Questions to ask the teaching faculty about the curriculum: • • • • • • • • • •

What are the curriculum highlights? What kinds and amount of homework can be expected? How can we help support our son/daughter’s learning at home? How do you know when my son or daughter needs more support or enrichment? What is the best way to access information, such as homework, assignments? What is trail mail? What happens when my child misses a class due date/test? What happens in homeroom each day? How can my child get involved with co-curricular activities? What is a reasonable amount of co-curricular involvement (when is it too much)? What do you love most about The York School?

Other information/publications to learn more about our Middle School approach can be found on our website and YorkNet (Curriculum Guides, Academic Calendars, Friday Flash). If you are left with any questions after tonight’s conversations, please either email the relevant teacher or the Middle School Principal, Helen Gin. Feel free to share your thoughts on this year’s curriculum evening.

rade 11 marks the beginning of the IB Diploma for our students, a time when their post-secondary goals come into sharper focus and they develop a deeper sense of the importance of the matters they are studying and their ability to perform the skills being taught. In class, students dig deeply into subjects they have chosen, while out of class, they take opportunities to show real leadership, both within the school and beyond. Before the winter break, they choose a topic that fascinates them to research for their extended essay. In January, they face their first set of Diploma-style exams. Many of them head off to India in March to teach children at Global Pathways School. Highlights of the year you may want to ask about: English: Literature: Through the Looking Glass, the poetry of William Blake and The Great Gatsby Language and Literature: Advertising and an analysis of the cultural contexts of a wide variety of texts. French: Excursion to Théâtre Français de Toronto to see ‘Les Zinpirés’ and Molière’s ‘Don Juan’. Spanish: Discuss current issues faced in Spanish countries around the world. Mandarin: Trip to Chinatown to eat at a genuine Chinese restaurant. Economics: Analyze the costs of pollution by looking at Toronto’s traffic congestion. Geography: Analyze population policies, and the impacts of climate change, and conduct urban fieldwork. History: Tracing the course of race relations in the US and analyzing historians’ interpretations of WWI. Biology: Putting nutritional labels to the test, and determining which variables affect our physical performance. Chemistry: Making ice cream and understanding the chemistry behind dry ice. Environmental Systems: Culture, politics and science, and our thorniest environmental problems. Physics: Students explore energy in all its forms and are introduced to the wave-particle duality of light. Mathematics: Drawing in desmos using functions while making artistic designs. Art: Students will explore different art styles to support their creation of a body of exhibition works. Music: Students study music history, while developing their technical skill and building repertoire. Film: Students will create a portfolio of short films. Exams in January and June: English, Languages, Humanities, Sciences, Maths, Music. If you are left with any questions after tonight’s conversations, please either email the relevant teacher or the Senior School Principal, David Hamilton (dhamilton@yorkschool.com). T

he Grade 12 year started off with a retreat to Cedar Glen Camp, where students reflected on the challenges ahead and made a commitment to help one another. Since that time, we have seen students making the best of their time at the school, diligently putting in the work required to post the best marks possible. This is a year in which students will have a fairly steady diet of internal assessments due across all subjects, with an all-important mid-year set of exams beginning in late January, and then finally the IB exams which get underway on May 4th. It is also a year to “make the most of it,” including taking part in teams, the Senior School play, service opportunities, dances, the grad prank, and end-of-the-year celebrations, including a retreat, the prom, the graduation ceremony, and the graduation dinner. Highlights of courses that you might wish to explore this evening with teachers include: English: May include Othello, Emily Dickinson, Martin Luther King, Death of a Salesman, Endgame Metamorphosis, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Tempest. French: Students debate current issues in the Francophone world and take in a play. Spanish: Cultural immersion through films, songs, and a trip to a Spanish restaurant. Mandarin: Trip to a Chinese Tea House. Economics: Foreign exchange market simulation and the significance of Brexit. Geography: Interview survivors of Hurricane Katrina and analyze the management of the Ebola outbreak. History: Why the Cold War ended. Biology: DNA and biotechnology techniques including forensics, cloning, and genetic engineering. Chemistry: Independent investigations of such topics as fuel, forensics, art, batteries and candy. Environmental Systems: Water, agricultural shortages and atmospheric pollution. Physics: Electromagnetic induction, quantum and particle physics, astrophysics and relativity. Mathematics: Using ‘Little Bits’ to explore logic and a trip to the pool hall to study vectors. Art: Students prepare for their final exhibition in the spring. Music: Study music from diverse cultures and give major performances of works they have prepared. Film: Students will showcase their final films at the TIFF Lightbox IB film festival. Exams in late January and May: English, Languages, Humanities, Sciences, Maths, Music. If you are left with any questions after tonight’s conversations, please either email the relevant teacher or the Senior School Principal, David Hamilton (dhamilton@yorkschool.com).
