The means by which students can learn and communicate are proliferating at a record pace. This year we connected and shared stories through York TV, live streaming of events, photography field trips, Skype sessions, real time peer-editing, art battles and so much more. Despite all of these new ways to get in touch and create memories the hardcover yearbook continues to be a beloved and valued keepsake. There is something special about having a glossy bound book capturing the adventures, accomplishments and experiences had by all during the 2013-2014 year. Whether in the classroom, exploring downtown Toronto, or immersing themselves in cultures across the world, Middle and Senior School students and faculty pushed the boundaries on how information was shared within the school and beyond. Well done to all the students who brought the images on these pages to life and to the faculty and staff who supported them along the way. I hope you enjoy the memories held in this book now and in the future. Thank you to the yearbook staff for putting together this impressive review of the past year at 1320 Yonge Street.

-"Plus c;a change, plus c'est Ia meme chose." Although coined in the mid-nineteenth century, the epigram fittingly applies today. Perhaps by the time that you open up this yearbook in a distant decade to show to your children they will marvel at the paper and the binding, and exclaim: "You lived in an age of books?!" In the meantime, despite all ot'the technological advances that propel us forward into the future, we still capture our memories of a school year in a book of photos, much as they did when the UPlus c;a change" epigram was coming into vogue. And what about you? Have you changed much since your hair was cut in that 2013 style? Do you still listen to the same bands or swoon over the same movie stars? Probably not, but we hope that the essential attributes that we worked so hard to develop in each of you still form a firm foundation. And hopefully, when you look through the pictures, you don't merely see outdated uniforms and hairstyles, but evidence of open-minded, caring, risk taking, balanced, knowledgeable, inquiring, principled, thinking, and reflective communicators. And if you do, I'm sure you'll join me in thanking the entire yearbook team for capturing us as students and staff in a fixed time and place, striving to embrace and engage with the timeless values that underlie the school's mission. Mr. David Hamilton Principal of the Senior School
Middle School life is characterized by personal bests and community engagement within a supportive environment. It is when students develop a sense of self and place, whether it is in homeroom, on the stage, in the gym or catching up in the commons area. The strewn personal items suggest Middle School is their second home. Personal bests include the range of individual developments that showcase character. These include risks taken to grow such as signing up for dog-sledding , trying out for a sport team for the first time, singing on stage in front of a huge audience, debating with strangers and spending time in the cold to solicit change for charity. Other personal bests include notable finishes at the Sterling Hall debating competition, placing on the Gauss math contest, competing as a finalist at the Pinewood Derby or being a member of the championship girls' or boys' basketball teams. These personal bests represent a snapshot of who are students may one day become. Our students engaged in multiple communities that include athletic teams, club teams such as robotics, debating and science Olympics, honor, jazz bands, junior voices and the school musical, 'Once upon a Slipper' - all showcasing our student talent and commitment. Other communities also include those who held a student voice in making the York Middle School a great place, such as the link radio hosts, student council and student buddies. These communities nurture the talent brewing among us. The supportive environment emerged in the many unseen ways of a school day, such as helping a friend with their robot design, loaning a forgotten power cord, making a new friend mid-year and knowing you can reach out to several people with a challenge. These acts are what connect our students to each other and to Middle School. Our students have grown in one short and long school year. A growth marked by risk-taking, integrity, commitment, energy and care for others. On behalf of the Middle School faculty, we are proud of them all! Congratulations to Catherine Paap, Lina Bergstrom and their team for capturing all of the above, and more, within these yearbook pages. To the graduates of 2014- we hope the IB York experience has instilled a curiosity about world communities and a desire to mark your personal best in the years ahead. Best wishes! Ms. Helen Gin Middle School Principal

!love York. I love that you can tell someone .......... that they look like they belong to a certain house but can't quite distinguish why and that our gym is airbrushed to look like a coliseum. I love planning for someone to fake an injury in case a teacher catches us on the elevator, an I remember reminding each other not to leave the change room too early so, they too, could do less than the required laps before gym. I Jove that my teams here can chant "our house our game" and really mean that York feels like home. Deep down, we're all proud that we're Yorkie.

THE
Editor's Dote The task of creating this yearbook has been a privilege. We would like to thank our committee, in particular Andrea Ma, without whom this yearbook would not have been possible. We would also like to thank Ms. Aragona for her encouragement and support throughout the entire process. We hope these pages fondly remind you of the year 2013-2014 for many years to come . •
Thank you, • .fLina Bergstrom and Catherine Paap
