2. Urban Redesigned Route in Urban Regeneration project

Concept and Narrative Natural Science is a subject of researching and studying about the Earth’s geological and natural systems. It is important to acknowledge and explore how these systems have shaped and changed human’s life on Earth over centuries. The Earth’s natural forces, either created by internal or external energy, have a significant impact on changing its physical elements, such as landform, materials, water, atmosphere etc… These elements, as a result, have influenced and become driving force for human’s settlements, activities and behaviours.

(82/100 as outstanding project)

Vision and Aims Responding to client’s brief of creating a resilient urban University Campus, the design aims at creating and encouraging study to engage with outdoor study environment surrounding the Campus. By using and modifying natural elements, the landscape will become a force that influences and drives students’ activities, hence, create different dynamic outdoor study spaces.

ABOUT ME

Studying at the University of Sheffield has given me a huge opportunity to enter a professional working and learning lifestyle, where I was taught and led by skillfully dedicated teachers and tutors. Also, learning in an internationally multidisciplinary environment has become a stepping stone for me to chase my real dream to become a real landscape architect in the future.

represents the idea of creatures created by geomorphological process on Earth and showing the geological character of Derby.

A contrast feeling in coniferous planting area; a place enclosed by the coniferous tall trees, dapple shaded lighting and tall ferns, complete feeling of intimacy. Apart from this, students might get a sense of prehistoric nature and learn knowledge of plant evolution

Enclosed study hubs

Rain garden is as a green transition between the planting area and the faculty, also collecting water runoff from the surface

Cafe located in southfacing, an ideal place for people enjoying sunshine in the summer

First floor: canteen and cafe area Second floor: lecture theaters Third floor: different departments of natural science faculty

Big lawn open space genuinely become a connected space between the residential area and the faculty. Meanwhile, in the summer season, people can host barbecues or social events here

Open multifunctional space

Planting design in detail area

Prehistoric multilayer woodland

The collection of coniferous planting is chosen to create the primeval atmosphere for science hubs. This setting is also an ideal biological laboratory, to help students understand the ancient creatures of ecosystems. The tall coniferous woodland allows lights to illuminate the ground and reflect their needle-leaved textures on paving. The ground is covered by medium-height ferns would enhance the green enclosure for people and protect their back when seating. 1:50 @A2

8

Mixture of prehistoric and modern planting

As well as the continents have shifted because of both natural forces and man’s forces, the planting also evolved from the simplest to more complex forms and structures. The mixture in rain garden would be a witness of transition from time to time. Ferns and medium-height wet-lover herbaceous grasses and flowers would be planted in rain gardens to emphasize the theme of a transitional valley. Evergreen ferns are used to keep the structural form of the mixture when other herbaceous vegetation might lose their structures and forms in the winter or late autumn.

Modern herbaceous planting (drought tolerant species)

Tall ornamental grasses dotted inside the matrix or drifts of herbaceous perennial flowers would demonstrate the resilient trendy planting in an ever-changing climatic world. Different borders of replicated species would be planted as scientist’s experiment of spices that can get well adapted to the drought environment. The enclosure of rounded-form tall grasses will create an open outdoor classroom for any programmed students. However, in terms of ecological purpose, these might become new homes of bees, butterflies and other invertebrates. The modern colourful and vibrant palettes of planting would bright up the campus and bring natural breath to the campus. Low density of vegetation is to allow maximise the lightness and openness of the space

02 Route map Urban Redesigned Route Redesign the route from old canal basin of Victoria Quays Sheffield (based on the serial visions theory of Gordon Cullen) “If, therefore, we design our towns from the point of view of the moving person (pedestrian or car born) it is easy to see how the whole city becomes a plastic experience, a journey through pressures and vacuums, a sequence of exposures and enclosures, of constraints and relief.” (Cullen, G, 1971). Basing on the concept of ‘Townscape’, the sketches articulate the idea of serial vision from ‘here’ and ‘there’, taking readers through the journey of sense and changes of landmark features, focal points, and partiularly providing experience of flowing in spaces.

03 Housing project, Sheffield The Green Co-operative Community in the Porter Valley Vision: To create a member-led housing community, encourage social contact and solve the housing demand in the near future (10-20 years afterwards) in the area. To diverse the housing users in the Porter valley, creating sustainable community system. “Sustainable refers to the ability of the neighborhood and wider urban systems to be sustained and to miniseries their environment impact... (Rudlin & Falk, 1999) To create a vigorous and dynamic landscape surrounding with centralised open green space, indicating different types of open space ranged from semi-private to private
