OUTDOOR GATHERING LOCATION | STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA DESIGN | TWO WEEKS [second year] BRIEF | Design an outdoor gathering space to be utilized

by the Arts College, School of Architecture, and the Spear’s School of Business. This includes an outdoor stage, divided spaces for various activities, and a large seating area in relationship to the stage.

This agora space, on the site of an existing parking lot turned into Oklahoma State’s sculpture garden, is meant for various colleges to utilize for outdoor lectures, selling products, displaying projects, and promote their college of study. The agora provides four large individual spaces for setting up booths and projects that are divided by the abstract trellis that provides cover over the stage area and seating stair. The trellis gives the opportunity for objects and potential lighting to be hung as well as greenery or screen shading. The large stage area can be rented out for concert venues, award ceremonies, and other various gathering parties. On fair weather days, outdoor education is becoming more popular as it provides learning in a relaxed environment, reduces stress, and allows the public to observe various classes, and promote awareness of the University.

STAZIONI LOCATION | TOLLO CANOSA SANNITA, ITALY DESIGN | FOUR WEEKS [third year] BRIEF | Using steel as the primary material, design a

railway station for the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the high speed train system in Italy. The purpose is to provide the local people with more access to the train system of Italy and expand travel. The station must be able to accommodate a max of 500 travelers per hour and provide an information center for new-comers. This project was entered in the AISC Steel Competition for 2013.

When designing the train station, a connection to the beach and providing space for local vendors and artisits was of the utmost importance. Research showed this to be true. Much of the beach in this area is owned by private clubs and hotels, so by providing a public train station with rights to the beach, it allows access to the public for both locals and visitors as well as local vendors and artists to display and sell their work along the beach walk.

Travelers can use the elevator or walk down the stairs to access the ticket and information desk. This lower zone also connects directly to the beach walk and the second set of stairs that connect to the boarding platform.

VERTICAL MUSEUM LOCATION | ROME, ITALY DESIGN | SEVEN WEEKS [third year] BRIEF | Unlike most museums that are horizontal, this

museum is 100m tall. The goal of this project was to research and discover the best way to move masses of people vertically through exhibits; a tough challenge as most museum move visitors horizontally. Being in Rome, Italy, this museum must also mesh well with the great history and architectural style of Rome. The museum must provide gallery spaces, a temporary gallery for traveling exhibits, archives, research areas, and residential spaces for employees.

Located in the heart of Rome, this vertical museum resides Northeast of the historical Roman Colosseum and close to ancient downtown. Much like the surrounding structures, this tower has been eroded away, revealing the structure underneath and blending in with the site as if it had been there since ancient Roman times.

OCEANARIUM LOCATION | SAN JAUN, PUERTO RICO DESIGN | SEVEN WEEKS [fourth year] BRIEF | San Jaun is in the process of creating a new

urban beach walk filled with restaurants, hotels, and other entertainment amenities. One site is still void in the middle of the island; Muelle 9. Design an oceanarium and urban landscape for public use on the pier while maintaining the urban beach walk from this site to the next. Create a connection to San Juan’s historical district and provide space for vendors and local artists.

27|28

San Juan, the capital and most populous city in Puerto Rico, is very diverse. Architecturally, ethnically, and culturally. The oldest part of the city, known as Old San Juan, is home to most of the Spanish influenced architecture in the community; comprised of setted roads and old two-story buildings. The streets are small and tight, and the local people use these small alleys to hold dancing, parties, dinners, and many night life activities that make San Juan what it is.

There seem to be two driving forces on the island; that of energy and drive, and that of relaxation and reflection. The energy and drive, are focused in the old part of the city to the Northwest. The relaxation and reflectance are focused near the open green spaces and parks to the Northeast. There is a lack of connection between the two, right in the middle of the island. We have to opportunity to create a link between the forces of the island.

NORTHWEST APPROACH

Located between Muelle 8 and Muelle 10, this site is the perfect spot for the “missing link. Bridging all the piers and connecting to the waterfront promenade, we have the opportunity to create a place for the perfect mix between the two forces of the city; all flowing into this site. The market will serve as the energetic and driven force for the locals and a fun place for tourists to see the San Juan culture, and the urban beach and passive plaza serves for the relaxation and reflectance for individuals. When deciding a form and shape of the urban space, I used the circulation of the pedestrians to help drive the direction. Coming from Old San Juan, the visitors hit the pier on an angle and wash into the market plaza like a wave; hitting the building mass and flowing into the more private and relaxing activity space. As the visitor goes farther into the site, they begin to feel more a sense of privacy and individuality.

The bulk of the masses lies on the west side of the site, providing shade and protecting the eyes from the worst views of the island, the masses help give direction, and divide the space into the zones of active and passive.

WAY FINDING FIRST FLOOR Upon arrival to the oceanarium, one enters through a vast chasm that contains a mangrove exhibit as well as an outdoor lobby space. Visitors can choose to walk next to the mangrove exhibit via plaza walkway, or walk up a slight ramp extending into the mangorve forest that connects to the outdoor lobby. When in the lobby, visitors can access the ticket and information desk of the oceanarium or enter the gift shop and auditorium for a show.

SECOND FLOOR

SECOND FLOOR

After entering the oceanarium and buying a ticket, the visitor enters a grand ramp. This ramp is used for all traffic in and out of exhibits as well as floors and is completely outdoors. As visitors reach the second floor, they are greeted with a powerful exhibit containing the native manatee. This animal is the primary exhibit of the oceanarium and is meant to bring awe and excitement about the mammal. From there, guests circle a large coral reef tank in the center of the floor flanked by smaller fish tanks along the walls. When visitors have reached the back of the coral reef tank, they enter a dark exhibit space and tunnel containing the ocean exhibit. This tank holds all the large species.

THIRD FLOOR

THIRD FLOOR

After making the complete circle around the coral reef tank, guests find themselves back at the grand ramp. From there, they work there way up to the third floor. On this floor, visitors can access the sky terrace via bridge, and enjoy the previous exhibits from above, looking down into the spaces as well as a different perspective of the ocean tank.

BREWING ACADEMY LOCATION | OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA DESIGN | THREE WEEKS [fourth year] BRIEF | Oklahoma City, located in central Oklahoma,

has several historical districts. Bricktown, the old industrial zone of the city, is one of the most popular historical districts. Bricktown has undergone a major transformation in recent years to become the most popular downtown area where many people visit to enjoy all the new amenities. From its name, one can tell that the area’s primary material is brick, and many businesses and restaurants have developed a modern twist to many of the old brick buildings to keep with the historical times. The task is to design a multi-use brewing academy that provides space for a small brewery, classrooms, offices, and residential spaces.

41|42

BRICKTOWN, OKLAHOMA CITY In all facets of architecture, there is a cycle; a flow. A beer brewery is certainly no exception. It is evident in the beer brewing process that there is a pattern to follow and the architecture should follow that same process; follow a cycle. The flow of goods and ingredients is controlled by the placement of the brew tanks and the surrounding architecture for all other spaces outside the brewing area should all derive from the same cycle.

From proportion, to levels, to circulation, to materials, this brewery follows that cycle. A very open, public street level that is almost completely encompased in glass, followed by a more corporate, private second level emphasized by the brick band that connects back to the local district’s materiality, and finally crowned by a secluded residential level complete with a feeling of identity and ownership. A certain level of privacy is provided while simultaneously giving great views of the Bricktown district. Each zone follows the cycle and the result, is a premier building in the local district of Bricktown, Oklahoma City.

Our site is located on the corner of Mickey Mantle Drive and Reno Avenue facing both the Bricktown Ballpark and Harkins Theatre. Just down Reno Avenue continuing West, is Chesapeake Arena and the Oklahoma City Amtrak. The canal of the district runs directly behind our proposed site for the Brewing Academy.

EUROPE 2014 LOCATION | SIX COUNTRIES DESIGN | NINE WEEKS [summer 2014] BRIEF | The School of Architecture at Oklahoma State

provided me the opportunity to study in various countries across Europe with four of the school’s professors, teaching students about many famous and historical structures first hand. Six weeks based in Rome provided an abundance of historical architecture and trips to Berlin and Florence showed many other significant buildings. The last three weeks of the trip was a time with a small group of students traveling across many countries, seeing architecture in cities that were of interst to us. design and print an object that can be used in every day functions.

REPLACE

Working on a team of four, the task was simple: design an object that could be used for everyday tasks. However, the team must use Rhino 3D and physically print the project using 3D printers. Our group decided upon a musical piece; a violin. But instead of just printing an entire violin, we wanted to be a bit more creative and mesh an existing vilolin with a future-like twist by extracting the top part of the violin’s drum and taking off the bridge. Then, replacing it with the new hexagonal 3D printed drum complete with a bridge mount and acoustic holes.
