IDA – HELPING YOU MEET YOUR CPD REQUIREMENTS CPD
CPD PROGRAMME SEPT 2019/DEC 2019
INTRODUCTION CPD
As a dentist, you are ethically obliged to keep your knowledge and skills current. The Dental Council recommends that dentists complete and keep records of at least 50 hours of continuous professional development (CPD) per year. Twenty of these hours should be verifiable CPD, i.e., approved by the Dental Council. You should complete 250 hours of CPD over five years, of which a minimum of 100 hours should be verifiable. Remember CPD is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions, so if you are thinking of practising dentistry in another country you may be obliged to show records of the CPD you have completed here in Ireland.
The Dental Council recommends that all dentists, regardless of their area of work, carry out CPD (*over a five year period) in the following areas: n Infection prevention and control 10 hours* n Radiology informatics and radiation protection 5 hours* n Professional communication: 10 hours* Relationship management Ethical and legal issues Conflict resolution Handling of complaints Communication
RECORDING YOUR CPD It is the responsibility of every dentist to keep a record of their CPD. Both verifiable and nonverifiable CPD should be recorded. The IDA’s online CPD programme (the system used to book IDA courses online) will also keep a record of any IDA courses you have completed, including branch meetings, once we receive an attendance sheet from the branch and we can verify attendance.

Oral radiation – am I compliant?
FIRST EVER!
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 9, 2019 1.15PM – 1.45PM. Questions on the topic are invited beforehand to put to presenter. Please email elaine@irishdentalassoc.ie with any questions on the topic. There have been significant changes to the way in which dental radiation equipment, and the safety of dentists, dental practice staff and patients in relation to dental x-rays, are regulated and inspected. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA; formerly RPII) will remain a competent authority responsible for authorising dental x-ray equipment, covering protection of employees and
the general public. Dentists will no longer be required to have an x-ray licence, but premises must have an “authorisation” to operate dental x-ray equipment. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) will replace the Department of Health and the HSE as the competent authority for medical ionising radiation, covering all matters in relation to the dental patient. Thus, under the new legislation dental practices may find themselves inspected by both the EPA and HIQA. The presence of two regulatory agencies in the Irish jurisdiction has the potential to lead to a greater administrative burden for dental practices. This workshop will help dentists to establish structures of good governance in their practice, and prepare for inspections from the competent authorities by having all documentation and appropriate work practices in place.
Dr Jane Renehan MDentSc MBA(Hons), compliance consultant Following qualification from Trinity College in 1980, Jane worked exclusively in the public dental sector. In 2017, she left the HSE and established Dental Compliance Ltd, which provides dental practices with a customised support service in complying with clinical regulations. Her company’s strategy is to simplify compliance for dental practices by taking the hassle out of regulation. Irish Dental Association | www.dentist.ie – Book CPD
