Activity Description and Educational Rationale

IB Geography students must complete a field work project which counts for 20% of the Geography grade awarded by the IB. Students will spend the day collecting the data that will serve as the basis for this project. Students will be collecting and recording data pertaining to the factors that affect microclimates, specifically the Urban Heat Island effect. Measuring microclimates: Students will be recording temperature and humidity, in addition to recording their location and observing land use (for example, am I on a residential street or a park?) The data will be collected using the Survey123 app that students will download on to their smartphones. This app is published by ESRI and allows students to record location and data (such as temperature and land use) for each data point. Students will then be responsible for processing, mapping and analyzing the data individually – this will serve as the foundation for their Internal Assessment field work paper.

Emergency Contact Approximate Cost

Students will be collecting data in groups of two or three students on predefined routes. The teacher chaperone will be circulating between the groups. All groups will be able to contact the teacher by cell phone and will have a map of the area. Megan Gardner Ross 647 648 9202 Free

Specific Instructions for Students: This fieldwork is weather dependent, so if it is raining, we will collect data on an alternate date. Therefore, students should dress for a warm, sunny day. Sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle is recommended. Clothing: Comfortable walking shoes are a must. Summer uniform is an expectation. Food: Students should eat their lunch before we depart - between 11:40am-12:00pm
