newness. Perhaps this ‘New Year’ attitude will continue for more than a month as the magazine sets to grow in its second year. Even though it is not quite there yet the journey has been a rich experience and hasn’t hindered my wanting to continue grow the magazine to where I’d like it to be. I was thrilled to learn the Ritz-Carlton is planning to build an exotic destination spot called Tamuda Bay in Morocco that defines luxury coupled with responsibility. The resort is not yet completed but we managed to bring you a quick look inside what Tamuda Bay will have to offer. It’s always exciting to find designers like Sonja den elzen the designer behind the label Thieves, who chose to work with sustainable fabrics and processes and what compels her to keep going. the
Nature of
Thieves
In 2006 a visionary named Sonja den Elzen created a line of clothing for men and women that embodied what the world ought to be: beautiful, harmonious and ecologically responsible. She called it Thieves, a poetic name that invokes the image of those who move about at night. While others close their eyes, Thieves remain awake, unwilling to ignore the importance of the natural environment. Wishing freedom from traditional boundaries and preconceived ideas, Thieves concocts wearable art from dreamlike creativity and environmental consciousness. Since its conception, Thieves has been an active participant in the fashion community, especially
when the environment is given particular consideration. The line has participated in Fashion Takes Action and in Toronto and Montreal’s Fashion Week. It was invited to show at the f irst Green Fashion Week held in Seattle and has been featured in Elle Canada and Flare. In addition to participating in several other events including benef its, in 2010 Thieves was named one of the Forbes.com top ten eco designers. It has been featured in multiple countries and continents for their fresh, contemporary design and passion for a protected earth. Currently it has a strong online presence at www.theives.ca, and its f lagship store is located in Toronto where designs can be experienced f irsthand.

The human form is a key inspiration in Thieves’ design. Asymmetrical lines and neutral colors compliment the body, softening harsh and false ideals to create a f inal result that blends with true human beauty. The look is genuine and is appropriately made with a variety of natural and sustainable materials including hemp blends, peace silks, organic wools, organic cottons, lyocell, vegetable tanned leather, recycled materials, organic linen, bamboo, and soy. As might be expected from a designer who is committed to fashion with a clear conscience, each piece in the Thieves line is not only conceived but manufactured in Toronto. Inspired by the natural beauty of her country, den Elzen is keenly aware of the importance Canada has in protecting the environment, particularly the vast water resources it has the honor of stewarding. With this in mind, her 2011 spring line represents the movement and beauty of water, reminding both the wearer and the viewer that its
purity and majesty must not be taken for granted. Each garment has a unique voice and is a reminder that everything we do is important as it pertains to the world around us. From the f lowing softness of the Sinann dress or the Five In One dress to the effortless structure of the Leaf jacket or Alfar buttoned shirt, each piece in the collection expresses the gentleness and strength that mankind experiences when it is true to itself and in harmony with nature. In just f ive short years, Thieves has established its identity and importance in the world of modern fashion. Setting an example to designers everywhere, Thieves has demonstrated that striking beauty and fresh creativity is not hindered by the use of sustainable fabrics or by maintaining strong consideration for the environment. Consumers and patrons will f ind this artistic and well-crafted spring line to be a breath of fresh air and a welcome change from what was once the status quo.

Scent always played a big role in my life, but it wasn’t until 10 years ago that I f inally decided to pursue it professionally. I was always able to tell that food has gone bad before anyone else did, and was able to recognize which shampoo my boyfriend have used. But most importantly - growing up surrounded by the Mediterranean vegetation taught me how to appreciate the beauty of natural aromatics (which later on I learned were in fact staples in the perfumer’s palette).
Your skin chemistry: never pick a scent based on how it smells from the bottle, on another person or on a scent strip. Try it on your skin for at least one day, before you decide to commit to a full bottle. This is why perfume shops always have testers, and this is why online perfume boutiques often offer sampling programs.
Wh a t a r e t h e i m p o r ta nt t h i n g s to k n ow a bo u t c h oos i n g a f ra g ra n ce? Fragrance is a very personal experience, and there are a few factors to remember: Our olfactory bulb (the smelling organ) usually gets saturated after smelling 3- 5 different scents. So make sure you make a decision when your nose is not “tired”. Take breaks between smelling different perfumes, and “re-set” your nose by smelling deeply a wool sweater or
Scent is very personal, so make sure you are enjoying the scent f irst and foremost. Wear what you love and makes you feel good about yourselves, not what’s trendy or what you think you are expected to smell like. Most people use way too much perfume. We get “desensitized” to it fast, because this is how the olfactory bulb is programmed. And than we think that we need to apply more. With perfume – less is more. And if everyone were to go by this rule, perhaps perfume wouldn’t have had the bad reputation it currently has. For that reason, it is better to rotate between a few scents, rather than

wear the same scent over and over again. This way – nose won’t get bored and used to the perfume so easily, and you will be less likely to over apply the scents. Plus it’s more fun!
Ar e yo u u s i n g o r g a n i ca l l y so u r ce d i n g r e d i e nts? Yes, but not exclusively. Similarly to other aromatic harvests (tea leaves, for example) - most of the ingredients for perfumery have to be grown without pesticides, but are not necessarily certified organic. But using only organic materials will limit my palette to very few essences, because I will not be able to use absolute extractions (these use solvents such as hexane in the process, and therefore cannot be certified organic even when the plant was grown organically).
Ar e a ny i n g r e d i e nts b e co m i n g ex ti n c t? Unfortunately, yes. Especially the wood oils, such as sandalwood and agarwood. Such woods have a highly desirable scent and were over harvested – and it takes such a long time to grow them (about 30-50 years) before being able to distil any
more oil from them.
Te l l u s a l it t l e a bo u t c r e a ti n g a s i g n a t u r e f ra g ra n ce? We begin with a 90 minute olfactory journey at the studio, or an interview on the phone or via email for customers from out of town. The olfactory journey entails smelling many different essences from my collection of about 400 essences, and picking the ones that really “rock your world”. Only the absolute loves will be incorporated in a signature perfume, which I will later develop in my studio. The process of fine-tuning and refining the signature perfume takes anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months. In the end, you will receive a perfume that is yours alone, accompanied by an inspirational poem or a little story as well as the notes used to make it. We keep the formula for future refills, of course.

Espionage and Ayalitta are my personal “staples” ever since I created them, and the rest are more seasonal – for example: Immortelle l’Amour is what I have been wearing in the winter since it was launched in 2007. Zohar and Hanami are springtime favourites, and than every year it’s whatever I’m working on that I’m obsessed with wearing and smelling. At the moment, it is Orcas,
a woody marine scent which will be released in spring 2011, and is light and refreshing with notes of spruce, rosemary and seaweed.

Moroccan Gold: The Ritz-Carlton Tamuda Bay
As the gears of the Western working modal oil ref lexes and look forward to the rigors of a new year, thoughts of a paradisiacal North African escape melt in the mind like a distant golden mirage. For a lucky few that illusion has been a reality. However, through the progressive development of more accessible luxury resorts, the lucky few is gradually becoming a lucky many. While political disruptions send
tremors of tourist discontent from their North African neighbours, a country that was immortalized through the art of greats such as Matisse and now plays host to several internationally recognized arts festivals (Marrakech International Film Festival and the World Music Festival for example) is coming to the fore as a mecca for reviving and luxury escapes.

According to Kevin Scholl; “Tourism in Morocco has doubled in the last ten years. Scholl should know, he is currently presiding over the WATG design for the R itz-Carlton Tamuda Bay in Morocco. The celebratory designed golf course, Mediterranean Sea views, villas and marina apartments that this resort promises sound enticing but, what of the indigenous landscape and natural resources. WATG have a reputation for taking this latter cause into great consideration thankfully, hotel and resort designs for over 160 countries and across six continents say it all. At Tamuda Bay the R ItzCarlton project sits sideby-side with a wetland that homes migratory birds, WATG’s response to this situation is to preserve the wetland and include an eco-park that gives enough distance to protect the wildlife while at the same time

introducing visitors to the local nature. Such an ingenuitive solution to a sustainability issue merits as much recognition as the meticulous selection of materials and colours in the project design, which weaves rich indigenous references with light contemporary chic. Not only is the R itz-Carlton Tamuda Bay resort idyllically placed to meditate the mind through the lush green landscape and fresh Mediterranean breeze, the hustle and bustle of Tangiers lies just 45 minutes drive away via a new highway. The good news for those in search of luxurious pampering and mirage-esque tranquility is that this dream destination is planned for completion next year, 2012 . For a sustainably conscious resort with golden aspirations, the R itz-Carlton project serves both in substance and style.
