A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMISTRESS Our school is in its 28th year. We provide all of our students, from 2lh to 14 years, with a strong academic curriculum balanced by art, music, physical education and athletics. This publication will give you a glimpse of all those areas of endeavour and insight into the meaning of our motto, ''Experience Teaches." Staff involvement in the daily lives of our students is exceptional. Our thanks go to the new Yearbook committee ... Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Mason, Mrs. Pittet, Mr. Snow, Mrs. Wood and Miss Rodrigoe. They have worked very hard with this new format. As usual, we have a fine publication which indicates, once more, the excellence of the VMS experience.

FORT YORK Sept. 2, 1614 Dear Champlain, I have met the Huron. I think you should come to this land called Toronto, meaning "meeting place". There are lots of trees for firewood, for canoes and for homes. There is good soil for growing crops. There is fresh water with lots of tasty fish, big and small. I see lots of dear running through the forests. All the sounds of nature are beautiful. The sounds are full of peace and the river and the birds are nice to listen to. I love the sunset and the water because it is so beautiful. I can hear the loons laughing, birds chirping, water bubbling, waves splashing against the shore and animals running through the forest. Fort York 1812 Dear Diary, Today the Yankees attacked on short notice. Who knows what night will bring? I did not know what would happen. At times I felt scared. The fyfe sounded four times today. My oldest son was training. My oldest girl, Alice was afraid for her father. I was afraid for my husband. I have four children. Everyday Alice, May and I do the washing and drying, the cooking and the cleaning. It's a hard life here at Fort York. Victoria Roberts, Grade 3

I'm a boy living in Fort York in 1812. It is hard doing these chores as a little boy because I'm very busy. First, I go to school to get an education so that I can learn to read and write to become an officer. When I come home from school, every day I watch the soldiers do their duties so I can learn their drills. After that, I go get water for the officers and soldiers to drink. Then I go to bed. I live in one room with thirty-two people in it. This room is very crowded. I'm looking forward to becoming an officer so I can have better meals than the soldiers and so I can plan the attacks. CHINATOWN

A good looking bunch enjoying a bite.

Chinatown and Kensington Market Chinatown ... Cars whizzing by, bicycles, just a blur of colour. Store owners yelling out their produce, people talking, some screaming, some of them laughing. And then there are the crowds; people walking by in every direction, going to work, to school, almost anywhere you can think of. Piles of garbage litter the streets, pigeons picking through it, trying to find something to eat. Chinatown, a bustle of noise and confusion. Kensington ... The streets swamped with delivery trucks, pigeons and shoppers. The smell of spices and meats of every kind blends together to make one of the most pleasing smells. I hear loud Jamaican music in my ears as I walk past a store filled with tie-dye shirts. Kensington Market is my favourite place in the city. By Brendan Zwelling Grade 6

Kensington Market Oh! My feet ache and my stomach grumbles as we walk up and down, up and down the streets looking at the houses that are left behind by different cultures. It is very quiet on the side streets and then when you come to a main street noise comes at you like wind. There are cars beeping, people talking and laughing. But everything changes when you go past the bakery. You forget about the noise when the smell enters your nose. You can look in the window and see all the different delicious buns and cakes. But then it's not all like that. There are some places where you have to plug your nose to get past; the smell is so bad. All the different cultures have left behind some kind of land mark and if you go it is very interesting. By Pearce Fallis Grade 6

Chase In The Forest Yikesl Here comes disease. Running, jumping and stepping swiftly over branches I fall like a metereoid hitting a planet. like a glass falling and breaking. I get caught by disease. As I give up my life tag I look all around me; the ground muddy spread with twigs, bushes and fallen trees. The cloudy sky calms me, the smell of pine lifts up to my nose like the smell of pepper and lemon. I spot a yellow ribbon out of the corner of my eye. I'm on her in a flash running through the bushes. The chances of catching her slim. Like the odds of winning roulette three times in a row. The sound of breaking branches fills my ears. I feel the thrill of the chase, like the feel of winning in a race. She reacts quickly and I miss her by a centimeter. She runs off far away. I hear the call, "Game over" I run back to the start like a fisherman who's caught his limit. By joel Garten Grade 6

The Great Hill It was our first period at Dorset. Our whole class was going on a geomorphology hike that would be about a long, treacherous 3.6 km. walk in deep, slushy snow. Suddenly we came to a thin path and beside that a steep hill that seemed to never end with rocks that bounced down into Lake St. Nora. Everybody was clutching on to the rock face on the other side and then Mrs. Dowman slipped and almost went down the hill, but managed to scamper back up onto the path. The ground was very slippery because of the snow and many times Mark, who was in front of me, would almost slip off. It took me hundreds of thundering heart thumping steps to finally let my breath out. "Boom", I collapsed as I and everybody else waited in the open air for the other people to come out of that horrible and dangerous section of the path. But it was still a lot of fun! Survival In The Forest I was running from tree to tree, over logs, looking for food and watching out for predators. I see it! I see food! Mm ... Mm .. it tastes great and water too. Look over there. A skunk, ha, ha, ha, I said. He was hungry too and he wanted to eat me but he can't. Why? I am a deer. But then out of the corner of my eye I saw a wolf. I couldn't move anywhere. I just looked at him, his drooling mouth, sharp pointed teeth. It made me want to scream. Right then I decided to run as fast as I could right around him and into the forest. So I did, and it worked. I found even more tasty food and icy cold water. I saw another deer being chased by a hunter so I called one of my rodent friends and told him to go and bite that stupid human. The whole forest is laughing at this foolish man; I mean who chases after a skunk! All the excitement made my hungry so I looked for some food and sure enough there it was. But it was too high to reach so I asked another of my herbivore friends to help me. It was decent food but I enjoy mushrooms much more than little, tiny plants. Then, I heard it. It was a small fire made by that stupid man. Why would he destroy a whole forest just because he got sprayed by a skunk? Well, out here in the wilderness it's survival of the fittest and only the fittest. By Adam Kohn Grade 6

PETER PAN

My knees bobbed up and down like popcorn popping. It was the scariest tryout I have ever been to. I read my lines in a terrible, squeaky, British accent. I was sweating bullets and almost sprung right out of my shoes. After that calamity I was ready to sing. I stood perfectly straight like a popside stick. I was the only person in the room except for Mrs. Lewis, the unique music teacher. While I was singing '0 Canada', my stomach felt like it was going to burst and all my insides would be out and my outsides would be inside my body. By Mark. Griffiths Grade 6

SKI DAY

This was the only morning I woke up early and excited to go to school because that day was ski day! I jumped out of bed feeling like a man, put some clothes on, brushed my teeth and pushed my dad out the door like a bulldozer. Finally, we made it to school, and all in sight were teachers, students and buses. I knew that ski day was not cancelled. Two hours later, we made it to Snow Valley. I put on any boots in sight, grabbed my skis, and headed to the slopes. I flowed down the hill with the wind flowing in my face. I felt so good that day. I would give up everything to stay there at Snow Valley. Finally, 3:00p.m. came and I was so frustrated, but I had to go. That had been one of the best days of my life. I cannot wait until the next ski day! By Mark Barsoum, Grade 6

ON THE HILL Swish! I scrambled off the ski lift and looked down the hill. It was so big and steep it looked almost like a cliff. I started down the hill slowly and I watched the people beside me zooming down. I felt like a car on the expressway with a flat tire, while cars beside me rushed by, turning and zigzagging all over the hill like inchworms travelling down a trunk. My thigh muscles aching and the pain in my feet great, I neared the bottom of the hill. I started to pick up speed like a ball rolling off the edge of a table and in fright of losing control, I fell to stop myself like a great avalanche stopping. What a hill! By Joel Garten Grade 6

VALENTINE'S DANCE As I struggled through the crowd of people to find her, she was nowhere to be seen. My eyes darted around the gym, like ping-pong balls, and my head turned to and fro in search of her. I started my search again, struggling through the thick jungle of students. My eyes were searching like a leopard on the prowl, when suddenly there she was; like an angel in the mist. I slowly, steadily and cautiously walked up to her. My mind went crazy! I didn't know what to say! When I just blurted out, "Do you want to dance?" my voice was like an earthquake! Hommanal Hommana! As quickly as I had asked her she said, "Sure," her glorious lips shaping the luscious sound of her voice. Joy!. .. By Tim Quek, Grade 6

HUMBER SPRING TRIP 1992

HUMBER ARBORETUM I saw an owl that was staring at me. I learned that the spruce tree was a store because the native people got rope from the roots, medicine and tea from the needles and the branches made beds. I got to snowshoe and to feed the chickadees. It was cold, the trees were bare and the pond was frozen. Not just frozen but covered with snow too. I was really happy at Humber. HUMBER ARBORETUM The owl in the tree was very still. I thought it was paper at first but then I saw it blink so I knew it was real. The thing I saw the most on the owl were the eyes. I liked the bright yellow eyes because they stuck out a lot. I learned the roots of a spruce tree could be used for ropes by the native people to catch an animal or something like that. These are the animals I saw, owl and chickadees. I heard a woodpecker but I did not see it. I fed the chickadees but they did not come to me. I held my hand out straight but had to shut my hand to a fist because it was getting cold. Some came close to me but not on my hand. About eleven of the chickadees came close and I was so mad that none came on my hand. By jenna Greenspan Grade 2

HUMBER ARBORETUM I found a pellet but it was frozen so it was hard to see the bones inside it. At first I thought it was a stone but then I looked closer and saw a bit of fluff on it with little white pieces in it. There were lots of holes in the trees. Some of the people in my group found dead bumble bees under a bee tree. When we were going snow shoeing we were going in a line but everyone got in front of me and I fell down in the snow and the leather fell out of the snowshoe. I learned all the animal tracks that I saw in the snow. I had a lot of fun and I discovered a lot of things. By Claire Dickson Grade 2

BANANA SPUI' MUFFINS Lettie lastima, our kitchen manager, loves children and designed these muffins that kids can help you cook and help you eat. Yield 12 muffins Ingredients 1/2 cup 3/4 cup

unsalted butter sugar eggs pure vanilla extract ripe bananas sour cream, yogurt or buttermilk cake flour baking soda baking powder pinch of salt chocolate chips miniature white marshmallows

Method

I. Preheat oven to 350"F/180"C. Butter 12 muffin tins or line with paper muffin liners. 2. Cream butter with sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add vanilla. 3. Puree bananas with sour cream. Sift cake flour with baking soda, baking powder and salt. 4. Stir banana mixture into creamed butter mixture. Stir in flour just until completely moistened but do not over blend. Stir in chocolate chips. 5. Spoon baner into prepared pans (an ice cream scoop works great!). Press 4 to 6 miniature marshmallows into the tops of each muffin. 6. Bake muffins 25 mmutes or until done. Cool on a rack 5 minutes before removmg from pans.

COOKING WII1l KIDS TIPS • Have patience and plenty of time. If you are stressed out, this is definitely not the right time to cook with kids! • Have fun. You want kids to like cooking and if it seems like a chore you may miss the opportunity for them to be cooking for you one day! • Use cooking as an opportunity to teach kids about math and reading. • Use cooking to teach kids the importance of being organized. Get all the ingredients for a recipe out before you start - that way you'll know if you are missing anything. • If your kids cook with metric at school, let them do it at home too - maybe they can teach you a thing or two too!
