Competition for a self-sufficient and sustainable mobile village for a nomad community. the goal of the competition was to design a mobile village whose purpose was to travel along a defined itinerary, informing locals about the need to take action on preserving the natural habitat. the project aims to develop a mobile habitat unit for a larger and more flexible use. easy to built, easy to transport, optimized but flexible and economic so that it could serve as temporary and mobile residence in natural areas for tourism or research, and for shelter and support in areas stroke by disaster. this is the story of de reutilization of an object design to transport all kind of commodity into a mobile, temporary, flexible, self-sufficient and sustainable habitable unit. An example of how you can occupy natural areas in a non invasive way, for shelter, research, temporary residence. An example how you can transport a shelter into areas strike by natural disasters, political conflict, like refugee camps, based on four simple ideas: REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE, REHAB. REUSE old containers to transport and accommodate people in need; REUSE materials like steel and wood from containers, water tanks and plumbing pipes; REUSE solar passive energy; REDUCE energy consumption form fossil fuels, thru de use of photovoltaic panels, and aerogenerators; REDUCE energy consumption by using natural ventilation systems; REDUCE water consumption by capturing rainwater into non potable water tank and using it to feed irrigation, toilet, washing machine; REDUCE water consumption by using toilet, faucet and shower with low water consumption systems; RECYCLE materials like cotton fibber for isolation, wood, aluminum for windows, steel, glass; RECYCLE used water and organic waste collected into special tanks; REHAB containers that no longer serve their use; REHAB people conscience into a sustainable way of living.

CONTAINER
ORIGINS Developed by the american Malcom Mc Lean in 1937, as an attempt to find a solve the defective accommodation of cotton bales in NYC harbor. The solution found was big steel cases that could be themselves shipped. Nowadays the container is the prime accommodation structure used for transportation by sea, river, train, land. CHARACTERISTICS The basic container with doors on one side, is normally used for dry loads like food, clothes, furniture. The ventilated container is used for loads that generate heat and require protection against condensations. The doors are ventilated and there is an electric additional ventilation system. The ventilators have protections to prevent water coming inside. DIMENSIONS Container “Dry Box” 40´_12.192x24.438x2.896m (LxWxH) Container “Dry Box” 20´_6.058x2.438x2.59m (LxWxH) in wikipédia CONCLUSION Everyday thousands of containers stop fulfilling the function they were designed for. Why not use this tight and ventilated box made of corten steel and giver it a new use with a similar function - transport and accommodate people.

MU_flexible mobile unit, able to be transport by land, sea and river. The transportation means should be picked according to site location and financial resources. However the ideal situation would be able to travel without using fossil energy. The best solution would be the sail ship but that is also expensive and slow. The train presents a good compromise between ecology and economy, but is dependent on the existent network conditioning the stop places of the itinerant village. The truck is, no doubt more flexible and economic but less ecologic - it could be interesting to use biodiesel.

BUILDING FOR BOUWKUNDE
NAME an end as a start TITLE international ideas competition LOCATION TU Delft DATE 2008 ORGANIZER TU Delft CREDITS work developed for metroquadrado® TEAM Susana Soares Saraiva a. | Ségio Magalhães a. | Bernardo Portugal d. | Francisca Silva d. Introduction What’s the use of architecture? What does the faculty of architecture represents? How is it taught here? Witch tools are needed to establish that education? These are the questions that we asked ourselves while developing the concept idea for the new BOUWKUNDE and guided its design. The route leading from experimental architecture theory to a building practice dominated by conventions passes through a twilight zone of concepts and methods. Regardless of whether one opts for a technical, structural, artistic, or traditional approach, the transition from theory to practice demands an intervening step. This step consists of a series of design-related decisions that can be interpreted as the combination of a concept - otherwise defined as the direction that leads to a solution - and a method for converting this solution into concrete rules of play. N.J. Habraken On 13 May 2008 a great building was lost. Is memory will remain in the mind of all the people who experienced it throughout the years. They will cherish and share mental images and experiences of the building with others. It may figure in architecture books, magazines e wallpapers, but for the rest of us (who didn’t have the opportunity to see and explore this building) this will no longer be possible, it as disappeared. It is a sad thought, but on the other hand, it is interesting to realize how much architecture is able to touch us acting like a living organism. Unlike other activities, no matter how much theory is transmitted to a person about a specific building, city or construction method, it seems that we are not able to completely understand it until we have the opportunity to see it for ourselves. Le Corbusier said that architecture is about harmony and mathematic order that is able to touch us, and that is something that cannot be transmitted by speech but only by practical experience. That means that, when a building disappears, it is lost forever, like a person: his teachings remains but the intimate relations that it established with people is lost and can never be repeated. That is why it is so difficult to copy architecture. Like people each building shares common links between one another, it also has a specific conjugation of form, dimensions, proportions that make it unique and makes the experience of it unique for each person who visits it. On the other hand, it’s this same ability to communicate to each person differently that makes architecture so inspiring to others leading to new and innovative achievements. In this case, the end of the BOUWKUNDE (the one that lasted for almost 40 years) is the beginning for a new building, a new approach, a new set of experiences based on the same basic principles and tools that have ruled architecture and allow us to understand/teach/live this activity. ART CENTER GRAÇA MORAIS
NAME New Art Centre Graça Morais TITLE international Architecture competition LOCATION Vila Flor, Bragança, Portugal DATE 2009 ORGANIZER Vila Flor Municipality CLASSIFICATION 5th place CREDITS work developedz for metroquadrado® TEAM Susana Soares Saraiva a. | Márcia Oliveira a. | Bernardo Portugal d. | Francisca Silva d. Context The project for the Art Centre Graça Morais aims to be a “space for the reunion of arts” of Vila Flor municipality as well as for all the Northen region of Portugal, acting as a dynamic pole for the art and artistic culture of the region. The inspiration came from the painter herself: a search for a symbiotic relationship between tradition and contemporarity that is silent but present, timeless in its affirmation, intense, simple, straightforward and emotional. The new building tries to articulate itself with the existing medieval urban structure. The preexisting building (an old burgoise house from 19th century - parcel 01) has to be respected but also reinterpreted due to serious alterations during the 20th century. It is important to restore its importance in the definition of the main square it helps define (republic square). The adaptation of the existing building to a new function tries to establish a honest balance between the necessities of the new function with the intrinsic characteristics of the existing structure. The end result is a clear recognition of the old house, restore to its dignity with new interventions clearly controlled: an interesting mixed of materials, textures and techniques old and new interconnecting. The new intervention (parcel 02) is supposed to exist on a nearby empty plot delimited by beautiful old stone walls, located on the other side of the street Miguel Corte Real. It should be silent and sustainable not disturbing the existing urban fabric, but rather complementing it. Concept The intervention site presents to us some interesting challenges that were selected to orient the definition of the concept: - Definition of the South facade of the main building (parcel 01) - street Miguel Corte Real; - Development of a functional connection between parcel 01 and parcel 02 (separated by street Miguel Corte Real); - Development of a concept that respects the intricate existing urban structure as well as existing buildings | structures. The existing building (parcel 01) presents numerous alterations in its south facade that are de-characterizing it: a confusion set of additions with different hight, materials, openings that make the original facade unrecognizable. Beyond the impossibility of reconstruct the original facade we propose the demolition of the garage and wooden structure that define the south part of the plot and the facade of the side street Miguel Corte Real. The new released area will be used for access (horizontal and vertical communication) to connect the difference areas of the new museum without compromising the existing interior layout. The necessity of defining the South facade as well as establishing a connection between parcel 01 and 02 led to the development of a concept inspired by the traditional wooden structures of Portuguese vernacular architecture reinterpreted in the light of modern technology: a self-supporting structure in wood defines the entire new intervention covering the south facade (and establishing the access spaces) of the existing building and other demolished areas of the parcel 01; crossing the street Miguel Corte Real suspended and defining the new construction in parcel 02, respecting the existing stone walls that limit it. The interior space has a diffuse light that changes constantly thru the day and seasons: the rhythm of the wooden structure is most of the times shown by an interior glass coating (sometimes the wall, others the ceiling, other both). The light never strikes you directly due to the thickness and spacing of the wooden structure. The suspended passage is mostly due to the weather of Bragança: dry and hot during the summer and cold and wet (many times snows) in winter. The passage ensures not only a visible but not to imposing connection between the 2 parcels defining one buildings but also allows a comfortable connection between all parts of the program. However it is part of the concept the existence of multiple routes and independent accesses to the building. The existing building (parcel 01) hosts the permanent exhibition of the painter Graça Morais, entrance hall|reception|tickets, administration and support services. The cafeteria and store are accessible both from inside and outside (street Miguel Corte Real). The cafeteria is placed in the previous animal house and the store in the old kitchen connected thru the old kitchen patio. Parcel 02 hosts the temporary exhibitions, multipurpose room, art classes and general storage. Each one of these spaces have direct entrances from the outside but also accessible from the main building. The entire project was developed with a sustainable consciousness that comes from the materials chosen, alternative energy supply and water collection and reuse.
