Church Street site that the sale won’t be taking place this year. That’s because Nunziata and city staff were notified a month-and-a-half ago about a 1948 deed on the property, which stipulated if the site ceases to be used for hospital

purposes, the Town of Weston (now the City of Toronto) would regain possession of 1.2 acres of the site where the community hospital was first built. “It’s ultimately up to city council to decide what to do with these lands,” said Tim Park, manager of acquisitions and expropriations in the city’s real estate division. He added, however, city staff will first see if there’s interest from any city department to use the small parcel of land available. Then city staff will be preparing a report for council. The estimated three- to four-month process means the report won’t be ready before the municipal election in October, and will likely

Too many clothes & nothing to wear? www.TrendTrunk.com

be presented sometime in 2015. Park added city staff also intends to work with hospital staff to find a solution that works for all parties. In the meantime, Nunziata said she wanted to gauge the community on what they would like to see on the site. James Darvill, who’s lived next to the Church Street since 1964, said he hoped the hospital won’t be demolished but repurposed into something like a seniors’ home or long-term care facility. “The community deserves some sort of social benefit,” said Darvill, who also served as the former chair of the Pelmo Park Community Association.

“I don’t want to see the hospital pulled down. Don’t demolish what we got.” Other residents expressed concern that the site will eventually be sold to a developer with the intent of building townhomes, which may increase local traffic and overcrowd schools in the area. “Somebody can come in and ask for a rezoning application, but it doesn’t mean the city is going to support it,” Nunziata responded. Lou Moretto, city manager of community planning, noted any developer will most likely require a rezoning application as most of the site is currently designated to be used for only hospital-related purposes.

Reuben Devlin, president and CEO of Humber River Hospital, also addressed the community at the meeting, giving an update on the status of the new hospital located two kilometres away and the need for it. Initial plans to expand the Church Street site to accommodate the increasing number of patients fell through, he explained, when the Ontario Municipal Board only allowed a seven per cent expansion to the current building – not the 28 per cent requested. The plan to build a new “lean, green and digital” hospital site – 1.8 million square feet in size – then moved forward with the intention of selling both the Church and

Keele Street sites. “We want to continue to be a community hospital...while providing the best health care possible,” he said. “Moving day is slated to be Oct. 18, 2015.” Devlin also committed to working with the city to sell the site. “We want it to happen in a co-operative way. We don’t want the site to be dormant for the next six years,” Devlin said. But he assured local residents that if the site isn’t sold before the move-in date, the grounds will be kept clean to be respectful of the community.

his Friday, June 6, marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Canadian soldiers and Allied forces led a successful invasion of France off the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. It’s an event that’s earned a honourable place in our history books and put us forever in the debt of the brave soldiers who risked their lives for such a critical mission, that would ultimately turn the tide and end the war. Canada’s role was a major one but it did not go without sacrifice, as Canadians suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including 359 killed. As we honour and remember those who served - sadly, a lifetime ago for most those soldiers – let’s extend our view of our commemoration on this special day to also consider other impacts of military service. June 6th For instance, take time to think is 70th of the families who did, and conto, watch their loved ones anniversary tinue head off to war. At Toronto City Hall tomorrow, of D-Day a special event is taking place in Nathan Phillips Square to mark the anniversary of D-Day and one of the speakers is Joanne O’Halloran, whose father Edward served during the Second World War and was at the Normandy invasion. She’ll be sharing her experience as a soldier’s child. It’s a perspective we don’t hear often, but one that needs to be heard, as well as that of partners, mothers and fathers. Show our support

Soldiers and veterans need our support, but their families do too. Something else that should be incorporated into the tradition of military commemoration, is increasing support for the mental health needs of soldiers when they return home. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a relatively new term, but it’s not a new illness and its designation comes too late for generations of soldiers and families who suffered without help. We have a responsibility to look after the people who fight for us, so let’s support them wholly during Friday’s service and after as well.

A little family food for thought to ponder

I

headed to A&W to have a quick bite after work the other day and as I sat there enjoying an uncle burger I couldn’t stop thinking about my niece. She’d just come home to attend a conference and her folks (my brother and sister-in-law) had invited me to drop by on the weekend. I don’t get to see her that often anymore, so it’s always great when she rolls into town. With her so much on my mind though, suddenly the uncle burger started to look a little lonely. I figured I should get a niece burger, too, to make it feel better. So I went back up to the counter. Well, you could see the disappointment on my uncle burger’s face when I returned empty-handed. Alas, there is no niece burger on the menu. As it turns out, it was on omen of inexplicably absent relative burgers to come. Take the nephew burger, for example. While I was

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY going to be visiting with my niece, the plan was to Skype my nephew, her brother, who won’t be back in Toronto until July. I was really looking forward to that call, until I scanned the menu again and discovered another glaring omission. How was I going to explain to him that there was no nephew burger, either? What was just as perplexing is that there was no aunt burger either. I thought the protocol in all matters was ladies first. Besides, a niece burger and a nephew burger need an aunt burger as much as an uncle burger, don’t they? Now, in fairness to A&W, plenty of family members are celebrated. There’s a poppa burger, mama burger and baby burger. There is also a grandpa burger, teen burger and buddy burger, too. There

used to be a grandma burger once upon a time. Ditto for baby burger twins. But alas, a good chunk of the family tree can’t be found. There’s no brother burger or sister burger, nor is there a brother-in-law burger or sister-in-law burger. I didn’t dare tell any of this to my sister-in-law. Not only is there’s no sister-inlaw burger, sister burger or aunt burger, heck, there’s not even a significant other burger. She can’t catch a break. She gets the mama burger. Period. End of meal. It just doesn’t seem fair. You also can’t get a godfather burger, godmother burger or godchild burger. I suppose because there is an uncle burger there could be a goduncle burger one day, but given there’s no aunt burger or auntie burger I wouldn’t count on seeing a godaunt burger or godauntie burger anytime soon if I were you. There’s also no boyfriend

burger or girlfriend burger to speak of and sadly no fiancé burger or fiancée burger either, I’m afraid. So when your niece marries her fiancé or your nephew marries his fiancée, if you drop by to pick up either a nephew-in-law burger or a niece-in-law burger you’re going to be out of luck. Surprisingly, all this worry over missing relative burgers had me working up an appetite again. So I went up to the counter to order one last burger for the road. “Another uncle burger, mister?” the cashier asked. “Actually, I kinda had my heart set on a second cousin, once removed burger, please. Twice removed, if it’s not too much trouble.” “One uncle burger it is, coming right up.” Jamie Wayne is a lifelong columnist, who takes writing very seriously. The topics? Not so much. Cutting Cravings and Nighttime Eating ….Naturally! As a nutritionist who has practiced in the weight loss world for over a decade, I have seen so many clients make the classic weight loss error - they start their day off well only not to finish it off as well. In other words, they eat a healthy breakfast and a balanced lunch, yet – the wheels tend to fall off the nutritional wagon at 3pm and on and food cravings/ sugar binges occur. What I can tell you for sure is that for weight loss purposes, you must finish your day off as well as you start it. However, if you do crave sweets in the afternoon or after dinner, trust me, this is not a sign that you are weak. Intense cravings are often a sign that your are “biochemically

off” and are bouncing around your blood sugars (i.e. from eating too many refined flours or sugars). It is also human nature that when stressed, tired, bored, emotional – we crave sweet! In order to break the cycle of sweet cravings and feel more in control, simply follow the tips below;

 Stay hydrated by drinking

water with lemon and/or sweet herbal teas to satisfy your craving.

 Opt for 2 chocolaty Skinny-

chews. Skinnychews are decadent chews that are naturally sweetened, low in calories and contain 2 grams of inulin

fiber per chew. Long lasting in your mouth and perfect for hunger and cravings (www.drjoey.com)!

 Do not go hungry. Make

sure to have a protein at meals to fill you up. I recommend eating a hard-boiled egg, 2-3 slices of turkey or chicken, ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt or a water based protein smoothie helps tremendously.

 Keep cut up watermelon in

your fridge as a low calorie way to cut cravings naturally.

 Avoid foods that are high

on the glycemic index such as refined flours and sugars

(cookies, crackers, bagels etc.). These foods will bounce around blood sugar and will heighten cravings.

 When a craving hits, distract

eating “off” in the afternoon and evening thereby helping you lose weight, boost energy and feel your very best….naturally. Courtesy of www.drjoey.com

yourself for 10-15 min. by cleaning the house, filing those papers, playing ball with your kids, walking your pet, or running a fun errand with your spouse. The craving will soon pass!

 Get Your ZZZ’s. Sleep depri-

vation and fatigue often lead to sugar and carbohydrate cravings.

By following the tips above, you will soon be able to avoid

Ford’s rehab helping voters

I

t was not so very long ago that Mayor Rob Ford longed to be anywhere but in the bosom of his constituents — at least when it came to the observation of Canada Day July 1. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, our mayor would make a bee-line for his family’s cottage rather than wave a flag in Toronto and coincidentally march in the Pride Parade. Not so in 2014. In an interview from the facility where he is undergoing therapy for alcohol addiction, Mayor Ford declared this week he’ll be back in Toronto for July 1. At that point, he’ll attend Canada Day celebrations and take his re-election campaign out of the holding pattern it’s been in since April 30. He told The Toronto Sun he’s a changed man, and is ready to make some amends for all the wrong he’s done us. And of course he wants to run for another term as

david nickle the city mayor of the biggest city in Canada. When that happens, I suppose we’ll all have to contend with him. In the meantime, Toronto has another month, nearly, to appreciate our own bout of rehab. Think about it: for just over a month, we’ve been able to spend most of our time doing what people ought to during an election: considering what sort of city we’d like to be in, and worrying over the management of the one we’ve got. Even when the talk’s gotten rough among mayoral candidates, it’s been measured and thoughtful and respectful. That’s been the case in matters of governance, too. We’re having a provincial election without, so far, a single parade led by Rob and Doug Ford.

It is almost peaceful in Toronto. And it may well stay that way. When Rob Ford returns to his titular post as mayor, there will be just two more council meetings before the municipal election campaign starts in earnest. The serious campaigns — which is to say, the ones that didn’t take a break to dry out in cottage country — will be organized, and funded, and by summer’s end consolidating their presence and support, their platforms mostly unveiled. The electorate, having been schooled in such for the past few months, will be ready for a serious civic talk. All of which is to say, going into the election, we should be in good shape: rehab, if not for our mayor then at least for our damaged city politick, having worked its wonders.

THE DAVENPORT RIDING has an estimated population of 102,360, and is bounded roughly by Eglinton Avenue West to the north, Ossington Avenue to the east, the CN railway to the west, and Queen Street West to the south. The riding was established in 1999 drawing from the Oakwood, Dovercourt, Parkdale, High Park-Swansea and a small part of York South neighbourhoods. Since October 2011, the riding – one of the most culturally diverse in the province – has been represented by NDP MPP Jonah Schein.

Tell us about one local issue you plan to champion as MPP.

2

What would you do as MPP to improve local transit?

3

Some of Davenport’s constituents face economic challenges. What would you do to help improve their standard of living?

4

Tell us about your background and qualifications.

■ High-quality, affordable child care is important to Davenport families. That’s why I’m disappointed that the NDP blocked our legislation to modernize the child care system and opposed the recent budget, which would have boosted the wages of child care workers and increased child care funding. I am committed to building on the government’s record of increasing Toronto’s child care funding by 70% and protecting full-day kindergarten, which is saving families about $6,500 annually.

■ At every opportunity I have fought for clean, electrified transit. I was so pleased to see funding for electrification of the Union Pearson Express and the entire GO Transit system in the recent budget – and so disappointed to see the NDP oppose it. In addition, as part of a $5.5-billion investment in transit, Liberals would create a GO Regional Express Rail stop in Liberty Village, which would substantially reduce overcrowding on the Queen streetcar.

■ I support policies that invest in

■ I was born in Portugal and moved

■ Creating jobs in Davenport and across the province is a key priority for me and the NDP. One in two jobs in the GTA is precarious, short-term work with no benefits. Youth unemployment is the highest in the country. New Democrats will create jobs by tying tax credits to job creation and investment in Ontario manufacturing. New Democrats will also raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour and peg it to inflation.

■ I will prioritize transit investments

■ We need to make Ontario a fairer place to live, which means investing in our public services. New Democrats will invest an additional $100 million in child care to keep licensed spaces open. Since the Liberal government approved hydro and natural gas rate increases of over 30 per cent, constituents have contacted me worried about how they will make ends meet. New Democrats will reduce electricity bills and take the HST off of home heating.

■ I grew up in West Toronto and

■ As an MPP, I would fight for government programs that help people in need. The Green Party stands for raising taxes to North American standards on corporations and polluters to balance the budget. We would not balance the budget on the backs of the poor or agree to any budget that did so. I would also ensure that my office was always open to my constituents and they would have direct access to me to help them in any way possible.

■ I worked as a criminal lawyer for 10 years in the trial and appeal courts in Toronto and the GTA and helped people from every part of the city parents, teenagers, and others who often struggled with serious personal and family issues. I also worked with judges, court officers, court reporters, police officers, and Crown attorneys. I came to see that we are all invested in the same issues, the same future. I am deeply attached to our community and have a strong affinity for public policy.

enport is to be connected north and south, east and west, with the rest of Toronto by rapid transit. I’d champion the idea of converting GO/CN lines on the north and south corridors into commuter lines with trains running throughout the day and newly built stations up and down the riding. I’d also insist on a timeline to convert the airport fixed link into an electrical line now, not some vague promise to do so in the unknown future.

Lan Daniel (Conservative) | 647-763-2569 | www.davenport.ontariopc.com

that make sense and use fair ways to pay for them. The NDP is the only party that has prioritized the electrification of the Air Rail Link. Electric trains will allow for more stops along the route to serve our communities and integrate with our existing transit network. The NDP is also the only party that believes corporations should pay their fair share through an increase to the corporate tax rate and closing tax loopholes.

dedicated revenue source by way of a congestion tax, carbon tax, or road tolls. I’m talking about a closed loop of revenue solely dedicated to transit. It’s possible to build fully functional neighbourhood stations at places like Rogers, St. Clair West, Dupont, Dundas West, College, and Queen.

people and will fight for good-paying jobs. In addition to job-creating investments in new infrastructure, Liberals will create more jobs with a $2.5-billion jobs and prosperity fund. We are also increasing the minimum wage to $11/hour and will tie future increases to inflation. We need to help more young people get into the job market, which is why our new Youth Jobs Strategy will create 30,000 new jobs for youth.

with my family to Davenport in 1970. I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 15 years, where I saw how health care improved under the Liberal government. My husband and I have two young boys enrolled in our world-class publicly funded schools. I am active in the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business & Professionals, the Greater Toronto Business Association and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Toronto.

have worked for many years in the Davenport community as a teacher, social worker, and community organizer. I believe that politics should be about our communities and for our communities. I’ve been honoured to represent Davenport for the past three years as your MPP and advocate on issues that matter to you. I hope you will allow me to continue to do so.

St. Paul’s was home to 116,463 residents according to 2011 census data and is bounded roughly by Eglinton and Broadway avenues to the north, the CP rail tracks and Moore Avenue to the south, Dufferin Street and Winona Drive to the west and Bayview Avenue to the east. It has been Liberal since it was formed in 1999. Liberal Eric Hoskins has represented St. Paul’s since 2009, winning a byelection. In addition to candidates from the big four parties, Libertarian John Kittredge and Freedom Party candidate Mike Rita are running in the upcoming provincial election.

With many construction projects planned for the riding, what say should the Ontario Municipal Board have on local development?

4

Tell us about your background and qualifications.

■ I think one of the biggest issues affecting St. Paul’s is the cost of energy. I’ve spoken to residents and businesses all over the riding, and they’ve had enough of high electricity bills. The current government has wasted over a billion dollars cancelling gas plants, and under the Liberal plan bills would increase even more, by up to $700/year for an average family. This is simply unacceptable, and the residents of St. Paul’s deserve better.

■ Transit is a major plank of the

■ When it comes to local developments, I think that the OMB is an important tool for balancing concerns of individual citizens in St. Paul’s. It is important, however, for cities to be able to decide for themselves where future growth will go – any intensification demands in provincial planning should not override local decision making.

■ When it comes to experience, I

■ Tenant Rights and Affordable Housing. Around 60 per cent of St. Paul’s residents live in apartments and condos. As the MPP for St. Paul’s I have sent a tenant guide to all residents every year since 2009, which outlines their rights. If re-elected, I will work to ensure that aboveguideline increases are more transparent and fair. We will also continue our review of the Condo Act to better protect condo owners and renters.

■ We know for Ontario to compete

globally we must move our people and goods faster and more efficiently. It is also a quality of life issue, so people can get home to their families faster. This is why we are investing $15 billion for transit in the GTHA, including the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. To grow our economy we know improvements to transit must be done. In addition, we are completing the Spadina subway extension, as well as the Union Pearson Link as part of the Big Move to get people home to their families faster.

■ In 2006, the Liberal government passed the City of Toronto Act, which gave Toronto the power to take more control over local planning issues. The Act allows for Toronto to create a local appeals board, which can take 60 per cent of the cases away from the OMB and have the applications decided at the local level. I will work with my colleagues to introduce new land use legislation that will make it mandatory for developers to consult with community groups and municipalities, and to have a citizen consultation process when developing their official plans.

■ First elected as MPP for St. Paul’s in 2009, I am a humanitarian, family doctor, husband and father – and a proud Ontarian. I currently serve as Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment. Previously, I served as Ontario’s Minister of Children and Youth Services, and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. Before entering politics, I practiced family medicine in downtown Toronto. I co-founded the international charity, War Child Canada, with my wife, Dr. Samantha Nutt.

■ With streetcars, buses and sub-

■ It’s been proven that the only things that reduce gridlock are congestion charges, and increasing the capacity of transit. So, I would implement dedicated revenue tools such as congestion charges, gas taxes and parking fees, to raise $3 billion a year to build and operate transit in communities across Ontario. My personal dream is to make transit free to ride. I’d love to be in a city where everyone could hop on and off streetcars and subways any time they want. I’d love bike lanes on every road too.

■ I’ve heard about the OMB interfering with local decisions to side with developers who won’t have to live with the consequences. Which isn’t good. I highly value heritage buildings and green space and livable, walkable communities. I would make sure the OMB can’t ruin neighbourhoods. On the other hand, I seem to have read a bit lately about how the OMB tries to make rational decisions in the greater interest. I’d have to look more into this to see if it’s true.

■ For my day job, I’m a Senior Copywriter at Canada’s top ad agency. I’m also an actor, cartoonist, singer/ songwriter, stand-up comedian and radio personality. I’m a member of the Green Party of Ontario Shadow Cabinet, responsible for Consumer Services. When I’m walking around the city, I pick up litter and ask idlers to shut off their engines. I invite readers to follow my entertaining personal profile on Facebook so they can see that I’m an open book, and that I’m genuine about wanting to make Ontario better.

ways running through our riding, transit affects St. Paul’s as much or more than anywhere. I’d love to see more clean, green ways of getting around, and even more ways to walk around. And if I could add even more green space, that would be amazing. If we focus on transit, parks, local schools and small business, St. Paul’s can be even more of an example of the very best a city can be.

PC platform. We know that transit needs improvement, and we are the only party with a cohesive, realistic and affordable plan. For St. Paul’s, this would mean easing congestion on our existing subway lines, and ensuring that residents get where they need to be without delay.

Community groups have already started using the space including local dance groups, Mckintosh noted. But youth and young adults like Delano Smith are the main beneficiaries of the new UrbanArts location. “This space has really become my home,” said Smith, 23, who started coming out to UrbanArts about four years ago at its first location on John Street in Weston, which still offers some programming. “The people here have become my family.” With aspirations of becoming a sound engineer and producer, Smith has been able to show what he can offer using the new music studio. “This space is better,” said Smith, adding it’s also much bigger. “Now I can bring more people.” For more information about UrbanArts, visit www. urbanartstoronto.org

Kenya’s Top Safari Spots Maasai Mara National Reserve

Amboseli National Park

The birthplace of the quintessential safari experience, the Mara is famous for its population of big cats and the great wildebeest migration that takes place between July and October.

Amboseli National Park is the best place to catch a glimpse of free-ranging elephants and offers tantalizing views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Be sure to spend some time trekking up Observation Hill, whose peak gives up an incredible overall panoramic view of the park.

Lake Nakuru National Park Nestled into the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a bird lover’s mecca where flocks of blushing pink flamingoes are the resident celebrities, and the park also serves as one of the first national rhinoceros sanctuaries.

transit rides on new streetcars wPublic To drum up excitement for its new streetcar fleet, the TTC is organizing a public ride on one of the new vehicles next week. Riders must correctly answer a steetcar-related trivia question (sample question: how many streetcar routes does the TTC have? answer: 11) to get a seat on the ride, scheduled for Wednesday, June 11. Questions are posted via the twitter account @ StreetcarTO and the first person to respond correctly wins. Meanwhile, one of the new Bombardier streetcars recently arrived in Toronto. A media ride on the new vehicle is set for this week. The new fleet will begin service on the 510 Spadina line on Aug. 31. averts strike of GO bus operators wDeal
