JASON BOLES, CEO of Fans Created The Strategic Volunteer: Research supports that volunteerism has been on the decline for roughly 30 years. So, what is your motivation to volunteer? Are you serving or being served? As credit unions continue to evolve and become more complex, the role of the director is critical to ensure the organization is ready for current and future challenges. If you are not getting what you need out of volunteering, what makes you think you are giving back? We will discuss the role of the director and what you need to do to ensure you are getting the rewards you need in volunteering. NATHAN BOWDEN, General Counsel/ Director Regulatory Affairs and Compliance of VACUL BSA Update for Volunteers: Board of Directors must have adequate BSA training in order to understand the requirements, the risk, and the ramifications of noncompliance. This session is intended to give volunteers an overview of the general requirements and the most updated information regarding the hot topics. This is an excellent opportunity for those volunteers who have not had previous training, and for those who have, to be updated on the changes and new expectations. DAVE COLBY, Chief Economist of CUNA Mutual Group Risks - Challenges - Opportunities - 2012 – 2014 Economic and Credit Union Outlook: The recession ended almost three years ago and the U.S. economy is finally generating some positive results, yet the risk of a “double-dip” recession remains high. We continue to struggle towards recovery and our challenges go beyond the economy. Please join Dave as he shares his forecasts of the economic environment and what this means for the credit unions. There are great opportunities in these uncertain times and Dave will also share proven strategies from successful credit unions throughout the country. TIM HARRINGTON, President of Team Resources Captain or Commander: Who’s Sailing the Ship? Who is guiding your credit union ship? Your CEO? Your Board? This is an important question we all must clarify for the credit union to be efficient, effective and the best at serving your members. While the Board’s role is to set the course of the credit union, it is the CEO’s role to steer the ship. This session discusses why the distinction between these two roles can lead to a successful voyage and establishing useful measures to monitor the progress. 7 ½ New Things on the Board’s Radar: The economic environment is changing rapidly. Is your Board keeping pace? Successful Board leadership depends on a board that knows what direction the credit union should be going. For this session, Tim covers 7 ½ issues that boards should be aware of and consider. You can’t fool the market. If you’re not doing the right things, and doing them right, you may not last much longer. DAVID REED, JD, Attorney of Reed and Jolly, PLLC Uncovering the Board’s Role in the Examination Process: The Board is the ultimate authority within the credit union and with continued pressure on the share insurance fund; every credit union should get ready for more regulatory scrutiny than ever. But with smart preparation, more scrutiny doesn’t have to mean more time spent on compliance. David cuts through the “regulatory speak” and shows how preparation can put examiners at ease and benefit the credit union. Horror Stories From the Board Room: Ever heard of the board member who only attended one meeting a year or the Chair who hired his construction company to build a branch without taking other bids? They sound strange, but they’re true. David uses his experience as both inside counsel and outside counsel for credit unions to discuss the current state of governance and how to avoid some of the most common landmines. He covers: Basic Governance Issues, The Difference Between Oversight and Management, Recognizing and Reacting to Conflicts of Interest, and Board Participation. BRYAN TOWNSEND, Keynote Speaker Making Good Things Happen: A challenge to action! Good things do not happen by accident, they happen on purpose. It’s not enough to want to see good things happen, you have to want to make good things happen! Hitching Up a Winning Team: There is a difference between winning teams and the other teams. Bryan lays out a three point game plan for building and maintaining a winning team.
