Hillcrest Village Business Improvement Area (BIA) is hoping to attract visitors to its section of St. Clair Avenue with a wine tasting event Saturday. St. Clair Uncorked will run along St. Clair from Christie Street to Winona Drive, where visitors are encouraged to move from store to store to sample wines, said Anne Marie Cole of the Hillcrest Village BIA. “I had this idea we should have a wine event because there are a lot of restaurants, and a lot of people who like wine in the neighbourhood,” Cole said. “It’s not something that’s really been done on St. Clair. My mandate is to generate activity on St. Clair and plan to continue (St. Clair Uncorked) next year. We wanted to create an event not just for the restaurants’ benefit, but to bring more traffic to St. Clair West. It made sense >>>WINE, page 2

Wyatt’s Cup supports brain cancer research Tennis tourney set for Saturday JEAN KO DIN jkodin@insidetoronto.com The York Weston Tennis Club (YWTC) is organizing a recreational tennis tournament on Saturday in celebration of the club’s newly resurfaced courts. The Wyatt Cup tournament was created in honour of Wyatt Pellew, a club member who died of brain cancer in January 2003. “The idea is to have a friendly game and remember Wyatt,” said Cathy Brown, YWTC social chair and co-organizer of the tournament. “He was the kind of person who would be playing in one court and giving instructions from a couple of courts over.” Brown said Pellew was a beloved member of the club who loved to play tennis and visited the club regularly until he had surgery. Since his death at the age of 48, Pellew’s family has maintained close ties with the club. Last year, the family donated funds to pay for the new acrylic top for the tennis courts. “The city paid for most of the resurfacing, but we had to pay for that final layer,” said Brown. Pellew’s extended family will be participating with the community in a round-robin tournament that will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will also have barbecue, drinks and raffles. Entrance fee for the event is a minimum donation of $5. Proceeds will be directed to brain cancer research at Princess Margaret Hospital’s Gerry & Nancy Pencer Brain Tumor Centre.

Pan Am Path extension opens in York Local dignitaries held a ribboncutting ceremony in Cruickshank Park Saturday to officially launch the first completed section of the Pan Am Path, a proposed legacy project of the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata and the Friends of Pan Am Path organization cut the ribbon to open the 84-kilometre continuous path made for walking, running and cycling. “The Pan Am Path aims to unite the downtown core and the inner suburbs through the power of art, sport and culture,” said Brent Chamberlain, chair of the Friends of the Pan Am Path, in a statement. “We’re excited to celebrate this small step forward with UrbanArts and Jane’s Walk in Weston-Mount Dennis.” Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly added the Pan Am Path is a “perfect example of the celebration, investment and legacy that the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games will bring to Toronto.” The route, which will connect Toronto from Brampton to Pickering, lies on existing trails and pathways and additional work is underway to add connections and signage to provide a recreation and transportation route that will serve as a functional connection to various Pan Am Games venues next summer. The Pan Am Path will also

Allen Road northbound to remain open for Crosstown construction RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Metrolinx is backing off a proposal to close off northbound access to Allen Road from Eglinton Avenue West to aid construction of the Crosstown LRT. The provincial planning agency estimates it could have shaved some four months off its two-year timetable for construction of the Crosstown’s 6.5-kilometre western tunnel between Black Creek Drive and Yonge Street by closing off Allen at Eglinton.
• Live entertainment • Children’s activities • Food • Community organization displays
However, a recent traffic study undertaken by Metrolinx that was requested by the city showed Eglinton car volumes have decreased by 60 per cent due to the Crosstown construction. That and the fact the city has plans to commence road resurfacing work on nearby Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue next year means an extended closure of Allen is no longer worthwhile to pursue, said Metrolinx spokesperson Jamie Robinson. “This kind of benefit would be outweighed by the impacts resulting from a (closure) of Allen Road
northbound, on the local community and commuters,” said Robinson, Metrolinx’s director of community relations for the Crosstown project. Closing off Allen would have allowed for the expansion of a staging area for the transportation of materials to the tunnel-site, which is currently located in the east-parking lot of Eglinton West station. Currently, motorists using the Allen are limited to one lane in either direction at Eglinton and also cannot access the northbound right turn lane.
Tuesday, July 1, 2014 7pm Weston Lions Park (2125 Lawrence Avene West)
Robinson said the Allen closure proposal was also floated as a way to address safety concerns for pedestrians making use of the intersection, as well as reduce the impact on traffic congestion. Instead, he said Metrolinx will coordinate the installation of additional pedestrian “detours.” While Robinson said no further traffic modifications are under consideration for Allen and Eglinton at the moment, he didn’t rule them out for the future. “It is important to note that work is always being shifted in the area.”

Much to celebrate this Canada Day
Write us
T
orontonians have much to celebrate on Canada Day. We have a front row seat when it comes to witnessing the amazing cultural diversity on display in our communities. For example, there’s the ongoing World Cup of Soccer, where teams from 32 countries (each with an identifiable fan base in the city), are competing for the privilege of being crowned world champion. You can see the flags flying from homes, businesses and vehicles. You can see people gathered around televisions to watch the games. And you can definitely see and hear the jubilant celebrations when a team secures victory. Canada is a nation of immigrants. And nowhere else is this country’s diversity as visible as it is in Toronto, where nearly half of the population first learned a language other than English at home. We went to a citizenship cerour view emony and got the perspective of a number of new Canadians, North York’s Clive New citizens including Townsend, who spoke of the strengthen “privilege” citizenship granted him. Toronto In this country, we have much to be thankful for. Rights that we normally take for granted can be harder to secure elsewhere. So in honour of Canada Day, we’d like to throw out a couple of challenges. To the new Canadian: in the coming months, make an effort to find out more about your new community and city and all it has to offer. The summer season is a wonderful time to do this. There are plenty of places, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Centre, the CN Tower or Fort York, to visit and get a sense of the community’s history and characteristics. To the more deeply rooted Torontonian: use your time this summer to attend a couple of cultural events with a goal of finding out more about that particular culture and what it brings to our city. Again, there are plenty of options to choose from, including such festivals as Salsa on St. Clair, Taste of the Danforth, and Scotiabank Caribana. What better way to evolve as a community? As newer immigrants become more comfortable in their new home, and the more deeply-rooted citizens gain a greater understanding of the diverse cultures that make up this city, one of Toronto’s strengths – its multiculturalism – will get even stronger. Happy Canada Day, everyone.

The unsung stars of the beautiful game
T
he Netherlands’ opportunistic Robin van Persie, Germany’s legendary Miroslav Klose, Argentina’s incomparable Lionel Messi. These are just a few of the many stars glittering on the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But from where I sit – in front of the tube in a bar or on the couch – the coterie of engaging British football announcers are doing just as much to elevate interest in the beautiful game. Their elegant play-byplay brings tears to the eyes. The following are a few of the standard cliches we typically hear while tuning in to hockey, basketball or baseball telecasts, followed by the mellifluous equivalents we’re treated to during the World Cup. 1. They’re really stinking
jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY out the joint today. They are delivering a truly most unflattering performance. 2. Boy, did he ever get caught with his pants down. He paid dearly for his inopportune moment of uncertainty. 3. Talk about running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The lads currently appear to be a trifle disjointed out there. 4. Nobody, and I mean nobody, on the team has been coming back all day. The entire side is showing utter disdain for its defensive responsibilities. 5. The game has slowed to an agonizing crawl. Play has clearly taken on a decidedly pedestrian nature.
6. They almost choked. They barely avoided what would have been an embarrassing self-inflicted trauma. 7. Nice shot. It was an exquisite ball. 8. Hard shot. He left-footed it with venom. 9. Good pass. It was an elegant ball in. 10. Dumb pass. It was a rather curious cross. 11. He hit the post. He glanced one off the woodwork. 12. He’s a proven goalscorer. He’s resolute with the last ball. 13. He’s the quarterback of their offence. He’s the technical coordinator of their forward thrust. 14. Neither team appeared even remotely interested today. It was clearly a lacklustre effort, completely
devoid of enthusiasm. 15. Nobody expected them to have a chance against such a heavy favourite. They put on a truly marvelous display that belies their modest pedigree. 16. They really blew it. Big time. They have nobody to blame but themselves. Alas, they were obliging architects of their own misfortune. 17. Are you kidding me? What was the referee thinking? A child of four could tell that was a blatant dive. That yellow card was an emphatically dubious call. The contact was negligible. The apparently aspiring thespian clearly made a meal of it. El-Farouk Khaki, a Toronto lawyer and downtown resident, said his family fled Tanzania in the 1970s among thousands of East Indians who claimed asylum in Canada and the U.K. after being forced out of their homeland. The UN estimates there were about 10.4 million refugees of concern last year. Another 4.8 million are looked after in some 60 camps in the Middle East. Canada accepts about 15,000 refugees yearly. ormer Jamaican soldier Clive Townsend proudly saluted Citizenship Judge Karen McMillan as he was sworn in as a new Canadian with 103 others just days before our country’s 147th birthday on Tuesday, July 1. “It is a privilege to become a Canadian,” said the North York resident after the ceremony. “I have been waiting a long time for this dream to come true.” An ecstatic Townsend, 50, said his first task is to register to vote. “I went to vote in the provincial election (June 12) and I could not because I am not Canadian,” he said. “I will be first in line to vote in the mayoral election in October.” Townsend moved to Toronto from Jamaica in 1995 and plans to sponsor to Canada members of his family. “This document gives me privilege,” Townsend said of his Certificate of Citizenship. “I have been waiting for a long time to become a citizen of this great country.” He said this Canada Day will be “even more special” as he is a citizen. Kulwant Kaur, and her son, Sukhjinder, 20, also of North York, were all smiles as they recited their Oaths of Citizenship. “My son will have a great future here with more opportunities than I had,” Kaur beamed. “We are very excited about our lives in Canada.” She moved here with her family from India about 20-years ago and never took out citizenship. “I am so very proud,” she said. “Now we can vote and have better job opportunities.” Many of the new citizens fled violent or war-torn countries and were granted asylum in Canada. Lara, 26, who lives in downtown Toronto and did not want her last name used, said her parents fled Lebanon five years ago due

to the violence. “We wanted to live somewhere that is peaceful and stable,” Lara explained. “Our family have been through a lot and we wanted someplace safe.” She plans on applying for a passport and public service job, for both of which she has to be a citizen. Marcia Collins, who recently moved from
Etobicoke to Mississauga, praised Canada as a great place to raise a family. “This is a wonderful country to be a citizen of,” said Collins, who came here from Jamaica. “Being a citizen means that I now have a voice and can vote.” Judge McMillan urged the new Canadians to vote and exercise their responsibilities. “Take pride in the
Oath and always defend the Canadian way of life,” she said. Ceremony guest Rana Khan, of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), reminded the new Canadians that June 20 was declared World Refugee Day, to commemorate the plight of refugees. “You have picked a great country
to call home,” Khan said. “Toronto and Canada have always been generous hosts for refugees fleeing from conflicts around the world.” She said events were planned throughout Canada to mark the special day. A celebration at Toronto’s Daniel’s Spectrum in Regent Park featured speak-

On November 1, 2013, Expert Mortgage launched the “85Alive” program in Ontario. The concept was simple: as long as you had a pulse, Expert Mortgage would provide you with a home equity loan, up to 85 per cent of the value of your property. No job required. Bad credit, OK. The reason why Expert Mortgage could offer a “no questions asked” lending program, while the major banks could not, is that they represent over 200 private lenders who lend strictly on property value. These subprime lenders specialize in mortgage clients who have had some bad luck, and need a helping hand until they get back on their feet. The program has been so successful that Expert Mortgage can barely keep up with the volume of calls. To help fund this unexpectedly large number of borrowers, it has partnered up with dozens more private lenders.
Licensed Mortgage Agent Andre Ouimet, Expert Mortgage’s “85-Alive” representative for the GTA Region, says, “We’re seeing mostly homeowners behind on mortgage and property taxes. The banks are refusing to restructure their loans. Many of these people have lost jobs due to the bad economy... or they’re self-employed. Unless you are a perfect applicant, the bank doesn’t want to talk to you.” But not everyone condones Expert Mortgage’s easy lending criteria. A local real estate agent with 25 years of experience, who has asked to remain anonymous, says, “When this market turns down, it’s going to get ugly! It’s utter financial suicide for Expert Mortgage to be giving money away so easily to clients without the ability to make payments. I’d be surprised if they’re still in business five years from now.”
on how she plans on making payments on her mortgage when she has no income, Anita responds, “We were four months behind on our mortgage and they saved our house. My husband has been unemployed for nine months. He won’t be unemployed forever. We used the 85-Alive loan to pay off all our debts. We also had $25,000 left over that we put in the bank for emergencies. And to make life easy, they worked it out so we have no mortgage payments for 12 months.” For more details on the ”85Alive” program, contact Andre Ouimet, www.gtaemergency.ca, 647-700-9014.
Nonetheless, homeownerslike Anita P. don’t see a problem with the program. When questioned

School board delays controversial partnership with the Confucius Institute CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com
www.yorkguardian.com CONSUMER FEATURE
A controversial partnership between the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Confucius Institute has been delayed so trustees and board staff can review the issue further. Dozens of protesters
Staying cool when it’s hot outside It’s been a long, cold winter and we’ve waited months for the warm weather to arrive. Finally, summer’s here. And just as winter’s extreme cold affects those who are vulnerable, so does summer’s extreme heat. The warmer weather affects vulnerable populations more quickly than others and for these reasons, it’s important to make sure that your loved ones are safe. Younger children, babies and seniors are at particular risk when the temperatures rise. When summer temperatures soar beyond safe levels, the City of Toronto will issue a “Heat Alert.” These advisories are reminders for people – particularly those who are especially vulnerable, to take special care when the mercury soars. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre monitors these alerts and are always available to answer questions and provide support wherever needed. Those who may have an increased risk during the hot weather include: • Older adults, infants and young children • People with chronic illnesses, such as heart or respiratory conditions • People who work or exercise outside • People who live alone • Even folks without air conditioning or adequate air circulation Seniors have particular risks in the summer. These include the following, including descriptions of each: • Sun Burn: Marked by pink or red skin that feels warm or hot to the touch • Heat Exhaustion: Signs include sweating, cool moist skin, high body temperature, weak pulse, possibly fainting and vomiting
• Heat Stroke: Symptoms include a high body temperature and any of the following: weakness, confusion, hot, dry, flushed skin, fast pulse, headache and dizziness If there are people in your life, such as grandparents, friends, or neighbours who may be at risk for heat-related health issues, make sure to check on them regularly during the summer months. Where appropriate, support them or help them make provisions for managing in the heat. A friendly phone call, an email or visit to see how they’re doing will allow you the peace of mind that your loved one is okay. You can also create a hot weather protection plan for them to assure that they’re prepared for the heat. As part of the plan, make sure to address the following: • The location of the closest airconditioned place (shopping centre, library, community centre, etc.) or cooling centre • Knowing the signs and the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke • Having a backup support system, friend or caregiver who can help in case of an emergency.
CAR SAFETY
We’re always being remind-
ed not to leave our pets and children in the car when it’s hot. The same rule applies to anyone, especially seniors. NEVER leave a person or pet in an unattended car.
WHEN AN ALERT IS DECLARED, TAKE ACTION: Encourage those at risk to visit the cool room in their building, or cool public places such as malls, community centres, and libraries, and regularly check on them to make sure they’re managing. Here are some simple tips for seniors to help them cope with the heat: • Encourage them to drink plenty of fluids especially water • Limit activities so that they don’t over-exert themselves • Visit air conditioned spaces, such as malls, shopping centres and the city operated cooling centres • Call for help if they don’t feel well, i.e., if they become ill, faint, have trouble breathing or feel confused or disoriented.
—Josie Barbita Director, Client Services Toronto Central CCAC www.healthcareathome.ca/ torontocentral
came out to the last regular board meeting of the school year June 18 with placards, urging trustees to vote against implementing curriculum by the Chinese governmentsponsored institute. While the idea of having the partnership to promote the Chinese language and culture in public schools dates back several years, some trustees said they’ve been getting new information and hundreds of emails only recently about concerns with the Confucius Institute. “I’m getting 200 emails a day by desperate people who think we’re embarking on totally the wrong road,” said Irene Atkinson, trustee for Parkdale-High Park, asking that the contract be completely dissolved. Most trustees supported the motion that night for “activities and the use of resources connected to the Confucius Institute be delayed until trustees and staff are able to both investigate and review information on the institute.”
THERESE
“I think we’ve all been ambushed with this,” said Chris Tonks, York SouthWeston trustee, noting both sides have bombarded the board with information and a vote to delay will allow for a more fulsome discussion on the issue. “There should be due process and attention given to this matter.” Critics of the institute claim that prospective teachers are assessed for their political ideological beliefs and materials taught are censored to not include such topics as Tibet and Tiananmen Square. “We have direct information the Confucius Institute has discriminated against teachers they’ve hired,” said Joel Chipkar, representing a group called Say No to CI Parents. He also cited reports from CSIS, claiming the institute is an organization used for “spreading propaganda and building soft power.” But supporters of the Confucius Institute refute those claims, saying many of the fears are unfounded.
“I understand their fears, but they don’t know exactly what is being taught,” said Jeff Yang, who came out to the meeting in support of the partnership. “I feel the Confucius Institute offers Canadians an opportunity to learn Chinese and the Chinese culture.” Howard Kaplan, trustee representing York Centre, said he’d like to see the partnership with the institute move forward. “It is a good agreement,” said Kaplan, expressing his confidence with board staff to have negotiated a contract that would be suitable for TDSB students. “It will be our staff that will be teaching. It will be our material from our resources that we asked for. These will be vetted. These are tailored for our students.” All but two trustees voted in favour of the motion to delay implementation of the partnership.

Soknacki’s idea a worthwhile risk Really, it is a good thing for a city, every three to four years to have a good long mayoral race. And not just because it’s healthy to change things at the top every once in awhile. Particularly in Toronto’s 10-month marathons, it lets us air out some novel and occasionally useful and farfetched ideas on how the city ought to be shaped. In 2010, for instance, Rocco Rossi suggested that Toronto should have a mechanism for recalling a bad mayor. Rossi didn’t even make it to voting day, his support was so low – but there are probably a binding-petitions-worth of people in Toronto right now who wish they had something like that over the past year. This year, mayoral candidate David Soknacki is on his way to fulfilling that role. Consistently low in public opinion polls, the former city councillor from Scarborough has been leading when it comes to ideas.
david nickle the city His first big idea, to scrap the Scarborough subway and build an LRT in its place, was soon picked up by rival Olivia Chow. His latest, to ban onstreet parking on arterial roads in the downtown core, hasn’t yet been picked up by anyone. It’s too bad, because the ban would probably do more to make on-road transportation faster and safer than any number of relief subway lines. Bike lanes wouldn’t be the impediment to car traffic that they are now, because they wouldn’t have to deke around on-street parking spaces and into car lanes. Where bike lanes weren’t appropriate, cars would have at least two lanes in a direction to move, and that would go the same for buses, which might be increased.
And pedestrians would have a safer time crossing mid-block than they do lurching out into traffic from between parked cars. It would also tick off numerous small businesses, and a certain number of motorists who’ve gotten used to parking on the streets and don’t like the multi-level parking garages that Soknacki envisions to replace street parking. That is why it takes a candidate like Soknacki – who at this point, has no carcommuter, small-business support to lose – to bring the notion forward. It’s a good gamble on his part. If the idea catches on with enough other factions in our balkanized electorate, Soknacki could gain enough support to give him a shot at the prize. If not, it is a good, radical idea – one the more established candidates don’t go near.

trip for Hawker Siddley train wFinal One of the TTC’s oldest remaining subway trains made its final trip last week. The Hawker Siddelymanufactured class six train made a final run along the Bloor-Danforth line Friday before being taken out of service for good. First introduced in the late 1980s, The H-6 models were characterized by their brown interiors and orange doors, as well as for having a “privacy seat” that was located away from regular group seating. But they also experienced frequent malfunctions the older they became. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the train will be scrapped for parts. It seems resurfacing roadwork on Lake Shore Boulevard West has finished earlier than expected.
