Goals & Aims In the Junior School (Grades JK5), the Athletics Programme’s goal is to develop skills, promote participation, and put our competitive teams in a position to compete in each game they play. The Junior School programme will provide athletes opportunities to be a part of our 11 competitive teams for Grades 3, 4 and 5, and also allow our grade JK to Grade 5 students an opportunity to develop their skills in Athlete Development Programmes. Athletes participating in any Junior School Athletic Programme will understand the values of commitment, enthusiasm and respect and how it relates to sport. In the Middle/Senior School (Grades 612), the Athletics Programme focuses on providing exposure to a wide variety of sports at all levels. The goal is to inspire our studentathletes to build on their sport foundation. They will be encouraged to set goals to achieve personal growth. Our studentathletes have the opportunity to try out for Interscholastic Teams or join Recreational, Athletic Development Programmes. There are 41 competitive teams offered at the Middle and Senior School level. By participating in Athletic Programmes, our athletes improve their daily fitness and sport specific skills while contributing to the athletic culture of our school. Across all divisions of the school, the Athletics Department aims to: ● develop a lifelong passion for sport and healthy/active living ● facilitate the pursuit of personal best and athletic excellence through competition, hard work, fair play and teamwork ● build healthy, supportive, and safe sporting environments where students can maximize their potential through selfactualization and discovery ● enhance school spirit and pride by providing as many opportunities as possible to participate on school teams and/or clubs ● develop an appreciation and understanding of sportspecific traditions, rules and cultures. ● celebrate and value individual and team successes. ● support students in balancing cocurricular responsibilities and commitments.

The York School Athletic Offerings This section provide details about the ways students can become involved in Athletics at The York School. There are a wide variety of options including Core/Competitive Teams, Gladiator Athletic Development Programmes and Intramurals. These Athletic offerings are run in one of the three seasons of play Fall, Winter and Spring.
How do students and parents become informed about athletics? The York School web site (www.yorkschool.com) has an Athletics Page associated with each school division, namely, Junior, Middle and Senior. The divisional athletics page provides access to all the information students and parents need to know about the Athletic Programmes within the division. From the Athletics Page there are links to the: ● Practice schedule by season ● Programme and team descriptions and age/grade eligibility ● Athletic programme registration (or signup) ● Links to the team pages, which include schedules of practices and games, if applicable. In the Friday Flash, the school weekly parent bulletin, athletics announcements and reminders about registration dates are outlined in the each school division. Within the school, students are made aware athletics programmes and the signup procedure through PE classes, assembly announcements, viewing the Athletics Information Boards outside each Gymnasium, checking the Information monitors located in various locations in the school, and York TV announcements (Middle/Senior School).
Core/Competitive Teams: Studentathletes may play on only one team per season, unless they have special permission from the Director of Athletics. The following chart shows the Competitive Teams offered each season by division. *We reserve the right to not field a team if there is insufficient interest by students. *Referring to an age group as “under” means all players must be younger than that age on December 31. For example U11 for 201617 means all players must be 10 or younger on December 31, 2016. 4

Gladiator Athletic Development Programmes (GADPs) Within each season (Fall, Winter, Spring), The York School will run our GADPs. These programmes are primarily fun and developmental, with the aim of either introducing a new sport to students or building on skills. Some of the programmes introduced are likely to provide recreational outlets for students to enjoy throughout their lives. GADPs are available at all three levels (Junior, Middle and Senior). GADPs will require preregistration and are feebased programmes. Registration for programmes will be announced on the website.
Intramural Programme Intramural programs are another option for students to be involved in athletics. These run during the lunch recess, and are offered twice a week. A variety of sports will be offered as intramurals. At the Junior School, intramurals are available to students in Grades 4 and 5. Sign up and scheduling for intramurals will be managed by the Grade 4/5 PHE teacher. At the Middle and Senior School, intramurals are the initiative of the Student Athletic Director leaders. The intramural signup procedure will be announced by these student leaders and schedules will be posted outside the office of the Director of Athletics. Students in Grades 68 play intramurals during the first half of the lunch period and Grade 912 students play in the second half of the lunch period.
Schedules Practice schedules for the Core/Competitive offerings and the GADP and intramural time slots, by season, can be found in Appendix A (Junior School) and Appendix B (Middle & Senior School). Additionally, both Core/Competitive teams and the GADPs have “Team” pages. These pages contain the practice schedule, game schedule, if applicable and information about the coach/coaches. Parents are encouraged to subscribe to the applicable RSS feeds.

Leagues of Play The York School competes in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA). The CISAA is a collaboration of 36 collegial independent schools across Ontario whose mandate is to provide their students with exciting athletic opportunities, challenging competitive experience and to teach and demand positive attitudes and respect for others. In addition to competition within the CISAA, teams enjoy and achieve great success by competing in Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial championships and by experiencing national Independent School tournament competitions. For more information about CISAA, please see their website.
Divisions of Play Based on our school population we are a Division 2 (D2) school. In some situations, we may play at the Division 1 or Division 3 level.

The York School StudentAthlete Policies: The policies listed below have been created to provide consistency and fairness when dealing with studentathletes.
Athletic Code of Conduct Participation in athletics and cocurricular activities at The York School is an integral part of school life. This code is an extension of the school’s Code of Conduct. To help facilitate this philosophy, each studentathlete must abide by the following code.
Attendance & Commitment Studentathletes are expected to attend all practices. The only exception is when the athlete has informed his or her coach in writing of a previous commitment. If a studentathlete does not attend practice without a documented explanation, he or she should not expect to play in the next game. Studentathletes are expected to attend all games and tournaments, as well as the championships. This may require a Saturday commitment. Studentathletes who fail to attend a game without legitimate excuse (e.g., illness, family emergency, medical appointment) or who fail to provide sufficient notice of their impending absence should expect not to play in the season’s next game. Absences from playoffs/championships tournaments will result in a three game suspension for the subsequent athletic season. Absences from practices or games for reason of school disciplinary measures or academic reasons will only be considered legitimate where the absence has been countenanced by the Division Principal, or where a decision has been made that the student is ineligible to play by virtue of the academic eligibility process. Students who miss classes on game day without legitimate excuse or because they have been ill will only be eligible to participate in the day’s game on the authority of the Division Principal and Athletic Director. Repeated absences from practices and/or games may lead to dismissal from the team, to be determined by the coach and Athletic Director.
Academics Students who must be absent from a class or classes must notify their teacher(s) in person or via email at least one day prior to their absence. Studentathletes are responsible for completing missed homework, assignments or projects due to an athletic activity and must inform their respective teachers one day ahead of their absence due to athletics. Students must make up any tests missed within 48 hours of their return to school following the athletic event. 8
Any studentathlete who is deemed to be neglectful of his or her academic studies or who is deemed to be in academic difficulty will be referred to the appropriate Division Principal and Athletic Director to determine the student’s eligibility. A ‘return to play’ plan may be required in certain instances. For the complete Academic Policy of The York School, refer to the Core Agreement.
Conduct Studentathletes are expected to: ● show respect to all coaches, referees, players, spectators and school property. ● act as ambassadors for the school. ● abide by all rules set out by coaches. ● conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner ● demonstrate appropriate conduct on all bus trips. Studentathletes are permitted to use sports equipment and/or be present in the gymnasium only under the supervision of their coach. Student athletes who do not conduct themselves in accordance with this Code of Conduct may be disciplined in any of the following ways: ● verbal reprimand from the coach ● reduced playing time ● sitting out and observing ● not dressing for a game ● not attending a game or games ● dismissal from the team The reason for a dismissal from a team shall be reviewed by the Director of Athletics to determine the studentathletes eligibility to participate on school team for the next term.
Team Selection Tryouts for a team take place in the first 23 practices of a new season (in the regular scheduled practice slot). For teams with students in Grades 35, studentathletes will not be ‘cut’ from the team. In Grades 68, there is the possibility of ‘cuts’, but these are avoided if possible. In cases where interest in a team exceeds the forecasted numbers, developmental teams may be created to work alongside the team. If this option is not available, the team selection will be made by a committee (Athletic Director and coach(es)) considering factors such as ability, work ethic, and commitment. 9
In Grades 912, the team will be selected based on ability, work ethic, and commitment. Selections will be made in a sensitive manner.
Dress Code for StudentAthletes To go to games and tournaments, studentathletes shall dress in their team uniform and wear their Windsuit or hoodie on top. On game days while at school, studentathletes are permitted to wear their team jersey over their regular school uniform top (in Middle/Senior School this means over the white shirt and tie).
Goals for the Sport Season Studentathletes need to set goals for their personal growth. As a team member, coaches will ask studentathletes to identify two (2) personal goals they want to achieve by being a team member. These goals are to be documented on the Athletic Permission and Code of Conduct form.
Transportation Policy: The York School makes transportation arrangements for all games/contests that take place offsite. All team members shall travel with the team on the transportation provided by the school unless written permission has been given by the parent to travel one or both ways via another means, or unless, in the case of a licensed driverstudent, written permission has been received from the parent and that student/driver is physically capable to drive and is not driving other students. When returning to The York School following an athletic event, the school will not entertain special bus stops along the way to let studentathletes off the bus. For students in Grades 312, if a parent advises the coach that he/she will pick up his/her child from the game, if that parent has not arrived within 10 minutes of the conclusion of the game, the child will be required to board the bus with the team and return to The York School. For students in Grades 912, should a parent provide written permission for a student be dismissed from a game in Toronto, rather than travelling back to school with the team, the parent must have emailed the coach before departure to the game with this directive. In this situation, The York School takes no responsibility for the method of transport a student takes home. In some instances for weekend events, parents will be required to drive or pick up their child from an athletic venue. The York School will not arrange nor be responsible for carpooling.
10
Fees: There is a team fee for each school team participated on by a studentathlete. The fee is used to cover transportation, tournament registration fees, and a player package. For 20162017, the team fee shall be: Junior School Team $135 Middle School team $155 Senior School team $175 Each student will be assigned a team uniform at the beginning of the season and is responsible for returning it washed and in acceptable condition at the end of the season. Any student who fails to do so will be assessed a replacement fee of $100. Please note that some teams buy their uniform and equipment and therefore the above does not apply. For optional, nonleague out of town tournaments, the costs for accommodation, transportation, tournament fee and food will be the responsibility of the parents of the studentathletes. The venturing out form for these oneoff events shall provide the fee information.

The York School Coaches Policies
Coaches Certification & Personal Development In certain sports, Community Coaches will be brought in to coach alongside The York School coach. These coaches will bring sport specific knowledge to further develop our studentathletes. All coaches are certified in First Aid and CPR. It is our goal to get our faculty coaches to obtain an NCCP certification in a sport that they are coaching.
Dress Code for Coaches Coaches shall wear The York School Coach’s apparel to games and tournaments.
Discipline All minor team and studentathlete discipline issues shall be the responsibility of the team coach(es). All major discipline issues should be reported to the Director of Athletics and the relevant Principal as soon as possible so that the necessary followup can be done. All parent/coach meetings related to discipline should include the Director of Athletics.
Injuries All injuries to players should be addressed immediately. All injuries should be documented in detail (Accident Report in First Aid Kit) and shared with the Director of Athletics for appropriate followup.
Academic/Athletics Conflicts for Coaches Schedules have be created to avoid an coach’s academic/athletic conflicts. Should any unforeseen issues arise, please contact the Director of Athletics.
Game Reports All coaches are asked to submit a short game report (game details, scores, highlights) following the game. The form for the report is found on YorkNet. Coaches are also asked to provide pictures from games with their report.
Travel The York School Van can be driven by the coach provided that the number of passengers does not exceed 5 and that the coach has registered his/her information with the Business Office.
Coaches Code of Conduct All coaches shall sign the Coaches Code of Conduct in Appendix D and return to the Director of Athletics. 12
Role of the Parent In athletics, the role of the parent is to support and encourage their child in his/her athletic endeavors. The Athletics Director, Rick Demarinis has launched a blog, The Locker Room, with many important tips and suggestions for parents and athletes.
24 Hour Rule Youth sports can be an emotional experience. The physical activity of the kids can often spill onto the sidelines and into the stands and create strong reactions in coaches and parents. For parents, it is important to separate their child's sports development from game emotions. For this reason, many leagues and coaches have adopted the "24 Hour Rule" which simply states that coaches will not discuss a game or situation until at least 24 hours after the fact. This important rule does two things. First, it moves the discussion away from the presence of the players. Second, it allows all parties to have time to put things in perspective and "cool off", if necessary. If parents will respect the 24 hour rule, their concerns are more likely to be fully addressed in reasoned discussion. More importantly, the kids' enjoyment of a game won't be marred by an illtimed confrontation.
Games, Tournaments & International Travel Exhibition games and tournaments are an excellent opportunity to supplement the CIS season. They allow our athletes to experience the level of competition outside the CIS and to showcase the talents of The York School studentathletes. For special tournaments requiring overnight stays, parents will be provided with a permission and venturing out package specific for the event. this package will outline an itinerary, travel arrangements and fees. While these events are not mandatory, they will serve to further develop the studentathlete.
13
Spectator Policy
Respect rules, officials and opponents The Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) and The York School enthusiastically invite spectators to attend athletic activities and to assist in the educational process by acting as good role models and by reinforcing the ideals of sportsmanship. Spectators are reminded that school athletic activities are an important part of the school’s programme and provide learning opportunities and enjoyment for students. Spectators are to adhere to the same standard of sportsmanship conduct that is expected of all CISAA athletes and coaches.
Spectator expectations Spectators are welcome and encouraged to attend school athletic activities as guests of the school and accordingly must comply with The York School’s rules and policies. Spectators must not compromise or interfere with the enjoyment of the students participating or other spectators, nor with the roles of officials and school representatives supervising the activity. Spectators are not permitted in the bench area nor in the proximity of the players and coaches during game play. Spectators are asked to enjoy the game from the bleachers at the east side of the gym. Abusive conduct by spectators that is directed at participants, officials or coaches or interferes with the performance of students, officials or coaches will not be tolerated.
Recourse If a spectator is not respectful of the spectator expectations, or in any way impedes the performance of the activity, any employee of The York School may ask the spectator to leave the gym.
14
Safety Protocols Participation in athletic teams and programmes may involve certain elements of risk and injury may occur while participating in the competitive and recreational programmes. At The York School, we will strive to keep parents and athletes aware of current safety protocols. Workshops on site at The York School will be offered to educate the community, where possible.
Mouthguards Mouthguards aren't just for adults! Remember to add a mouthguard for each child to your list of school supplies. Protecting your child's head, jaw and teeth, even for seemingly noncontact sports, is very important. Mouthguards not only protect the teeth. They may also prevent serious injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw and teeth are forced up against the upper teeth and jaw. Sports Canada reports that overall, 69 percent of Canadian youth participate in organized sport. In any sport, whether it's fullcontact hockey or a friendly game of racquetball, a little preparation can prevent costly and sometimes painful mistakes later on! Who should wear a mouthguard? Anyone playing contact sports or engaging in aggressive activities should wear a mouthguard. Any sport with a strong chance for contact with other participants or hard surfaces requires mouth protection. Players who participate in basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, squash, racquetball, lacrosse, rugby, inline skating and martial arts, or even recreational sports such as skateboarding and bicycling, should wear mouthguards when practicing or competing. Many athletes resist wearing a mouthguard because of bulkiness and poor fit. Custommade mouthguards are the most comfortable, nonbulky and formfitting.
Concussions Identification and Management The York School has a Concussion Policy to ensure that if a student is suspected of having a concussion, the appropriate steps will be taken. All staff members shall be trained on this policy. The following outlines some additional information for concussion identification and management.
