CAT’S CRADLE

His first novel, Player Piano, was published in 1951 and since then he has written many other novels. During WWII, he was captured and held prisoner in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge. He also was present at the bombing of Dresden, an experience which provided the setting for his most famous work to date, Slaughterhouse Five (1969). He has published a volume of autobiographies entitled Palm Sunday (1981) and a large collection of essays and speeches, Fates Worse Than Death (1991).

Cat’s Cradle is Vonnegut’s satirical commentary on modern man and his madness. An apocalyptic tale of this planet’s ultimate fate, it features a midget as the protagonist; a complete, original theology created by a calypso singer; and a vision of the future that is at once blackly fatalistic and hilariously funny. A book that left an indelible mark on an entire generation of readers, Cat’s Cradle is one of this century’s most important works... and Vonnegut at his very best, leaving us to question our own intentions. - The New York Times

KURT VONNEGUT

Kurt Vonnegut was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1922. He studied at the universities of Chicago and Tennessee and later began to write short stories for magazines.

Kurt Vonnegut is a master of contemporary American literature. His black humor, satirical voice, and incomparable imagination first captured America’s attention in The Sirens of Titan in 1959 and established him as “a true artist” with Cat’s Cradle in 1963. He is, as Graham Greene has declared, “one of the best living American writers”. -Time

CAT’S CRADLE

etermined to write a non-fiction book entitled The Day the World Ended about the day the nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, freelance journalist John travels to Ilium, New York. He meets the family of the deceased Dr. Felix Hoenikker, one of the fathers of the nuclear bomb. John learns that Frank Hoenikker, the doctor's fugitive son, lives on the Caribbean island of San Lorenzo. Among an odd assortment of characters in the tiny island dictatorship, John comes across a former Calypso singer turned religious prophet named Bokonon and becomes a convert. As John struggles to understand the balance of good and evil on the island, he learns that each of the three irresponsible Hoenikker offspring were entrusted with a vial of Ice-nine, Hoenikker’s final and most dangerous invention. Ice-nine is so deadly that a single drop will freeze all the water on Earth, making the planet completely uninhabitable and killing all living things forever...
