Welcome from the Communications Director of Advancement It is my pleasure to welcome you to The York School community. The York School has enjoyed continual growth thanks to our dedicated group of parents – both past and present – alumni and friends of the school. Each year, our community generously commits the time, expertise and financial support required to succeed in our mission of developing knowledgeable and engaged citizens of the world. One of the driving forces of The York School’s success is our highly dedicated and talented volunteers. In this Welcome Package, you will find information on volunteering and the wide range of opportunity for parent involvement and support at the school. This is an exciting year as we are opening the doors to a newly renovated Middle and Senior School – a building project which has been made possible thanks to the ongoing generosity of our parent donors. There is still an opportunity to support the Fast Forward Capital Campaign. I look forward to meeting you and discussing how you can contribute to your child’s education and future students to come. Financial Information Fast Forward Donor Wall Communications Celebrating Our Donors
In December 2015, The York School launched the Fast Forward Capital Campaign to fund the renovation of the Middle and Senior School located at 1320 Yonge Street. With a budget of $14.4M, The York School embarked on a capital campaign to raise $5M through support from our community. Our Board of Directors led the launch of the campaign with nearly $2M in leadership gifts. Our community members joined The 1320 Challenge by donating $1,320 each year for five years ($6,600), or a donation that was meaningful and achievable for their family. The doors of the renovated Middle and Senior School will open this September. The 2017-2018 academic year is going to be an exceptionally memorable one as our students, faculty and entire community explore the many new and exciting opportunities that the renovated Middle and Senior School presents. The options are endless as our students prepare to take on the world, and with your donation and support, we will continue to push the boundaries of possibility. Cumulative donations of $6,600+ will be recognized on a Donor Wall installation, which will be prominently placed in the new Gathering Place. This Donor Wall will keep record of the incredible support we have received, and the meaningful impact you have made on your child’s education. There are still spaces left – if you would like your family’s name to be included on the Fast Forward Donor Wall, please contact jmacgowan@yorkschool.com. We hope that each family will consider making a contribution. For more information or to make your donation, please contact: Judy MacGowan, CFRE Director of Advancement 416-926-1325 x 1192 jmacgowan@yorkschool.com

Advancement Financial Information Communications Advancement The Advancement Department The Advancement Department focuses on raising funds to support students and faculty, and on building a thriving community at The York School. The department organizes fundraising campaigns and works closely with parent and alumni volunteers to develop community building initiatives. Donations benefit each and every student who attends The York School. Continuing this tradition of philanthropy carries forward these enhancements to future students at the school. We are grateful to the number of individuals who have given to create such a rich educational experience for our current students. The Annual Fund Tuition alone does not fully cover the cost of a York School education. Annual Fund donations raised each year help cover costs that surpass tuition fees; the / 11 generosity of our donor community provides immediate benefits for students and faculty, such as technology advancements, the chance to learn from seasoned experts, facility improvements and abundant co-curricular opportunities. Beginning in October, parents are asked to support the Annual Fund for the academic year. All gifts are tax receiptable and have an immediate impact the student experience at The York School.

Advancement Communications Advancement Volunteering Our parent community is an amazing group. Parent volunteers are at the school every day, running events and helping to build our school spirit and sense of community. Volunteering any amount of time is one of the most valuable ways in which you can get involved in supporting your child’s education. It is also a wonderful way to meet new people within the community. There are many ways you can get involved as a new parent: The York School Parents’ Association (YPA); the York International Parents Group; the Board of Directors; Event Committees; Class Parent representatives; library volunteers; or as an event volunteer. The Parent Volunteer Handbook for 2017-2018 will be available to you in August. It outlines the many volunteer opportunities available for parents. We hope you will join this dynamic community as we work together towards building a remarkable school and school community. For more information about being a parent volunteer at The York School, please contact: ypa@yorkschool.com. Please visit us at http://www.yorkschool.com/about/support.

Junior School Technology Innovation is Our Tradition The Primary Year Programme (PYP) is a world class educational framework that focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both inside and outside the classroom. As the world changes rapidly around our students, it is important that their learning tools reflect and keep pace with that change. At The York School, the Learning, Technology and Innovation department works with each grade and specialist teacher to find meaningful ways to enrich and deepen student learning. This collaborative approach ensures that we are constantly searching for opportunities and experiences that will enhance the curriculum. This unique partnership has allowed us to curate a developmentally appropriate learning toolkit that lets both our teachers and students work at their best. Students in JK through to Grade 2 have access to classroom sets of iPads to help them inquire, question and explore; in Grades 3 to 5 each student receives an individual Chromebook to support and enrich their learning. All Junior School classrooms come equipped with Smart Boards and integrated projector/sound systems to help bring lessons to life. Afzal Shaikh is the dedicated Technology Teaching and Learning Coordinator supporting the Junior School. His primary role is to support staff and students to realize their teaching and learning potential. Middle School Student Citizenship & Leadership York Student Ambassador Programme In the fall of each academic year, York School students apply and are selected to be Student Ambassadors to promote the climate and culture of their school and build meaningful relationships with new students and families. As part of the York Student Ambassador Programme, current students may be called upon as hosts, tour guides, event speakers, Homeroom partners, or ushers/greeters at school events. Hosts connect with applicants who come for Day Visits or for Taste of York events so they can be introduced to the student experience at The York School. Tour Guides show our facilities to prospective families and describe their experience at The York School in terms of the IB programme, co-curricular and leadership opportunities and school climate/ community. Event Speakers are responsible for delivering a speech about their York School experience to prospective and/or current families. Homeroom Partners are paired with new incoming students in the late spring so they can communicate over the summer, attend a September Orientation Day, and continue to be a supportive friend throughout the year. Ushers/Greeters welcome families at events, distribute programmes and seat audiences. The York Homeroom Partner Programme In the Middle School, all new incoming students are paired with a Homeroom Partner in the same grade, house, and homeroom, to ease the transition and integration into The York School community. The York Homeroom Partners are expected to contact the new student a minimum of one time over the course of the summer – to introduce themselves, answer questions and offer sound advice about student life. This relationship is nurtured throughout the year so that new students continue to feel welcome, connected, and supported. If your child’s York Student Homeroom Partner has not been in contact by late August, please email Natasha Estey at: nestey@yorkschool.com. / 33

Fees associated with Challenge Week are in addition to tuition and will be charged to the student’s account. Curriculum-driven day and overnight field trips take place at different points throughout the school-year. These field trips are mandatory. Associated fees are not included in tuition and will be charged to the student’s account. For more information on Challenge Week and field trips, please contact:

Students have to “try-out for a team. Skill along with the ability to commit to practices and games are considered for player selection. Given that player experience and skill levels vary, some teams will be in the league while others will play exhibition. The programme’s competitive nature, along with stringent qualifying criteria, may limit the number of players and may mean some players will be placed on a development team. Fees are associated with all team sports and are charged to student accounts. Recreational Programmes We also offer recreational programmes to provide students with a variety of positive sport experiences. Programmes such as yoga, fitness boot camp, and strength and conditioning are available. Registration is term by term. Fees for these programmes vary and will be posted with the registration information at the start of each term. Fees are charged to student accounts. Senior School Academic & University Counselling Course Selection Participation in the final two years of the Middle Years Programme and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Progamme requires that students include in their courses: a second language, mathematics, an experimental science, a social science, an arts course and English. This ensures that each student will meet Ontario requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and have the appropriate configuration of Grade 12 credits for university entrance. Grade 9 students have one elective option and Grade 10 students have three elective options. Please connect with David Hanna, Director of University Counselling, as soon as possible to discuss course selections. Naviance Family Connection Naviance Family Connection is an application used to guide and monitor a student’s Senior School academic plan. It is available to our Grade 6 to 12 students and is accessible through a button on YorkNet in the parent portal. During the school year, parents can sign in at any time to view the information. When a new student’s account is set up, an email will be sent to the student and the parent from our University Counselling department with a link and instructions for the initial setup.
