BACHELOR THESIS // GROUP PROJECT

0.1 AALBORG THEATRE ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING DESIGN

I N T E G R AT E D D E S I G N

BACHELOR PROGRAMME

6

2018

The thesis presents an architectural proposition of a new theatre, situated at Spritten in the western part of Aalborg. The proposition encompasses tectonic and aesthetic aspects, which relate within the fields of engineering and architecture. Spritten is an abandoned former alcohol factory and is appointed as one of the most significant cultural heritage in Denmark. It is

in a transformation into a cultural hub, which will embrace culture, art, and gastronomy. The concept of Aalborg Theatre takes its starting point in the worth preserved Maltbuilding and appears as a guest in relation to the existing industrial architecture. On account on the significance of the Maltbuilding, the new architecture must consider and respect its architectural

elements and materiality. The essence of the concept is the diversity of architectural spatial perception and experience. The theatre narrates an architectural timeline, as the Maltbuilding represents the past and the adjacent architecture represents the present. The space between represents the transition from the industrial era to contemporary architecture.

The encounter of old and new elements creates an ambiguous narrative of the space. The tectonic force of the architectural concept consists of an abstraction of the characteristic theatre curtain, which captures and hides the cultural and artistic world of theatre from the public. It is a holistic solution, which addresses the structural and sensuous aspects of the concept.

The focal point of this proposition is the concept of Zero Energy Social Housing with focus on environmental and social sustainability, which are adaptable and responsive to future changes due to climate change and increase of population in the cities. Furthermore architectural and sensuos qualities are adressed to aim a holistic solution. The concept is situated in Aalborg, where the former shipyard at the harbour is transformed into a Container District, which revitalises the identity of the site and presents it in a sustainable and innovative architecture. Used shipping containers are converted to highly sustainable dwellings in order to avoid additional material waste. Moreover the containers refer to the industrial heritage of Aalborg and communicate with the urban context in terms of scale and material. Utilisation of passive and active means supply the dwellings with green energy, based on renewable sources, and emphasis the concept of a sustainable district. The urban spaces is of different characters to accommodate diverse activities and interactions. A raised courtyard hosts a semi-private sphere and unites the inhabitants. The waterfront accommodates the livings boats and is a public domain for recreational and leisure activities. The concept proposition creates a coherence across the harbour and the maritime environment, and add a social value to the site.

The Cabin represents an architectural design of a retreat for an author. The Cabin is situated off-grid at Hammer Bakker, Vodskov, and is a space for recreational thoughts, concentration and tranquility. The concept focuses on the interaction between architecture and nature and consists of the contradiction between volume and void. The volume encloses a private sphere and embraces the spatial experience. The void embraces the nature and connects the Cabin with the surrounding elements. The architectural design adresses the sensuous aspect as well, as it ensures visual, acoustic intimacy and it is responsive to the tactile sense. Hence, the concept offers pleasurable shapes and surfaces, created for the touch of all senses, but it does also integrate structural properties, which gives the experience of it a strengthened coherence and significance. The Cabin aims to be environmental sustainable and self-sufficient in terms of materials and energy consumption through sustainable low embodied CO2 material and passive and active means.

The architectural propostion presents an Atelier for an artist, situated in the southern part of Portugal. The concept is based on an abstraction of the dynamic topography and movement of the coast, and it takes shape of distinctive volumes, which create a central courtyard. Hence, the courtyard is focal point of the compostion, which unifies the various scale of spaces. The rigid composition creates a clear flow in the spaces and is in contrary to the dynamic landscape. The Atelier accommodates living and working space, which are clearly distinguished in order to create a boundry between a private sphere and a working environment. The concept focuses on the articulation of in-situ concrete as the main material in relations to architectural and structural perspective. Thus, there is a great coherence across the architectural spaces and structural system. Furthermore, the concrete creates a strong connection to the contex in terms of tactile, and compose a raw and straightforward expression.

The design proposition represents an Energy Optimised Building for the company SIEMENS, situated in central Aalborg, Denmark. The concept of Energy Optimised Design complies with the company’s initiatives of more environmental sustainable solution, and adds value to city. Thus, the design takes technical, functional and aesthetic aspects into consideration to constitute a quality and holistic oriented result. Thus, the concept is based on architectural and engineering parameters and consists of an interplay of volumes rotated according to surrounding factors. The volumes comprise a dynamic expression and present a modern architecture, which is contrary to the contextual architecture. The concept is based on a frame structure, which is the focal point for architectural space and the load-bearing system. Additionally, the proposition includes a conceptual design of the adjacent courtyard, which aims to offer recreational space for both the employees and the visitors of the building and site.

The aim of the studio is to enable an understanding of the relation between an architectural element and an urban space through an abstract and conceptual design. The concept grasps the principle of an urban space, which belong to the the public people and the city, and the space as a starting point for an architectural element. The focal point of the concept is a dynamic frame system, which enable an urban space and comprises the structural system for the architectural elements, which are placed and stacked on top. Connections and relations to the context are established by creating a passage through the appointed courtyard.

The Forest represents an urban design concept, situated at Toldbod Plads, Aalborg, Denmark. The aim of the design is to create a public domain for social interactions and spatial experience. The concept consists of two arches rising from the ground, which create passages. Thus, the ground level embraces the flow through the space, and the upper level embraces the experiences. The arches appear as a landscape and sculptures in the urban space and the curved expression is in greate contrast with the geometric pavement and creates an interesting clash. The concept is characterised by green elements, which create a pleasant green oasis in a modern and industrialised city.

Nordic Cube is a an architectural design of a temporary, freestanding pavilion, located in the urban space of Utzon Parken, Aalborg. The pavilion is mainly programmed for architectural exhibitions for the Architectural Deparment of Architecure and Design and the Utzon Center. The pavilion creates a space for dialogue, discussion, learnning and studies. It represents an academic extract for the society and, therefore, is also a space for the people of the city. The concept is based on a parametric principle, which implies a dynamic pattern and curvature in the design. Hence, the tectonic in this particular expressivity arises from the statical resistance of the construction.
