Thomas R. Guskey, Ph.D. ’72
Honorary Degree Candidate
Thomas R. Guskey, Ph.D. ’72 is Professor Emeritus in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. He has served as Department Chair, Head of the Educational Psychology Area Committee, and President of the Faculty Council. Over his career, Guskey has been a Visiting Professor at 10 universities in the United States and a Visiting Scholar at universities in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. He is a 1972 graduate of Thiel College.
Guskey began his career as a middle school teacher and later earned his doctorate in educational measurement and evaluation at the University of Chicago. He has authored or edited 30 books and more than 300 professional papers and articles, focusing on educational assessment and classroom effectiveness. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including being named a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and receiving the Distinguished Contributions to the Field Award from Learning Forward.
His current work involves developing the evaluation model for the Compassionate Coaches Program, a special program designed by the Army of Survivors, an organization advocating for and supporting athlete survivors of sexual abuse, and helping school leaders engage parents and families in meaningful grading reforms. His most recent books include “Grading with Integrity” (2024), “Engaging Parents and Families in Grading Reforms” (2024), and “Implementing Mastery Learning” (2023).
Kaitlyn Schmidt ’25 Student Speaker
Kaitlyn Schmidt ’25, of Monroeville, Pa., is a mathematics major pursuing a secondary education certification. A 2021 graduate of Plum Senior High School, she plans to teach at the middle or high school level after graduation.
Schmidt’s speech, “Decoding Success: The Formula for Academic Excellence,” reflects her passion for learning and achievement.
An active member of the Thiel College community, Schmidt is part of the Dietrich Honors Institute and serves as Vice President of both Kappa Delta Pi (education honor society) and Kappa Mu Epsilon (mathematics honor society). She is also a member of Sigma Tau Delta (English honor society) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
As a dedicated student-athlete, Schmidt is in her third year as captain of the Thiel cheerleading team. She has been a four-year team member, contributing to national championship success in 2023 and podium finishes in 2022 (second place) and 2024 (third place). She also works as a peer tutor for math courses, helping fellow students excel in their studies.
She is the daughter of Kimberly and Robert Schmidt, of Monroeville, Pa.
Reflecting on her time at Thiel, Schmidt shares:
“Thiel College has provided me with countless memories and opportunities for growth through my academic studies, fostering intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. Additionally, the athletic and close-knit campus community have helped me build lasting friendships and cultivate valuable life lessons that will serve me well beyond graduation.”

Founded in 1922, Alpha Chi is one of only four national scholarship societies admitting to membership superior junior and senior students, irrespective of their fields of study. The objectives of Alpha Chi are the promotion and recognition of scholarship.
On the 300 campuses with chapters, Alpha Chi membership is the highest academic honor that may be awarded.

DEAN’S LIST
To be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student must attain a minimum grade point average of 3.4 for the term, based upon grades earned in a minimum of 12 conventionally graded credit hours.

These are named awards, grants and scholarships for currently enrolled students. They are primarily supported by endowed funds established by the gift of a principal sum to the College. All of the named awards are based, at least in part, on academic achievements in the student’s major area of study.

The Dietrich Honors Institute (DHI) exists to provide a superior foundation upon which a high-quality liberal arts education may be built. It does this partly through a specific set of core courses that are designated and designed especially for DHI students. Participants in the program have been invited on the basis of high school or college achievement and must maintain a high level of performance at Thiel.
