WHY WE GIVE

Morris “Moe” ’87 & Angie (Phillips) Hill ’89

Place of residence: Mansfield, Oh.

Professional Experience: Moe is a 2003 graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command 2003, recipient of Northwestern University’s Franklin Kreml Leadership Award for ethics in law enforcement, and retired Staff Lieutenant Ohio State Highway Patrol with 29 years of service. He is a 2019 recipient of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Distinguished Retiree Award. He is an elder/associate pastor of

Grace Evangelical Free Church. Angie has been a full-time mom taking care of me and our seven children for 33 years

Involvement at Thiel: Angie was a member of the Thiel choir where she served as a music assistant for two years and a member of the madrigal singers. She was also a four-year member of the Organization of Black Collegiates. Moe was a four-year member of the Thiel football team, serving as a defensive captain for two seasons. He was also a four-year member of the Thiel track & field team, one time holding both the school and conference records in the 400m dash and school record in the 200m dash. Moe is also the recipient of the 1992 Thiel College Young Alumnus Award and was inducted into the Thiel college athletic hall of fame in 2002.

Reason for giving back: “Both Angie and I were college students when federal funding for schooling was cut substantially. We were both blessed to be recipients of grants and low-interest loans from Thiel that helped us stay in school and earn our degrees. Now, it’s our turn to help someone else.”

Reason for Giving Back: There are a multitude of reasons to give back to Thiel. We feel it important to give back to the school that helped mold us into the successful individuals that we each became. It is important to us that each and every Thiel student be able to afford to go to Thiel and have

the same excellent experiences and outcomes that we had as a class. We feel great pride in being Tomcats and we give back to help keep the facilities modern and up to date so that our students are prepared for the world that awaits them. We also give back because we had a very special relationship with a professor or two and we see the need to help keep the excellent faculty that Thiel College employs.

In celebration of its 50th reunion, the Class of 1974 wanted to give back in a meaningful way and decided to create a Scholarship for Education majors and set a goal of $120,000, or more. We recognized that Thiel College graduates young people who are well prepared to teach in our elementary and secondary schools, and our students are desired by many school districts. Understanding that teaching is a true calling, and one that often doesn’t pay as well as some other careers, we felt that we should set a high goal that would allow the College to offer a number of deserving students a

scholarship each year to help defer some of the cost of a college education. In other words, we set up a scholarship that will continue to support students for decades to come. A gift that keeps giving was important to our class members.

While many individuals from the Class of ’74 give back to Thiel College on a regular basis, we hope that this Class Gift will inspire others to consider what they might do to support the college that taught them to live their lives with grace, meaning and purpose. Gifts to the Thiel Fund support the overall operation of Thiel in a multitude of ways. Adding to scholarships or starting a scholarship provides students with much needed funds to help them enjoy their college experience without going too far into debt or having to leave for a lesser experience. Gifts to support the facilities and infrastructure ensure that Thiel stays “first in class” and provides the best for the faculty and the students in both academics and sports.

The donors who help Thiel grow and innovate are listed with gratitude in this, our annual Honor Roll of Donors. Our mission is to empower a community of learners to discover and create better futures, and become the leaders the world needs now. This is only made possible by each one of you who step up to help us on that path.

Justin and Melissa (Eagon) Oakes ’03

Residence: Sandy Lake, PA

Professional experience: Melissa was a healthcare auditor (Carbis Walker 2004-2008) and cost accounting supervisor (MVS 2008-2010). She is a Professor of Business Administration and Accounting at Thiel College

since 2010. Justin is a machinist for Viking Tool and Gage in Conneaut Lake, Pa.

What they are giving: We are donating for the renovation of the Spence Center and having a collaborative space in the Business Administration and Accounting area named. Also, Thiel College is named in both of our estate plans. When we pass, the College will receive the proceeds to set up scholarships for students.

Time at Thiel: Melissa was a student from 2000-2003 and is a professor.

Reason for giving back: I’ve been blessed in my life in many ways, and I want to pay it forward to others. Giving back doesn’t always have to be in a financial way but sharing your talents, expertise, or time can make a difference, too. It honestly makes me happy to give back and then ultimately see the impact it has on those around me. It just feels like the right thing to do. I love helping people, and this is just one small way I can do that.

What inspired you to make your first donation? Thiel has been a big part of my adult life. Between being a student and now a faculty member I have seen first-hand the impact donations have on the programming, the students, and the facilities. I believe in the campus community and think we have lots of great things to offer, and that takes money not only from tuition but from donations.

Can you share a specific story or experience at the College that influenced your decision to continue supporting it? I continue to support the College because as a professor I get to hear firsthand the students’ hopes and dreams along with their struggles. One of their biggest concerns is financial. When I was a student, I remember getting a letter in my mailbox stating that I had been awarded $500 for the next semester towards tuition from a scholarship fund. While it may not seem like a lot of money, that meant the world to me and helped me purchase my textbooks.

How do you hope your contributions will impact the students and the college community? I’m hopeful that my contributions will inspire others to contribute to such a wonderful place. I believe in supporting what you believe in, and I believe in our students and the campus community. I want to see them both thrive.

What message would you like to share with other potential donors about the importance of giving to Thiel? Giving back (even in talents) shows support to the community. It takes a village to run the college and without donors’ contributions, it wouldn’t be what it is today and can’t advance to what it needs to be in the future.
