summer is in the air! [ and we’ve kicked off our shoes, ditched the dining room and taken it outside! ] I’m a lake girl. Yes, even though I live in an area of the country dotted with beautiful ocean beaches, my heart belongs lakeside. There is something about being on the lake that makes me smile. Call it my happy place—my little slice of heaven. We are blessed with a family cottage on the shores of Lake Muskoka and despite the long car ride, my children are always beyond excited to head to the cottage. Boat rides, swimming, lazy days, family and lunches on the dock. I have a feeling it is their little slice of heaven too.

would be complete without ice cream, slushies and other cool treats? We’ll revive some of our blog’s greatest hits that will have you screaming for the cold stuff!

This issue of garnish is all about taking it outside. Summer’s warm weather and long nights are ideal for ditching the dining room and moving the party outdoors. Somehow the food gets tastier, and the conversation more vibrant. That relaxed vibe—that all of us who live where summer is fleeting strive to capture all year ‘round— just comes naturally at this time of year!

Behind the lens, making everything brilliant as she always does for Garnish, is Catherine Choquette. She also styled our casual table! I am so lucky to have someone who can make my vision a reality in such a fabulous way. And once again, this issue wouldn’t be possible without the very talented Michelle Cormack of A Girl Named Fred. Her creativity exceeds my expectations every time.

Whether you are dining dockside, or find yourself in the backyard with your toes in the kiddie pool (can we join you?), Garnish is here to help add a little sparkle to the setting. But always summertime easy breezy. Nothing too planned; nothing too formal. Pinkie swear!

I hope you all have as much fun wading through the pages of this issue of Garnish as we did putting it together. I wish you all a summer season filled with laughter, good friends and fantastic moments.

I had so much fun spending the morning lakeside to shoot this issue. I can’t thank my good friend Alexander Diaz (that’s me and Alex up above) enough for sharing his lovely home, Villa Del Lago, with us. Not a bad office space for the day! He also styled our formal table. He’s multi-talented that way!

And if you can enjoy it lakeside, all the better! We’ll show you fun ways to style cutlery packs. We’ve got summer essentials to keep everyone comfy and happy. You’ll see a table two ways: good ol’ backyard barbeque or summertime chic. We’ll share our favorite mocktail ideas (they make pretty good cocktails, too). And what summer

plan ahead... enjoy the spread Summer is way too short to sweat over an al fresco meal. So we like to keep it simple. First, we choose dishes that can be served cold or at room temperature. That way we limit our time in the kitchen. Salads in all their forms (chopped, pasta, potato, mixed greens) always make it to our summer table. We also like to add something crunchy: crisp pickles and everyone’s favorite potato chips fit the bill. All that’s left are the burgers, and you know the men can’t wait to fire up the grill! Finally, don’t forget the summertime sweets. A berry crisp bakes up nicely in advance and tastes just as good (trust us, we tested it for you!) served at room temperature.

1. Chopped veggies are a bright addition to any buffet. Set out our 8 oz. ripple bowls and your guests have a perfectly portable salad! 2. As if our sweet treats weren’t tempting enough, who could resist these mini baking cups? 3. The only part of this plate that needs cooking is the burger. Everything else is *gasp* store-bought. Pasta salad is served up in our 4 oz. nut and party cups, and that pickle is held in place with our 4" knotted picks. Nestle the chips and burger in our kraft paperboard food tray lined with our caramel waxed tissue. And bring out the good plates. They add the perfect stylish touch to your backyard bash.

show cutlery three ways me how [ not your basic forks, knives & spoons! ]

You know how when you’re in line at the buffet table, and you start to panic because you don’t know how you are going to hold everything in your hands all at once? Well, we have a solution... cutlery packs! They have everything you need, all in one place.

salt ‘n’ pepa

put a stamp on it

wrap it up

We used our small kraft bags as our “pocket”. First we cut the tops off with some fancy scissors so that you could see the cutlery sticking out. Next, we filled two of our small glassine bags with salt and pepper and used a Sharpie to label them. Then we simply stacked them on top of each other and stapled them to the kraft “pocket.” Finally, we stuffed our napkin and bamboo cutlery inside. So simple; so fun!

This one’s so simple that we’re almost embarrassed to make it a “show me how.” But seeing is believing, right? We found this cutlery stamp while shopping the aisles of our local craft store. One red inkpad later, and we had a pile of customized bags (this is a fun activity for the kiddos, too!). We punched two small holes in the top of our bag, popped in our cutlery, napkin and salt and pepper packs, and tied everything up with twine.

If brown baggin’s not your thing, why not wrap your packs? Grab a sheet of kraft paper and cut a set of 2" wide strips, each about 10" long. We used our caramel wax paper, folded double, and that worked, too! We took our napkin, bundled it up with our bamboo cutlery, and wrapped the pack right smack dab in the middle with our paper. We secured everything with a touch of twine, and, of course, topped it off with a bow.

Here’s a tip…place your cutlery at the end of the buffet line. That way your guests don’t have to juggle it while loading up their plates with food.

Here’s a printable... No stamps? No problem! Our bags run through a home printer lickety split. We’ve created a printable you can download here.

Here’s a variation... If you want to mix it up, you could try this with colored paper. What a fun and easy way to add a splash of color to your table!

the drinks are on the house! We had a blast mixing up the beverage bar for our all-ages bash. First, we prepped two refreshing flavored waters... honestly, easy as pie. Take one of our mini milk jugs, and pop in about a cup of chopped veggies or fruit. We used cucumber in one, and a mix of raspberries and blueberries in the other. If we had any mint, we would have added that, too. Top up with water, and store in the fridge overnight. Voilà. Next, we stocked our beverage boxes with lemonade and iced tea. You can easily make your own, but store-bought will work just as well. Guests can help themselves to either / or, or mix up a classic Arnold Palmer: 50% lemonade, 50% iced tea, 100% summer. If you like your drinks a little, shall we say, more adult... a wee shot of vodka or rum takes this from mocktail to cocktail in no time flat. Here’s a tip…stash a bucket of ice under your beverage bar, where the shade will slow the melting. You can keep your extra drinks cool and save yourself trips back to the kitchen for beverage box refills.

clockwise, from top right 1. Our 32 oz. plastic mini milk jugs show off the bright colors of the fruit and veggies. We used simple tags and twine to label our drinks. Our 96 oz. beverage boxes hold a lot of liquid refreshment. We brought our our mini chalkboards for labeling. Fun! Oh, and that pennant? Just cut out triangles of construction paper, string on our twine, and hang. Easy peasy! 2. Every drink tastessummery when it’s sipped through one of our adorable paper straws. We wrapped our glasses in cardboard sleeves to beat the summer sweat!

how’d they do that?

one table two ways

We had so much fun styling these two summer tables! Candles, glassware, plates (yes, the good stuff!) all make an appearance out of doors. Really, how much more likely are they to get damaged outside than in? We mixed them up with pebbles from the beach, “grass” from indoors and, of course, plenty of Garnish. The result takes you from casual backyard barbeque

to summer chic in no time flat. Nothing too perfect, nothing too strenuous. Just like summer!

summer sundries

why don’t you? We’ve come a long way from the crazy days of slathering ourselves in baby oil and baking in the blazing heat of mid-afternoon. Now, we like to practice safe sun. It’s the “bright” thing to do! (Sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves.) We stocked our dock (but you could stock your deck, or garage, or front porch, or... you get the idea!) with summer essentials so that all our guests could enjoy the laziest of summer afternoons. Fluffy beach towels. Sunscreen in a variety of SPF levels and application methods (sprays, creams, mists). Insect repellents. And a few first aid essentials: anti-baceterial cream and Band-Aids. We even popped a few flashlights into the basket for those after-dark trips to the dock for s’mores and sparklers! Finally, we filled two rectangle wooden berry baskets with packets of hand wash tissues, and gave them a bit of bright decoration. It’s an easy way to clean those grubby hands before dinner!

these Garnish greatest hits will have you (and everyone you know) screaming for icy treats!

Oldies but Goodies [ we still got it! ] icre cream exchange When the weather is warm, we often look to our freezers to provide relief. Sure, you might crack open the door to let a little blast of cool air waft over your face. But there’s nothing better than a scoop of ice cream with your favorite sweet toppings to beat the heat. Share the love with a little ice cream exchange with your besties. After dessert, invite them to grab their two pints (or more) as they head on out the door! Get the Garnish here.

Our small plastic cups are the perfect size for some cool refreshments. And how fun do our straws look cut down to size? You can even add your favorite liqueur for the over-21 crowd, or some fresh fruit for the kids. Whatever you decide to mix up, we’re sure everyone will be cooling off in no time! a boatful of ice cream If we’re being completely honest, we’ll take ice cream pretty much any way we can get it. (You’ve probably figured that out by now.) In a cone. In a cup. Heck, right out of the carton. But something about these adorable wooden boats and customstamped cutlery makes the ice cream taste extra sweet. So go ahead, push the boat out the next time you scoop your favorite flavor (ours is Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked). Get the Garnish here.

pop goes the pudding Seriously, prepping this frozen treat could not be easier. First, we dribbled a bit of chocolate sauce into one of our mini push pops. Nothing fancy, just whatever you use for ice cream, and squeeze it in. Second, we used some store bought pudding to fill them up. Finally, we popped them in the freezer for about an hour. Kids and adults alike love ‘em. Trust us. We’ve tested them extensively. Get the Garnish here.

the summer scoop We can’t image why anyone would want to exercise portion control when it comes to ice cream, but if you’d like to serve a smaller scoop, then nothing is easier than this. And we mean nothing! One of our small ripple cups + a wooden spoon and you’ve got a bite-size treat that’s beyond adorable. Or how about this? An ice cream tasting plate? Who says you have to stick to just one flavor? After all, they say variety is the spice of life! Get the Garnish here.
