THE​ ​YORK​ ​SCHOOL​ ​VOLUNTEERS Parent​ ​volunteers​ ​are​ ​at​ ​the​ ​school​ ​every​ ​day,​ ​running​ ​events​ ​and​ ​helping​ ​to​ ​build​ ​our​ ​school spirit​ ​and​ ​sense​ ​of​ ​community.​ ​Volunteering​ ​any​ ​amount​ ​of​ ​time​ ​is​ ​one​ ​of​ ​the​ ​most​ ​valuable ways​ ​in​ ​which​ ​you​ ​can​ ​get​ ​involved​ ​in​ ​supporting​ ​your​ ​child’s​ ​education.​ ​It​ ​is​ ​also​ ​a​ ​wonderful way​ ​to​ ​meet​ ​new​ ​people​ ​within​ ​the​ ​community.

THE​ ​YORK​ ​SCHOOL​ ​PARENTS’​ ​ASSOCIATION​ ​(YPA) All​ ​parents​ ​of​ ​York​ ​School​ ​students​ ​are​ ​members​ ​of​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School​ ​Parents’​ ​Association (YPA).​ ​The​ ​YPA​ ​is​ ​a​ ​volunteer​ ​organization​ ​of​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School​ ​whose​ ​goals​ ​are: ● ● ● ●

To​ ​promote​ ​a​ ​strong,​ ​cooperative​ ​and​ ​welcoming​ ​parent​ ​community​ ​and​ ​enhance communication​ ​within​ ​the​ ​overall​ ​school​ ​community To​ ​conduct​ ​events​ ​that​ ​increase​ ​school​ ​spirit​ ​and​ ​camaraderie To​ ​promote​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School’s​ ​objectives​ ​by​ ​encouraging​ ​volunteerism​ ​and​ ​raising​ ​funds for​ ​the​ ​School To​ ​support​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School’s​ ​overall​ ​mission​ ​statement

The​ ​purpose​ ​of​ ​the​ ​YPA​ ​is​ ​to​ ​help​ ​maintain​ ​a​ ​strong,​ ​cooperative​ ​and​ ​friendly​ ​relationship between​ ​all​ ​parents​ ​and​ ​to​ ​support​ ​the​ ​school’s​ ​overall​ ​mission.​ ​The​ ​YPA​ ​is​ ​the​ ​primary​ ​vehicle for​ ​volunteering​ ​at​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School. THE​ ​YORK​ ​SCHOOL​ ​INTERNATIONAL​ ​PARENTS’​ ​(YIP)​ ​COMMITTEE International​ ​families​ ​are​ ​vital​ ​members​ ​of​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School​ ​community.​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School International​ ​Parents’​ ​(YIP)​ ​Committee​ ​works​ ​under​ ​the​ ​umbrella​ ​of​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School​ ​Parents’ Association​ ​to​ ​provide​ ​parents​ ​in​ ​our​ ​school​ ​community​ ​from​ ​outside​ ​Toronto​ ​with​ ​valuable social​ ​connections​ ​and​ ​practical​ ​information​ ​about​ ​their​ ​new​ ​home. YIP​ ​hosts​ ​regular​ ​coffee​ ​mornings,​ ​in​ ​addition​ ​to​ ​many​ ​other​ ​events,​ ​to​ ​help​ ​with​ ​the​ ​multitude​ ​of questions​ ​that​ ​arise​ ​when​ ​living​ ​somewhere​ ​new. CLASS​ ​PARENTS Class​ ​Parents​ ​connect​ ​each​ ​class’​ ​parents​ ​with​ ​one​ ​another,​ ​as​ ​well​ ​as​ ​with​ ​the​ ​school’s administration​ ​more​ ​broadly.​ ​There​ ​are​ ​typically​ ​two​ ​volunteers​ ​per​ ​class​ ​and​ ​all​ ​parents​ ​are welcome​ ​to​ ​volunteer​ ​to​ ​serve​ ​as​ ​Class​ ​Parents.​ ​This​ ​is​ ​an​ ​opportunity​ ​for​ ​you​ ​to​ ​directly​ ​impact your​ ​child’s​ ​day-to-day​ ​experience​ ​at​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School​​ ​by​ ​organizing​ ​activities​ ​and​ ​performing duties​ ​on​ ​behalf​ ​of​ ​his​ ​or​ ​her​ ​entire​ ​class.​ ​Most​ ​Class​ ​Parent​ ​duties​ ​can​ ​be​ ​done​ ​from​ ​the comfort​ ​of​ ​your​ ​own​ ​home​ ​and​ ​include: ● ● ●

Communications:​​ ​introducing​ ​yourself​ ​to​ ​parents,​ ​welcoming​ ​new​ ​families,​ ​sending emails Events:​​ ​Organizing​ ​the​ ​grade​ ​party​ ​and​ ​additional​ ​(optional)​ ​social​ ​events Teacher​ ​Recognition:​​ ​Assisting​ ​with​ ​‘Treats​ ​for​ ​Teachers​ ​and​ ​Staff’​ ​and​ ​teacher​ ​gifts

The​ ​Advancement​ ​team​ ​is​ ​here​ ​to​ ​support​ ​Class​ ​Parents​ ​with​ ​email​ ​templates,​ ​sample spreadsheets​ ​and​ ​much​ ​more.

EVENT​ ​VOLUNTEERS Volunteers​ ​are​ ​involved​ ​with​ ​a​ ​wide​ ​variety​ ​of​ ​events​ ​throughout​ ​the​ ​school​ ​year.​ ​You​ ​can choose​ ​to​ ​help​ ​as​ ​an​ ​Event​ ​Chair​ ​or​ ​as​ ​an​ ​Event​ ​Volunteer.​ ​If​ ​you​ ​are​ ​a​ ​Class​ ​Parent​ ​or​ ​sit​ ​on the​ ​YPA​ ​Executive,​ ​you​ ​are​ ​always​ ​welcome​ ​to​ ​volunteer​ ​for​ ​an​ ​event​ ​as​ ​well. Event​ ​Chairs Event​ ​Chairs​ ​lead,​ ​organize,​ ​coordinate,​ ​execute​ ​and​ ​follow​ ​up​ ​on​ ​each​ ​event​ ​or​ ​committee activity.​ ​Co-Chairs​ ​are​ ​encouraged​ ​to​ ​attend​ ​YPA​ ​meetings​ ​in​ ​order​ ​to​ ​recruit​ ​volunteers​ ​and provide​ ​progress​ ​updates. The​ ​Advancement​ ​team​ ​assists​ ​event​ ​chairs​ ​with​ ​logistics​ ​and​ ​communications,​ ​as​ ​well​ ​as​ ​act as​ ​consultants​ ​to​ ​ensure​ ​volunteer-led​ ​events​ ​are​ ​run​ ​according​ ​to​ ​York​ ​policies​ ​and procedures. Event​ ​Volunteers Support​ ​pre-event,​ ​at​ ​the​ ​event​ ​and​ ​post-event​ ​with​ ​planning,​ ​logistics,​ ​set-up​ ​and​ ​take​ ​down.

SCHOOL​ ​SERVICE​ ​POSITIONS Library​ ​Volunteers You​ ​can​ ​volunteer​ ​for​ ​1-6​ ​hours​ ​per​ ​week​ ​when​ ​mutually​ ​convenient​ ​for​ ​you​ ​and​ ​the​ ​library​ ​at either​ ​campus​ ​location.​ ​Responsibilities​ ​include​ ​completing​ ​inventory,​ ​cataloguing​ ​books​ ​and assisting​ ​with​ ​other​ ​library​ ​tasks​ ​as​ ​needed. Event​ ​Photography There​ ​are​ ​many​ ​opportunities​ ​throughout​ ​the​ ​year​ ​when​ ​event​ ​photographs​ ​may​ ​be​ ​taken​ ​for the​ ​school’s​ ​use,​ ​including​ ​assemblies,​ ​athletics​ ​and/or​ ​field​ ​trips.​ ​Photography​ ​volunteers’ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​4


images​ ​may​ ​be​ ​distributed​ ​to​ ​event​ ​participants​ ​as​ ​a​ ​special​ ​keepsake​ ​or​ ​used​ ​in​ ​school marketing​ ​materials,​ ​and​ ​are​ ​a​ ​great​ ​way​ ​of​ ​capturing​ ​all​ ​the​ ​exciting​ ​events​ ​that​ ​take​ ​place​ ​at The​ ​York​ ​School. ADVANCEMENT​ ​VOLUNTEERS The​ ​Advancement​ ​Office​ ​has​ ​a​ ​range​ ​of​ ​other​ ​volunteer​ ​opportunities​ ​available​ ​to​ ​parents​ ​who will​ ​act​ ​as​ ​key​ ​advocates​ ​and​ ​agents​ ​of​ ​the​ ​growing​ ​culture​ ​of​ ​philanthropy​ ​at​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School. The​ ​Advancement​ ​Office​ ​is​ ​committed​ ​to​ ​supporting​ ​the​ ​mission​ ​and​ ​vision​ ​of​ ​the​ ​School​ ​by deepening​ ​the​ ​culture​ ​of​ ​giving​ ​that​ ​will​ ​fill​ ​the​ ​funding​ ​gap​ ​between​ ​tuition​ ​revenue​ ​and​ ​the actual​ ​costs​ ​of​ ​running​ ​a​ ​world-class,​ ​leading​ ​institution​ ​in​ ​progressive,​ ​global​ ​education. Advancement​ ​volunteers​ ​are​ ​a​ ​vital​ ​part​ ​of​ ​this​ ​function​ ​that​ ​helps​ ​make​ ​York​ ​exceptional. Annual​ ​Fund​ ​Ambassador Volunteers​ ​in​ ​this​ ​role​ ​will​ ​help​ ​The​ ​York​ ​School​ ​community​ ​deepen​ ​its​ ​culture​ ​of​ ​philanthropy. As​ ​a​ ​volunteer​ ​you​ ​will​ ​be​ ​responsible​ ​for​ ​communicating​ ​the​ ​value​ ​and​ ​impact​ ​of​ ​supporting​ ​the Annual​ ​Fund​ ​and​ ​encourage​ ​members​ ​of​ ​the​ ​community​ ​to​ ​make​ ​a​ ​monetary​ ​donation. Volunteers​ ​will​ ​be​ ​asked​ ​to​ ​support​ ​the​ ​Annual​ ​Fund​ ​and​ ​participate​ ​in​ ​1-2​ ​focus​ ​groups​ ​to provide​ ​feedback​ ​and​ ​guidance​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Advancement​ ​Office. The​ ​Advancement​ ​Office​ ​will​ ​support​ ​volunteers​ ​in​ ​these​ ​roles​ ​by​ ​providing​ ​them​ ​with the​ ​following​ ​resources​ ​where​ ​applicable​ ​to​ ​the​ ​role​ ​and​ ​activities​ ​the​ ​volunteer​ ​is​ ​able​ ​to undertake: ● training​ ​and​ ​guidance​ ​on​ ​the​ ​role ● contact​ ​lists ● draft​ ​messaging​ ​for​ ​letters,​ ​notes​ ​and/or​ ​emails ● materials​ ​describing​ ​the​ ​applicable​ ​project ● donations​ ​forms​ ​and​ ​instructions ● suggested​ ​speaking​ ​points​ ​and​ ​responses​ ​for​ ​FAQ’s
