THE YORK SCHOOL (an independent school) 1320 Yonge
Street Toronto, Ontario M4T 1X2
PERSPECTIVE 2005-2006
Printed In Canada
As I write my last contribution to the Perspective, I cannot help but
feel a great sense of pride on the occasion of the 40th year of the York School. From a very small Early Years Programme at Grace Church on the Hill, we have become one of the leading independent schools in Canada with almost 6oo students. Almost 300 of these students are found at our North Campus at Glebe and at 1320 Yonge. At any time of day, you will find the Lower School halls quite busy with classes travelling back and forth to the many specialists in the school. Doors to the classrooms are often open displaying bright and cheery classrooms with students heartily engaged in activities and outside, in the back 40, the sounds of recess fill the air. In short, nothing is static in the Lower School! If you travel up to the EYP, you will also find a hive of activity as those very little children learn by doing and take part in their own Units of Inquiry! Turn the pages of this 2006 yearbook and you find it all there for you to enjoy, now and also forty years on! Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots Head of School 2
The York School is forty And we're all so sporty! So ... how does the yearbook get done? With a lot of hard work And deadlines that lurk, Just read it... you'll have lots of fun! Marilyn Andrews Admissions

The Lower School - EYP to Grade 6 This has been a very exciting year in the Lower School - a year filled with celebrations and important milestones. It was the school's fortieth birthday party this fall, an lBO Primary Years Programme evaluation team visited our school for two days in February, and we will be saying goodbye to Barbara Goodwin-Zeibots at the end of this year as she retires after forty years as Head of The York School. On a day to day basis, the teachers and students were involved in inquiry as their classrooms were turned into places where the human body was studied, scientific inventions were created, children's rights were defended, archeological digs took place, political debates were heated, and the universe was explored. Many classes either began or ended their days with a Community Circle where activities that focused on the Tribes agreements helped the students develop skills to work together in a caring and cooperative environment. Throughout the year, grade one and grade five students enjoyed the time they spent with each other as reading buddies while the grade two and grade six students were actively engaged in writing activities together. Beyond the walls of the classroom, much was happening in the Lower School this year. The Student Council, with elected representatives from each class, was a vital organization under the guidance of Ms. Spencer and Mr. Barry. They met regularly to discuss issues that were voiced in their class meetings and to effect change within the school community. The Junior Development League continued to provide the students with the opportunity to learn new skills and to remain active. For the first time, the grade six students were involved in a leadership programme. Their roles included being morning announcers, team captains, hall monitors, mentors in the primary classrooms, special event planners, and assembly coordinators. Without a doubt, they fulfilled their duties very responsibly and enthusiastically. For years, the Lower School students have been involved in the annual Oochathon to raise money to send children with cancer to summer camp; this year that involvement was strengthened when the grades 4 - 6 students had the chance to spend some time up at Camp Oochigeas. As you look through the pages of the yearbook, you will see much
evidence of the students' learning and their enjoyment in the process. Thank you to the faculty and students for a wonderful 2005/2006 school year. My first year in the Lower School has truly been an enriching experience and I look forward to next year! 18
