2013/2014 DINNER series

Welcome to our engaging the digital learner series! This year we’ve secured a top-notch slate of educators dedicated to making the most of digital technology in the classroom and beyond. Whether you’re a seasoned new media veteran or a newcomer looking for how to get started, there’s something for you at our illuminating talks.

The Digital Learner with Antonio Vendramin Monday, October 7, 2013 - 3:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.

Why Connect? Why Innovate? If we continue what we’ve always done, we’ll continue to get the same results. Is that good enough? It’s becoming more and more clear that the quality of student learning is directly connected with the quality of teacher learning. Find out how the power of professional learning and connectedness has led to a movement of innovation and experimentation, all in a quest to improve student learning through engagement. My name is Antonio Vendramin, and I am currently the School Principal at Georges Vanier Elementary in Surrey, B.C. I love working with kids of all ages and I am passionate about building the capacity of the students, staff, and parents I work with. I believe in the power of connectedness and collaboration. I believe in the uniqueness of every learner, and the need to innovate in order to meet the ever-changing needs of those learners. The son of hard-working and determined Italian immigrants, I am a native of beautiful Langley, B.C., attending West Langley Elementary, Fort Langley Junior Secondary, and Mountain Secondary. When I am not at school, I can be found spending time with my wife, 3 children, and dog. I enjoy running, hiking, photography, and camping.

Engaging 21st Century Learner with Inquiry with Neil Stephenson Monday, November 4, 2013 - 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

What is Inquiry and how does it differ from traditional project work? Why is it important? How is it done? How can technology support and enrich Inquiry beyond merely searching for information? This session will present the building blocks of inquiry by sharing a number of powerful classroom examples, as well as providing resources and tools for teachers using inquiry in their classroom. Neil Stephenson recently moved to the beautiful west coast as District Principal of Innovation and Inquiry for Delta School District. Before that he spent many cold winters in Calgary, the last 9 of which were at the Calgary Science School where he taught, coached, and generally lived and breathed inquiry-based teaching and learning. During his time as a classroom teacher Neil received both the Governor General and the Prime Minister’s Awards.

Developing Responsible F2F & Virtual Citizens with Sandra Averill Monday, February 3, 2014 - 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Digital Citizenship competency states students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behaviour. These issues cannot solely be framed for the virtual world (as only the older people separate these worlds!) Finding starting points is the key! Sandra Averill has been teaching in the Langley school district for 20 years. During the last 6 years she has been sharing digital issues and strategies to students, staff, parents & the RCMP. Her training in this area comes from her work with students, research, conferences and raising her own two children.
