MESSAGE FROM TIM THORSTEINSON CHAIR OF THE BOARD As Chair of the Board of Directors, it is my honour to present the Board’s Annual Report for the 2014-2015 academic year. The York School continues to provide an exceptional academic education for our students. This year in conjunction with the strategic plan, there has been an increased focus on athletics and the social and emotional growth of our children. We are dedicated to fulfilling our mission to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who are engaged citizens of the world. The York School is on solid financial ground and continues to be responsible with the funds raised through tuition and donations. The implementation of the 20/20 strategic plan has given Head of School, Conor Jones, and his Executive team direction and clarity as they plan for the current and long term success of the school.

2

2014-2015 was my first year serving as Chair of The Board. The Board meetings are all positive and generative in nature. As Chair, I also participate in the Finance, Governance, Premises and Advancement committee meetings. I can attest to the hard work of all committee members. I thank these volunteers who give generously of their time and skills to ensure the school is well managed and clearly directed. On behalf of the Board of Directors I thank The York School community, parents and alumni for their ongoing support

and participation in the life of the school. I thank all members of the York Parents Association and the York International Parents Association for their commitment to engaging parents in The York School’s community. Our enrolment numbers remain strong and consistent. Over the past year, a 5-year Strategic Enrolment Management strategy has been developed to ensure the school achieves enrolment targets from 2015-2020. In the first year of implementation, The York School recruited its largest intake since 2011-2012 with 125 new students; this is an 8% increase in new student enrolment compared to 2013-2014. As of June 30, 2015, our overall enrolment is 621 students. The 2014-2015 Annual Fund raised over $375,000. This generosity helped support our hosting of a national level basketball tournament; implement a student leadership programme and a Math and Science iPad Incubator project for faculty; pilot Smartmusic in

Grade 8 as well as brought inspirational guest speakers to our students and community. The Advancement team worked with over 150 parent volunteers who donated time and energy to run events serving the entire York School community including the annual Night on the Town and two successful alumni events. The 2014-2015 year saw great academic success at every level. All teachers received training and developed expertise in an online curriculum software, Atlas, to improve vertical alignment of content and learning practices from JK - Grade 12. This was Jennifer Wyatt’s first year as Principal of the Junior School. Her dedication and preparation as Vice Principal and Director of Curriculum ensured the level of excellence established under Susan Charron would continue. All Junior School faculty participated in year long professional development on fostering the development of executive function skills and

3

transdisciplinary connections. Under Principal Helen Gin, the Middle School continued to focus on the overall experience of our students in the academic and co-curricular programmes as well as their pyscho-social emotional development needs. In June 2015, we submitted our Diploma Programme self study to the International Baccalaureate Organization. The response recognized and commended a wide variety of programme practices at The York School, including close alignment between the school’s mission statement and philosophy and those of the IBO, exemplary commitment to participation in the IB world community, and an exemplary diploma pass rate during the period under review. This year’s graduating class of 66 students applied to 481 programmes at universities around the world. 24% of the class applied to US colleges while 18% applied to UK universities. In all cases, students received one or more offers of admission to these top ranked post-secondary institutions. Canadian applications and admissions continued to be strong. Students received admission to several of the most competitive programmes across Canada. Once again, admission to Canada’s top ranked universities and programmes was achieved by our graduates with Queen’s, McGill, UBC, Western and 4

U of T as popular destinations. 34% of grads are heading into STEM programmes while 20% are entering business/commerce related programmes. International destinations of our graduates included The University of Florida, Berklee College of Music, Pitzer College, Georgetown, Amherst College, University of Liverpool, University of Bath, St. Andrew’s University and Webster University in Vienna. During Rick DeMarinis’s second year as Director of Athletics, high participation in athletics continued to trend. In the Junior School, 96% of the student body participated in one or more athletic programmes during the school year – a record! In the Middle School, 67% of the students enjoyed one or more athletic programmes and in the senior school 59% of the student body participated in Gladiator Athletics. The York School offered 47 competitive teams from U10 to senior level. Gladiator Athletics brought home 4 CISAA championships in 2014-2015. It has been a very successful first year under the guidance of the 20/20 Vision Strategic Plan, and with many exciting changes in store for The York School. My thanks to all members of the Board of Directors and to the many parent volunteers who continue to support our school’s mission. Tim Thorsteinson Chair, Board of Directors

MESSAGE FROM CONOR JONES, HEAD OF SCHOOL The strategic planning process which involved consultation with parents, students, alumni, faculty and staff through all of 2013 and into the fall of 2014, culminated with the communication 20/20 Vision – Strategic Plan 2015-2020. This document is a direction and a scaffold on which The York School can, with pride and certainty, make the decisions required to meet our community’s desire for a progressive and contemporary education. The self evaluation involved in the planning process identified many strengths. The process confirmed our current direction but did not indicate with clarity how to make our good school even better. Working with the Board of Directors and the faculty and staff over the course of the year, the plan has been refined to ensure we make progress. In our strategic plan, Academic Excellence is not a given as if it just somehow existed in and of itself. It is a strategic direction that requires the school to deliver on this promise – to deliver academic excellence. The other aspects of the plan follow suit; to accomplish this one must support the whole child, for unhappy and unhealthy children do not achieve academic excellence. Nor can students excel in facilities that are not conducive and purpose-bound to this endeavour. Supporting our 8

students as they grow into their responsibilities and privileges as citizens echoes our mission. The overarching need to provide long term security and sustainability for our students and faculty is a responsibility of our community to our future. The strategic plan tells us what we must do. What we must not do is leave the ideas to sit until we return to revisit the plan in five years. With pride in my staff, the Board and the entire community, this document now has a life and presence in what we are doing and who we are going to become. Each strategic direction has a task force formed of volunteers engaged in identifying, prioritizing and defining the way forward. For each of these areas, professional development time and funds support the investigation, identification and implementation of ideas. A unifying ‘Think Tank’ was formed to tackle the larger issues, make connections between directions

and assist our school in setting priorities and the sequence necessary to achieve our goals. Our community will be making informed, appropriate and even courageous decisions to ensure our students are well served now and in the future. The school year 2014-2015 has launched the school into the 50th anniversary celebrations to follow with an appropriate focus on the past and a plan of how to

make a good school into a great one. Thank you Board, parents, volunteers, students, faculty and staff, donors and contributors – you are The York School. The great news in this Annual Report reflects your care and affinity for the school you help create each day. Conor Jones Head of School

MESSAGE FROM DERRICK ABRAHAM & STEPHEN YUZPE CO-CHAIRS OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE

2014-2015 has been another successful financial year for The York School. Under the leadership of Conor Jones, both the school and its students have continued to thrive and we are well positioned for a healthy financial future. The fiscal year ending June 30, 2015 saw few changes in operations. This is reflected in the overall financial statements and consistent with the implementation of our strategic plan, which led us to maintain operations while setting our priorities for the next five years. As we move ahead, we will continue to base tuition fees on the operating costs of the school while, remaining competitive with other GTA independent schools.

12

Balance Sheet At June 30, 2015 our cash balance had increased to $4M while our long term debt had decreased year-over-year by $1.2M to $4.3M. Capital assets have also declined due to another year of amortization which was not offset by any major capital purchases. This limited investment in capital assets is temporary as we begin implementing one of the strategic plan goals of enhancing the Middle and Senior school facilities at 1320 Yonge Street. Liabilities have decreased overall from the prior year. The prepaid fees have increased by $670,000 due to the increase in tuition rates from $27,800 in 2014/15 to $29,000 for 2015/16. This increase is offset by the $1.2M mortgage repayment.

Revenues For 2014/15, revenue from all sources was $20.7 million which is an increase of $700,000 over the prior year. This increase is primarily due to the increased enrolment levels. Expenses Expenses have increased by 4% over the prior year due to increased compensation costs. Consistent with prior years, teaching salaries and benefits are the largest single expense of the school. The school remains committed to providing students with high calibre faculty and

therefore this expense will remain a significant item. The school’s actual financial results for the year were ahead of budget and we continue to utilize appropriate controls and processes to ensure this continued financial stability. In closing, our financial standing is healthy and the Finance team continues to ensure we control costs, plan for the future and provide all necessary resources to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff. Derrick Abraham & Stephen Yuzpe Co-Chairs, Finance Committee

MESSAGE FROM JESSICA MONK YPA PRESIDENT

Dear Parents and York School Community, This was my first year as President of the York Parents Association (YPA) and I thank the wonderful York School parents, grandparents, caregivers and students for welcoming me in this capacity, and for their involvement and commitment to the school. The goals of the YPA are to promote a strong, cohesive and inclusive parent and student body and to oversee events which increase school spirit and a sense of community, both at the student and parent level. Over the past year we had more than 150 volunteers providing hundreds of hours of their time to help the YPA achieve these goals. With the help of these volunteers, the YPA had a year full of events for parents and students including evening speaker sessions, Junior School and Middle School Social Nights, a Halloween event at the Junior School, three highly successful Pancakes with Pops mornings, a Second Hand Uniform Sale, and our two year-end Fun Fairs for both the Junior and Middle Schools. In addition to hosting grade parent parties, parent coffee mornings and managing the treats for teachers and staff programme, 18

the YPA also provided financial and volunteer support for guest speakers, organized holiday decorations at both campuses, supported Sports Day and the Middle School Dance, and made a financial contribution to the Grade 12 Graduation Dinner. All of these events and activities support our student and parent community and would not be possible without the commitment and hard work of our parent volunteers who are essential to the success of our children at The York School. I encourage your unique contributions of ideas, talents, and time to the York Parents Association. Please consider any one or more of the many opportunities to join the YPA and become involved in The York School community. On behalf of the York Parents Association, I thank you for your continued support. Jessica Monk YPA President
